This is a very unique guest house harder to find. I almost left to find another place after seeing a few single rooms that were pretty small and warm. By night, the one I got was fine with cool air in the window. No a/c or screens on the windows but the high ceiling had a strong fan and the bed had a good mosquito net. The mattress and towel were pretty bad. Good breakfast. The rooftop patio is the best part and worth the stay.

It is an old beautiful house with interesting decoration and awesome terrace, David is also nice however the room at the basement was disgusting with a smell of mould and bathroom. After a horrible sleepless night l left early in the morning. My hostel before this one was the same price and was so clean, but l was the only guest, so this time l chose here because this is a travelers’ meeting point. Don’t know why and how people stay at this filthy place for a long time, maybe there are better rooms.

We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights. We booked via booking.com and had no problems when we were checking in.The hotel is decorated very special and we personally loved it! Unfortunately the place was a bit dirty and could use some maintenance. The air in the room was not good and the fan worked but it was still very hot in the night. We ordered vegan breakfast, that was basically some fruits, one chapati and Two small toasts. Totally ok but nothing special. It definitely has a special atmosphere but if you look for a clean, hygienic place you wont be satisfied here.

Do not stay here! We made a reservation with booking.com and when we arrived we were told we would have to pay $45 extra to stay in addition to the booking.com price and they didn’t even have the room we booked available. They seem to work with several different hotels in town, none of whom update their availability on their site. It seems that when you arrive if your room isn’t available they then try to ship you off to less expensive hotels in the area. We met three groups who were all staying at malindi, none of whom has reserved there but who had been ‘transferred’ their because their chosen hotel was actually full. Malindi tried to do the same to us but wanted to transfer us to a self catering apartment block which cost half the price of what we paid in booking, without any refund on our part. When we refused and asked to speak to management the receptionist became aggressive, shouting and swearing at us. We felt very unsafe and had to leave the hotel without knowing if they would refund our money or not (they did, to be fair). A truly unpleasant experience, avoid this hotel at all costs. The guests we met whilst waiting to solve our problem all told us they were unhappy- very poor breakfast, dirty, dusty and damp rooms, holes in mosquito nets, insects everywhere in the rooms. Finally we were happy they didn’t have space for us!

Best hotel in stone town for me ... at the best price as well. it’s unique, the place is basically a piece of art.i like upstairs rooms better because of bigger windows and more airy. ground floor can be a bit mustsome rooms come with aircon, some don’t. some with shared bathroom, some with private.the best however is the rooftop terrace with seaviews on two sides, and the many other creative hangout spaces. lots of plants, very green. good for sunset with a beer, and moonrise (right now)AND the manager David is awesome!location is great, near to the port, and in a more local part of old town. rather quiet.very sociable on the roof where also a good breakfast is included.

One star for price and the second one for breakfast. It was our first night on zanzibar and as the taxi driver said it is ok if its just for one night. Cleanliness is the major downside-sometimes because of design (kinda hipsterish), sometimes probably because they just dont care. Definitely not as seen on photos on booking com

Filthy, ugly, perverse, obscene and disgusting decor. The manager is a nasty lying blasphemous creep who sprays poison all over the hotel. There are still tons of mosquitoes though. Sometimes theres no water. Sometimes theres no electricity. There are large rats that crawl up to the rooftop at night and run all over the kitchen.

We have booked the Malindi House one week before arrival for the last night in Sansibar. When we arrived the manager told us that they overbooked the hotel and there is no free room for us. (His explanation: They need to so buissness and always overbook the hotel). I would recommend to stay away from the Malindi Hotel and choose another one nearby.

Nice budget friendly place located in stone town near the port. We loved the way the place is decorated and the rooms; you can spend hours walking in the corridors and looking at the decorations , fabrics used, and photos hanging on the wall. The only take is that the rooms can be improved a little. But all in all it is worth the money.

The place itself is very basic and the recycling theme is a bit too much, although it give the place Some atmosphere! For example dirty matrasses. There is only 1 shared bathroom and could showen. Breakfast is basic but the roof top terrace has a Nice view. Location is good. Staff isnt really friendly.

Generally its a very nice and cozy place to stay. Very pleasent personel with very good command in English. It has a rooftop cafe/restaurant with a view towards fishing market and the sea as well as city around. However I was disappointed by some issues. First I was given a room without private bathroom, I didnt get breakfast because the restaurant was closed (for maintainance I think), although it was all confirmed in my booking. the wi-fi stopped working at around 4pm and restarted only next morning. I believe they can provide all that I just wasnt in a mood of complaining. To sum up I still recommend this hotel, just make sure youll get what you book.

Avoid this place as the owner is completely not prepared to provide hotel services with acceptable safety standards. We have booked a transfer from zanzibar airport to the hotel malindi via hotel. The transport as per our request should cost 15usd which was confirmed by the hotel, however the driver asked us for 20usd. When we responded that we can only pay what we agreed with the hotel he felt ofended. We then felt endangered due to the driver behaviour. Also, we have been taken to different hotel than we had booked. We have not been told about this until beeing in the car mid way from the airport to our destination. As we had no idea where we are going we felt unsafe. Please note that the region is known from robberies directed to tourists. This case looked like an attempt to take us to different place and then rob. We were forced to walk to the hotel we didn’t know and after seeing it we noted that the standard was way below what Malindi guest house is advertising. Afraid of our safety in a new place we decided not to stay at proposed alternative placed in unknown for us location in Stone Town (small dark alley). We had no choice but to leave the property immediately and book a new hotel ourselves. That all happened at around 11pm. This situation was extremely stressful for us and qualifies as breaking general rules of hotel services. This experience threatened our safety significantly. Malindi should be banned from providing hotel services. In order to guarantee our safety after we were forced to look for a new hotel. The worst thing was that we have been in constant contact with the owner until the moment of the pick-up from the airport and he hasn’t said a word about us being taken to different hotel. This is completely not professional and you don’t want to experience that when traveling to a place you don’t know.

On the way from the airport, my driver warned me that the guest house had been sold in the last few years and that the new management was not very good. He was right. The current owners must have bought it at the height of its popularity and are now running it as cheaply as they can to squeeze as much money out of it as possible. In the five days I stayed there, there wasnt warm or hot water in the shower or faucet even once. I complained each day and each day they didnt have any reason why the hot water heaters were switched off. Its pretty clear that they do this to save on the gas bill. When checking in, I was told they had a policy stating that guests couldnt see their rooms before paying for the accommodations. This is a ridiculous and unjustifiable policy, and I insisted on seeing the room. The room itself was directly above the street and had slatted windows that didnt close all the way and werent able to block out any of the sound, which starts very early in the morning because the fish market and the mooring for the fishing boats is just down the street. There was only room for the bed and a small desk so luggage took up the only other space in the room. If your room is within earshot of the roof and its on the weekend, there will likely be several drunk young people making a racket on the roof until early in the morning. I had to run the fan on high to block out the noise. The bathroom had mold on the walls but was otherwise clean. Although the hotel details indicated there was free wifi available in all areas, its only available within about 15 feet of the reception desk (presumably so that they can surf the web during slow times) so you will need to have a data plan on your phone. As I was checking in, the person managing the hotel miscounted the amount of money that I had put on the counter to pay for my room; perhaps this was unintentional, but everything else about the place indicated that it was likely intentional. The breakfast was OK, but portions were small and the coffee was close to water. Its four pieces of fruit, an omelet or fried eggs, three pieces of toast, a bit of jam and butter, and coffee or tea.

One of the cheapest places in stone town so you get what you pay for. Beds are not good and its not very clean but all of that could be overlooked if it wasnt for the fact that the staff was so unhelpful. They want to sell you trips/ taxI rides or stuff all the time and wont give you additional information about anything if it doesnt include them getting something. They will ask you everyday what you are doing today but not to be nice but to so that they will get the opportunity to sell u something or send you to one of their friends..

After arriving by taxi (other than the one arranged by the hotel, which never came to pick us up at the airport, even though we had received confirmation before landing), we were informed that there were no free rooms. At 10.30 pm we were walking around Stone Town looking for another accommodation. Moreover, after leaving the airport, we contacted the hotel to ask where the taxi was. We got a reply to take the random one from the airport (which was more expensive than the one agreed upon). I dont know why we were ordered to come if there were no places in it. We think that only to go to a nearby hotel (it was a friend of the host Malindi) where the price was 3x higher than in Malindi, having no other option. On the same night, another couple from Russia was deceived in the same way. Our mistake was not to check the reviews of this Guest house on Google, where you can come across many entries with the same situation. Then we realized that such situations are normal in this place. I do not recommend. I advise against. Maybe as far away from this place as possible. On booking bad reviews for medicine as reservations are canceled by the host or some employee (dont really know who we spoke to at reception but this gentleman wasnt very nice) the next day.

We arrived with a booking.com reservation at $ 17 and we were asked for an additional $ 45. The manager was very aggressive with us. We met a Belgian couple there who really advised us against this hotel, and that we had to go elsewhere. Their room and sheets were apparently not clean and smelled bad ...

Review №76

They foolishly excuse overbooking and ask twice the price per room. Booking.com cannot help. What is worse, the facility cancels the reservation after paying tribute and checking in. Thanks to this trick, he has the opportunity to leave a comment on booking.com. They cheat tourists in this way every day. Well, because if someone comes to the Hostel tired from the airport, the last thing he wants to do is to look for another hotel. After that, the hostels glory years are long over. It is now dirty and run down. On the plus side, only the roof terrace. Nice views.

Lets see where I start ... Disastrous place: its owners must have horror vacui because otherwise you can not understand the nonsense of those walls infested with photos of dictators, revolutionaries, romantic scenes of the 19th with slaves and odalisques, carpets (on walls) ), attempts of hanging gardens with rotting plants and rickety plastic bottles ... Ah! and corner with chill out pretensions that, in fact, was a compendium of cushions and carpets infested with mites and God knows what else. The cleanliness is conspicuous by its absence. In three days of stay they did not make the mistake of cleaning. Of course the bath would require a separate chapter, the house of Norman Bates would become the Buckingham Palace: as a lavatory, a pneumatic wheel, very original, however, that was permanently clogged; the lamps, recycled with bottles (neither criticized) full of dust from the last century or the previous one and cobwebs that are from the Mesozoic ...Do not forget, the rooms on the ground floor smelled like a dungeon and a rotten cellar. Finally, to highlight something positive, we should review the attitude of a very solicitous employee (not the owners) and the girls who served the breakfast (horrific of course, but it was not their fault: the coffee lighter than the Green Tea).Wifi? They do not know it: the network was never available and when something arrived, it was in the corner that of the mite chill out where, of course, you risked catching anything ...Anyway, its cheap but even so, the islands standards for that price are better.
