Best place to stay in Stonetown! Great host, great location. Will stay here again!

James and Gina were excellent hosts and were happy to give recommendations on things to do in Stone Town and Zanzibar in general. They also helped with directions around town and with transport to different towns around the island. The rooms were clean, comfortable beds, free wifi, reasonably priced laundry services, and a good location.

I was originally drawn to Zanzibar for scuba diving, and although diving was amazing, my favorite part of Zanzibar was Stone Town and my stay at James House. Its a clean, homey place with a big kitchen where you can cook your own meals, or if you wish, James is a trained chef and he can cook something up for you. The rooms are spacious and equipped with mosquito nets over comfortable beds and have fans on the ceiling. There is also a nice roof top terrace, which was a lovey place to be up in the morning and watch the sun come up over the town while listening to the sounding of the mosques.Juma (also known as James) and Gena are kind and welcoming hosts, quick to respond online and happy to help in person. They hooked me up with a local guide for the city tour, advised me of where I might stay for reasonable prices in the north and gave me names and numbers of people to contact.The place can be a little tricky to find because there is not a sign, but Gena gave great directions so we had no problems. Its a great spot because their house is far enough away from crowded tourist hotels so its quieter, but still only a 5-10 minute walk (or less) from main points of interest (including shopping, markets, most restaurants, the ocean and the East Africa Slave Trade Exhibit, etc). If I find myself back in Zanzibar, I already know where I will stay. James House gets five stars from me! Thanks guys!

I walked into this place on a recommendation from a friend who lives in Zanzibar. James and Gina were very flexible, easy to communicate with, and helpful with advice on things to do and making arrangements for activities and travel. The rooms are clean and simple, and the location was close to the heart of Stone Town but not right in the middle of all the tourist traffic. Highly recommended, especially for the budget traveler.

Basic no frills rooms, but the staff are amazing. James is wonderful caring and honest person. Highly recommended if on a budget but still want clean and safe environment.

Our level of English is not very high ... James made no effort to make himself understood and the recording was complicated (like all the discussions). We did not have such an understanding problem in the other guest houses.Bed not made on arrival, pillows that were poor cushions in a pillowcase (gap). Clean but dirty towels. Absence of water in the toilets for a certain time.The price is not expensive but that is not a reason to neglect the reception and the equipment.

Awful place, not comfortable, stuffy.The air conditioner does not work, there are no towels (all this was written in the booking). Instead of two triple rooms, the owner gave us one triple, although we demanded a $ 10 discount, agreed.

Unpretentious, a stones throw from the beach, very cool owners, breakfast included and substantial, ideal for one or two nights in transit, thank you
