Fabulous seafood, spiced to perfectionThis review is only for the rooftop restaurant. After our disappointing meal at The Silk Road, I was a bit hesitant to order seafood again in Zanzibar. Im glad I did, because it was fantastic. My wife ordered the tiger prawn salad, okay, it was tiger cub prawn salad. The prawns apparently shrunk. I ordered the seafood bouillabaisse and the octopus carpaccio. My wifes prawn salad was fried prawns, on top of beets, avocado, and seasoned rice on top of a bed of fresh basil. The presentation was lovely. She apparently liked it since she left a clean plate. My bouillabaisse was filled with calamari, crab claws, and prawns. The tomato base was lightly seasoned and exactly what I wanted. The octopus was boiled but not overcooked, tossed with spices and cherry tomatoes and layered on flatbread, like an octopus pizza. A slight kick of hot spice was perfect. It was excellent and almost too much food for us.Quite often, we complain that a restaurant is filling but not satisfying, because the food is mediocre, or is satisfying but not filling, because the portions are minuscule. The House of Spices delivers food that is both satisfying and filling. Bravo!
Seafood there is amazing. Service is a bit slow because everything is cooked from scratch. Pizza is not great espexially the anchovies one as there was something wrong with it (it smelled really funny), I am a big anchovies fan so I know how they are supposed to taste. The place has a certain feel to it, a bit dark and chilled out.
Delicious food and unique decor in the center of stonetown. The location is not in the more popular restaurant/hotel areas of the town so needs a bit of a walk in the narrow streets but quite worth it.Had the Seafood ravioli with saffron sauce and loved it. Just dont get the chocolate mousse! Its not a mousse at all... More like a failed version of a chocolate pudding.
Portions are quite small for the relatively high prices, but ambience and setting are comfy, food is served nice. Unfortunately, the (Moroccan) potato soup did not taste like much, bit poor for a house of spice..Better more local next time, better spices there ;)
Lovely informal upstairs lunch spot. Excellent real Italian pizzas. The shop has present quality souvenirs you wont find elsewhere which are sensibly priced. Well worth the detour as its slightly off the obvious trail.
House of Spices still manages to bring a lot to the table that makes this place a pleasant choice for eating out in Stone Town. One big plus is the original pizza oven at the charming rooftop terrace and that they know how to use it so well. In fact, I find their pizza offering really excellent and totally worth the money. Also their starters are so delicious. One of my favourite choices is the combination of thuna, mango, eggplant served in a very appetizing way. We liked the wine and the service was friendly. The only thing that House of Spices is still struggling with is their juice offering. This used to be not convincing before and did not really get better. Put in a positive way: Not too much of a real mango was harmed in the production of what was called a fresh seasonal juice but resembled a Fanta at best. The waiters did not care too much and even insisted that what they had brought to the table was a real juice. In the basement of House of Spices one can find some souvenirs like massage oil and nice scarfs that are hand-made, serve a good cause and make nice gifts. Also you can buy the usual overpriced spices and some coffee geared at tourists. House of Spices also has a few nicely decorated rooms that are at the same price level right now as hotel rooms that may offer more amenities when booked at the usual sites. It may make sense to ask directly at the place. All in all, I think Stone Town is enriched by this well maintained and managed place. I would certainly not hesitate to bring local friends here, too.
I definitely enjoyed the place and the food! The service was really nice and it helped us to make our choices !I ate the beef filet wrapped in bacon and it was really flavored! A house speciality that I could easily recommend! The appetizers (not really an Italian Foccacia as they call it) was pleasant but the onion quite spicy! Attention thus!
Very nice place, amazing and calm atmosphere! We were a group of 7 and had dinner here and we were not disappointed. The food was very well spiced and the price-quality is really good :)
On a recommendation, came to eat dinner on 1/12/19. I had the seafood curry and my friend had a marinara with ham added pizza. That night woke up with the runs and projectile vomiting. My girlfriend had the same symptoms on the 13th. Food poisoning! It was absolutely horrible and we spent the day in bed on the 13th. Have not had food poisoning that bad for a long time! I thought I was safe with seafood in Stone Town and the pizza was highly recommended. I am thinking the seafood and ham were not refrigerated .On the bright side, the store downstairs is cute. There are spices and textiles and the prices are good. Maybe just stop for tea.
Very Very lovely place. We went here to eat in the rooftop Restaurant. Service was good (for African Standards, meaning: you have to take your time wherever you go) but the food was delicious and the view from up there was breathtaking.
Great food, service, and location. I usually eat the pizza, which is baked in a wooden fired pizza oven. We often go here when we have a big group, because they have something for everyone (remember to reserve a table with big groups).
We had a really tasty lunch - yes it took a while because everything is cooked from scratch but that made it so much better too. The menu is a little hard to read but the service was really helpful and charming.
Wow INCREDIBLE food and atmosphere, we love House of Spices!! I called 1 day before to organize nice romantic dinner with my girl friend and the owner god back to me immediately via Whatsapp and organized everything, have never had such quick and responsive experience in all of East Africa! Recommendations, the octopus carpaccio, seafood ravioli, and the tuna mango tar tar stacked on eggplant all absolutely mouth watering!!!
Quite lovely boutique style hotel in Stone Town owned and carefully managed by an Italian lady. Rooftop restaurant with good local food, but you can get your pizza if you want to.
The prawn salad with pilau, beets & avocado is delicious. The pizza was ok--could use more sauce. Overall, great lunch on a peaceful balcony terrace.
Felt the portions a bit small, tasty but the beef came raw and they didnt ask how I wanted it cooked. Fine but not amazing.
CLOSED FOR LOW SEASON.Saturday night. Plenty of people around. Couldnt be bothered to open the restaurant but no notification till you get there.
Very nice rooftop restaurant serving well prepared seafood dishes and pizzas and flatbreads. The seafood Bouillabaisse was on fleek. Cash only.
Great food and lovely atmosphere but slow service and a bit on the pricy side.
A nice rooftop terrace with a good view over Stonetown. Their pizza prepared in their stone oven tastes awesome!
Averag food quality for the price paid. Wonderful view. Nice stuff. Excellent building in heart of town
Very good home made pasta and pizzas! A bit expensive compared to the average but really good quality.
The place is very nice unique also good terrace small min bar and restaurant charming staff and delicious food . They open though a week except sunday .
There are many different spices and fruits there but I expected them to be more organized. It is as just as in nature.
Great hotel and super nice food in the middle of Stonetown! Will be back for sure.
Centrally located and polite staff but they are neither eager to sell spice, nor make any discount to their hotel guests.
Theres a variety of hot coffee, good food with zanzibar spices
Very athmospheric and authentic place! Great location and frendly staff.
Place is stylish and unique. The food good as well.

I chose two fish dishes from the menu and had none! I accepted their suggestion, but I got the feeling that they pushed me! Tasteless food, despite the condiments! In the end, they grossly missed the sum of the account items! Honestly, it just seemed to me like another tourist-catching restaurant!
Truly a small casket ... very special what is striking are the scents and colors and what about the furniture is all in style! The rooms are as clean as everything ... the restaurant is one of the strong points ... the food we found very good and the preparation of the dishes surprised us! The staff really well prepared and very kind, and surprise of the surprises they have in the oven for pizzas ..but the right one! And the excellent pizza! Last important thing for us is that it is right in the center of the city. Surely we will be back.
I am writing a review about the restaurant. Let it not bother you that this is a hotel. At the entrance to the reception you can say that you have come to a restaurant and they will tell you where to go. The restaurant is located on the top floor of the hotel. It is worth trying an insanely delicious pizza that is baked in a wood-burning oven (amazing pizza with seafood 😍). By the way, you can see the process of its preparation. On the same floor with the guests, in the corner, there is a wood-burning stove and a counter, where the whole cooking process takes place. You sit, wait, and the smell of wood soars in the air. 10-15 minutes and your pizza is on your table 👍
Excellent cuisine, perfect example of the creoleness of the Zanzibarite menu. If you have time, take a cooking class with the chef, enjoy your creations and come back and test the rest of the menu. This restaurant is equipped with a bread oven where tourists can also find the flavor of a pizza as deliciously Italian as the owner of the restaurant.
Absolute bangOn the lower floor is the shop where you can buy various teas, spices and coffee. On the 2nd floor there is a bar with everything you could want.Drinks, snacks e.g. crispy calamari with a side dish for € 6Eat without hesitation ....The guys up there pay attention to cleanliness and are super helpful. There is also a decent toilet.
Great place, definitely the best restaurant Ive ever had.The service is excellent and courteous, the rise to the 4th floor is worth every effort - you get an excellent view of the citys rooftops. The food is simply excellent, we ordered a first course, pizza as a main course and 2 desserts. A hard place to find in the city but I would return to Zanzibar just for him
Fantastic experience! The drink was good for the food, good and quick service. Something this restaurant lacks is a better view! Recommended! And weve tried a lot in Stone Town, no one has been better than this one!
If you like typical, confidential and preserved placesBeautiful area! The food is excellent and the service attentive
Excellent restaurant, beautiful decor, really good food and hyper pro staff. I recommend 100%.
Very nice guest house and delicious meal offered by its restaurant.a big greeting to Mr CESARE, very kind, welcoming.I highly recommend this beautiful place.
Characteristic restaurant with excellent quality food. Nice furnishings and exquisite staff
Very dark. Very loud. Not very friendly welcome. After my current experiences I would not book it anymore !!!
Very nice home, the terrace is a little dark but the food is rather correct
We had expected a better taste due to the recommendations. Usual forgetfulness of the operation.
Well maintained hotel in the middle of stone town. good kitchen, nice service. very good value for money
Very special place, typical objects and a restaurant where you can eat very well.
Must visit - eg. great tasty pizzas and nice waiters
