Great place with refined service and pleasant breezes. Of course the sushi is fresh and typical accoutrements. Nice place to sip a beer and look out on the street. The biggest issue is finding this place. When you face the Shanghai Post Office, which is quite well preserved with many businesses, there appears to be no way up. You go around the building on the left side as you face the Post Office. After passing a few shops in the pedestrian alley, you will see a small open space and a small sign for Masa on the right. Go up the stairs, turn left and the entrance is there.I passed an hour relaxing and ordering sushi and a cold Kilimanjaro beer. There are some other items but the sushi is the star (about $1/pc). The salmon is from South Africa rivers and the tuna is local from the Indian Ocean.
This restaurant is ok, but nothing special and for sure not among the best food I had on the island. The grilled seafood was cooked in a sweet sauce that is not mentioned in the menu, the sushi was tasty, but super topped with mayonnaise (since when the sushi is with mayonnaise?) and the seafood crepe ordered by my boyfriend was full with mayonnaise and another sauce on top, that you couldnt really say whats below that. The grilled calamari from the starter were ok. Overall, I cant say that is a place where I want to return for eating, but you can definitely try the sushi (and ask for it without added mayo). Thank you!
I didnt expect to get such good Sushi in Africa. When you stay in Stone Town, have a look at this restaurant. As other people already explain, entrance is a bit hidden, but look for the signs or just ask people on the street, they will help you.
Great service and superb Sushi. The local Stoney Tangawizi is a superb ginger flavored drink local to Tanzania. The spicy sauce was spicy and very good. My only comment is there could be a wider variety of vegan options. There are 2 on the menu. Both the fresh vegetable roll and the vegetable tempura roll were excellent. And a nice rooftop street view with a cool breeze.
Every bite I had at Masa was delicious - from the sushi to the miso chicken to the vegetable tempura. The tempura and chicken came out first (and almost in tandem), followed a bit later by the sushi. We started our meal with a pair of Famous Grouse whiskeys, and enjoyed the sound of the guitar being played next door at Taperia. The service was also very good, which was a bit of a surprise considering the lunch Id had earlier that day. Our waitress was attentive and helpful. I do wish they hadnt run out of their Suntory whiskey (priced well below market value). With our three menu items and our two drinks, total for the bill came out to 55,000 shillings (~$24). Even with the 3% they add for paying with a credit card, as well as the 10% tip, the final bill was beyond reasonable.Certainly recommend Masa for anyone looking for either a change of pace in Stone Town, or simply a delicious meal.
Incredible sushi! Fresh tuna and the rock lobster sushi roll will blow your mind - - pretty sure they use an entire lobster tail in the 9 piece roll. Ate here twice 🙌
Location is very nice - cozy on the balcony. We ordered one sushi roll and 6 nigiri. It didn’t get served at the same time and it took almost an hour - that’s way too long (had it come together and after 30 minutes it would have gotten 5 stars). However the sushi was superb! Little selection though and it seemed very simple, so I was a bit skeptical. But the quality and taste was some of the best I’ve had! Paid 30 000 (incl one soda).
Update on my previous review below: The sushi menu has improved a lot. There are not more options. Would have been nice to see other options rather than salmon since salmon isnt local. But overall the sushi was good and not expensive. The vegetable dumplings was not good!Old review: (3 stars)This place used to be Cafe Miwa but is now a Japanese restaurant. The sushi roll wasnt bad either. Did not like anything else on the menu. The menu could be improved with more sushi options
Really good sushies. We tasted 3 different sushi types and all were good. Prices are fair.
Awesome place! Food is fresh and flavourful. Kind and friendly staff. Sushi is a mist as well as some tasty cocktails. A must visit.
Best sushi 🍣 real Japanese ones! Not a fade copy, You can go there with trust!!
Excellent food, huge variety on the menu, massive portions, if youre hungry this is the place to be !
I don’t really understand the high rating for this place at all! Perhaps it has recently changed owner/management. We came here on a Wednesday night at 8pm and were the only customers, apart from one other table, until leaving at 10.15. The service was generally good, a little slow considering there were more staff than customers but friendly. The food however was not good. We had smashed cucumber, which usually comes with garlic and chilli and some sort of dipping vinegar. This was just chopped cucumber with some sesame seeds. we also had fried octopus which was really terrible - we queried whether it was old and reheated but we were told it was frozen and then cooked to order. I don’t think this was true as it was a soggy texture like it had been cooked much earlier in the day and then reheated. The main courses of grilled fish and veg noodles were okay but not great - nothing tasted of fresh ingredients. The drinks were fine and reasonably priced. We didn’t expect standout Japanese cuisine in Stone town but we did expect fresh seafood and other ingredients.
Wow sushi! If you really a sushi lover this is a place to go.Btw, beef dumplings is also something wonderful. Highly recommended!
Being the only Japanese restaurant in Stone Town, guests can find Salmon at any given time. Jiro, the owner is the chef himself. Very nice sushi and other Japanese food.
Really terrific. Great food, wonderful vibe and a fair priced bar. If you want a break from Swahili food this is the spot. Its a bit hard to find but that adds to the mystique, it feels like an adventure.
Excellent service, excellent food! We were a bit hesitant to go for Japanese food because freah fish can be tricky and also we were afraid it would have nothing to do with real Japanese cuisine, but we took the risk and it was the beat food we had in Stone town, the owner actually really is Japanese and they make excellent job preparing it. They do serve only fresh fish daily caught, so definitely try the delicious tuna! We had amazing tuna bowl w meat so fresh it was falling apart and then awesome noodles and great shrimp tempura. I uploaded prices because they are very reasonable! Surprisingly enough much better pricing than all the bad overpriced restaurants in the area around! Also excellent friendly staff! Thank you very much!
Best sushi in Stonetown. Have been there already a couple of times and the quality is always great and staff is super friendly!
Amazing friendly service from Mr. Mkambwa, great cocktails and delicious sushi!!Definitley go here if you are in Stonetown, its a relaxed balcony atmosphere.
Good food, nice staff.Everything perfect there
Their chicken dishes include all the chewy and not very delicious parts of a chicken, the chicken miso-something had no flavour and the waiter claimed that a South African cider was actually a beer. The only good thing was the batter around the chicken tempura (with awful chicken inside). I really dont understand their current 4.4 start rating.
It was a good place to eat some local fresh catch for lunch. Nothing to fault, they are able to run credit cards just fine there. The sushi was prepared well and with the right style.
Excellent location at the 1st floor of a small passage in the city center of Stone Town. Nice classical Japanese restaurant, especially for the rolls and any tuna option, but we believe that in a seafood champion location as Zanzibar there could have been more options on the menu.Great choice of cocktails for the very reasonable price of 8,000tzs.
Service is quite fine, people are helpful and nice but..Sushi..missing sashimi, hand roll, no salmon, mostly tuna fish and no tofu in miso soup but a lot of onion, no ramen or bento boxes, generally not very tasty sushi but if you are hungry should be ok. Im big fun of sushi and this was disappointed.Prices are reasonable for what you get but I wouldnt go there againI didnt try any hot meals so maybe this is why the get such a good reviews 😉
Ran by a Japanese guy with friendly staff. I had the beef bowl, and the food was okay (not really authentic Japanese), but the fresh juice was amazing. Tables on the balcony are the best spot to relax, enjoy the food and watch the people on the opposing street.
Best Sushi in town, friendly and familar
The waiter was friendly and attentive. The food was good, I would say japanese inspired with an African touch. Beers and drinks were not expensive and I had a delicious watermelon-mint cocktail which I definitely recommend. The restaurant is a bit hard to find since the entry is not from the main street but we got instructions from the waiter who was in the balcony to find it.
Great Sushi and great service! I went 3 times in a few weeks. Highly recommend the Salmon!
For a Japanese restaurant that serves mostly tuna sushi and dishes, they didnt have it. Instead there was Fresh salmon....
The chicken rice cutlet bowl I had was not fried long enough to bind the breading with the skin, so there was basically raw chicken skin under the fried part. Besides that, the staff was nice and The view was good from the balcony over Kenyatta Street. Drinks were a bit overpriced. Was surprised at the high ratings this place had on other sites.
Nice location, great food, reasonable prices and very friendly and welcoming staff.
I tried sushi and salad, all very delicious and fresh. Place might be difficult to find on the begining but worth it to go.
Simply love this restaurant! Best sushi in Zanzibar, with a real Japanese chef and fresh fish. Their waiters are nice and friendly and help you on everything you need. The place is never too crowded and offers a nice rest in the heat of the city. They catered for a group of 13 people, including kids, to the best! Also offers great cocktails and cooked food as well (chicken /meat/sea food). I visit almost every time I am in Stone Town!
Great sushi and amazing miso soup, very attentive staff!
The best seafood and fish we had in Stone Town (and we tried a few other places around the same rate ~16000tzs), cocktails are not expensive (8000tzs), the staff is super nice and the location with the balcony is really good for the diner.
Had fried fish for a starter, sushi & chicken fried noodles for our main dishes, all of which were spot on!!! Great location with a balcony overlooking a busy Stone Town street!
Loved the food! One of the best food I had in Zanzibar. Greetings from Egypt!
A nice sushi / seafood option in stonetown. We got the calamari, fried octopus, and a variety of sushi rolls and nigiri. Everything was decent and reasonably priced for a stonetown tourist restaurant.
Best food I ate in zanzibar, excellent sushi at a very reasonable price. Great service and quick to the table.
The seafood mix grill plate and the sushi were delicious! And prices are very reasonable compared to other restaurants in the neighbourhood.
Although the sushi isnt the most traditional, its really good and the other dishes dont disappoint. Try the mango milkshake and you wont come out feeling cheated
Amazing service, authentic food. Not cheap but reasonable prices
Best sushi in town. It might be the only sushi in town but its the best
Nice sushi and very reasonably priced. Service is fast and friendly. Would definitely come back.
