Small portions at a way too high price. Its one of those restaurants that doesnt count on returning customers bcz its getting enough one-time customers. Its looking nice and kitchen is open, you can see its clean etc. Impression was good. Results not. NEVER got a VINEGAR based curry anywhere in the world, and even not on the whole island. In compared it has much more veggie parts than meat content. Definitely not satisfied here. If it wasnt that expensive we didnt eat it... And just leave the restaurant.P.S: The onion soup was delicious!

A tribute to the Great Freddie Mercury. Excellent food, fast and friendly service, playing all the hits from Queens entire catalog. Prices are fair. Nice view of the sea while you eat. Live music or DJ in the evenings. Make sure to bring cash (U.S. Dollars or Tanzanian Shillings). We tried using a credit card on 2 seperate occasions and mysteriously both would not work... but no worries... just bring cash. I highly recommend this place.

Mercurys is a solid *meh* for me.While the food was tasty, it was also a smaller portion than Id expected. While that may in part be a consequence of American dining habits; nevertheless, for the amount paid, I expected to receive just a bit more of each item. The greens were more a hint than a full salad, and the seafood ragout had approximately two of each seafood type.Of particular annoyance was the fact that the waiter waited over my shoulder and even instructed me on precisely how much to tip him. Id taken my meal at the bar, meaning his only interaction with me was to deliver the plate of food. The bartender took my order, served my drink, and chatted with me a bit. Its not as though Im unwilling to tip, its simply that this gentleman did nearly nothing to deserve - let alone demand/instruct - a tip.also not sure I like the fact that this restaurant so heavily traffics on Freddie Mercurys fame. Suppose Id feel better about it if I knew that his family or estate or whatever was involved rather than simply being some enterprising businessman taking advantage of a local icon.

Not a bad restaurant at all, food is prepared fresh. Has the view of the canoes and water on one side. One tiny little issue at the time we were there was a man restoring his boat with a kind of wood paint that would drift into the restaurant, was a little nauseating.

Extremely disappointed with what has become of this bar. I visited in 2013 with a few friends and we enjoyed our experience so much we returned every night for a week. Now though, I will never return and I will openly steer people away from this location. The staff is in no way welcoming, as they used to be, and openly talk horribly about the customers. To assume no one speaks Swahili is absolutely ignorant, speaking to the manager directly here as I could hear what he was saying to his staff as well. I never write reviews but I am disgusted with this place. DO NOT GIVE ANY OF YOUR MONEY TO THIS PLACE. Overpriced and the food mediocre at best. There are several restraunts close by that serve better food, at lower prices, and will be very happy to have you. Again please do not spend money here so that new ownership can take over and return this bar to its former glory.

While this bar is on the seafront, you will not know until the hour you arrive, what you will see or smell. There is guys working on boats on the beach, some painting, some scraping, some welding and some hammering. So if you want somewhere with picturesque views this is not the place. We stopped for a coffee and a beer, and were met with a smile. Shown to our table (party of 5) and ordered drinks, which arrived quickly. The furniture is dated and some of it is homemade, which you could say adds to the atmosphere. Me I say I put some splinters in my arse and hand. Not sure what it has to do with Freddie Mercury, apart from some photos and the fact it is on the island of Zanzibar where the king of queen was born. It’s close to the harbour, so if you have a wait for the ferry then jump in here.

Been to Mercury Bar considering its a must thing to do. but very disappointed with small portion size food and OK in taste and very pricey. When making payment as usual i was told that machine is down and need to pay by cash. When told i have no spare cash and i am happy to wait another one hour till your machine get working. Immediately i am told that machine has started and can help. Another twist is that i am told that machine only accepts USD payment and they convert TSH to USD at a very bad rate and so i have to pay another 15% more on currency exchange conversion. I am happy if they write in advance only cash accepted. This unethical behaviour has really left bitter taste in mouth and would prefer not to visit this place again

As homage to Freddy Mercury, this was an anti climax. There are some photos of the great artist dotted around. And thats about it.Nothing more than some wall adornments and the name. I didnt eat there but the cocktails were nothing to write home about. The place just didnt feel clean. Service was incredibly slow. Beer was too warm for me. Music was terrible and it turned into the local for football fans.It is just another bar on a beach. Its plus though, was that we were able to watch Zanzibari locals in their daily routine, working the boats, exercising, and playing football on the beach, from children to young men. Good location. Small portions for what you pay. The side of salad is more like a single slither of cucumber, tomato and green capsicum. Curry was tasty. They advertise free wifi and Visa eftpos for payment however neither of these were working. Im sure the eftpos was working as after pressuring me 2 or 3 times to pay cash and my refusal, it magically began working. They then tried to charge me USD. Im an Australian tourist in Tanzania... I dont have USD? and if im charged in USD, Id end up paying nearly double the amount as the exchange rate is so low at the moment. I asked to me charged what was advertised on the menu (Tanzanian Shillings) to which they refused. Very disappointing, annoying and inconvenient
