Design of hotel is very cool. Beach is clean and has beautiful sand, water is great. Breakfast was very good, they were trying to prepare variations every day (tho not much options, few basic things were missing). They are offering lot of water sports or trips right in hotel and also spa and massages (fee). There is restaurant and bar right on the beach, thats cool and also another bar right in the pool!Right outside of hotel there is lot of taxi standing and there is alcohol shop and fruit/vegetable kiosk. Then there is several little shops (where you cant find lot of things..) and few restaurants (not the best ones).Staff were very nice & friendly specially Hans at bar.Room looks stylish (but is not very practical).Hotel is surrounded by beautiful garden!Cattle with tea/coffee on room + little fridge+ Hotel is playing really nice music :)

The Kendwa rocks beach Resort is a wonderful place on earth. The beauty of nature is embedded in a high class hotel. The staff is warm hearted and very helpful. The restaurant is serving nice food. The menu covers a wide variety and is extended with daily specials. We spend 11 days in the beach resort and enjoyed every minute. The management of the hotel is close to their guest and always a good point of contact. Thanks for making our stay so nice!

This is one of the best resorts in the north of Zanzibar and the north has the best beaches. The beach has white sand and when it is low tide the water does not recede far from the shore.There is a restaurant on the beach with many sections to sit and relax. There is a pool as well for those who do not feel for the sea water which is close to the beach.The resorts on the north of the Island is more expensive than on the south but the beach experience makes it worth while.

I was quite skeptical after reading tons of the negative reviews, but our stay was very nice. We managed to get a good deal for 80 USD / night for Double Coral and we got a clean, comfortable large room with partial sea view. Breakfast was good (but not great). Staff was always kind and helpful. Their restaurant for lunch or dinner is a good choice as we liked most of the meals we tried.Id recommend adding more sun beds because a lot of guests tend to wake up early in the morning (6 am), throw towels on the beds to reserve them and go back to sleep. If you like to sleep long on your vacation, you might have problem finding a free bed after 8 or 9am, which was our case. Theres plenty of space on the beach so dont know, why management doesnt provide more beds and umbrellas. Beds are also in bad condition and should be repaired or replaced. Beach area should be cleaned more too, especially during the day.Another thing is that during check-in, they ask you to give them your passport in exchange for their custom payment card that can be used in the restaurant. Once you check-out and clear the bill, they return your passport. We refused to do that and always paid in cash (receptionist told us it was not possible to pay by cash in the restaurant, which was apparently a lie or lack of knowledge). During our stay, we met some guests who got their passport lost by the reception staff so we were quite happy with our decision.

Not bad hotel with a really nice wait stuff. The food is a bit special. The rooms are quite clean, but the filters in the air conditioners are not cleaned, so there was a smell of dust during air conditioning, as well as allergies.

By far, the worst service in the world. No one is helpful and a lot of staff have a bad attitude. Every time we ordered we have waited up to 2 hours for a drink and food.Rooms are okay. This place is only worth staying at if you have a room with a private pool, otherwise don’t waste your money.I would highly recommend staying at other resorts in Kendwa.

Very bad hotel.Run for your life. We booked 2 nights for the party but not worth it.Poorly managed we booked and prepaid in full a wooden bungalow and when we arrived they said they had non availabile and will not refund any difference and offered us a lower room, the room is unclean and have a very bad smell the AC is very weak. I had to wake up at 7 am to find a sunbed close to the sea. Everything is not clean or not maintained properly. Dont recommend.

Rooms, room service, beach areas were spectacular. Hands down one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited before.The loss in two stars is because of the kitchen. There were several menu items unexpectedly “unavailable” (probably typical to Hakuna Matata culture). If they do happen to have the dish you’d like available, don’t expect it in a timely fashion. We nearly missed two other tour bookings because of the lack of timeliness of the kitchen. For example, it took 45 mins to receive two orders of cheeseburgers and fries at lunch in spite of us ordering the dishes 20 mins early to avoid a hassle.On two separate occasions during my stay, I was charged for a beer (just beer, not a cocktail) I ordered but did not receive. Only after confronting the waitress did I receive the beers I was charged.95% of the food we did receive was very tasty. The seafood couscous was too dry to my taste, but don’t dismiss it if you really love couscous!

Keep away! Awful stay. NO WATER in the room « Forest » during the stay : you can t take a shower or go to toilets in your room!!! Reception just say sorry but did nothing. Many power cut, so air conditionner is not working good, rooms are stinking sewer. Room for 2 is expansive, 150$ per night .. but service is still expected. Swimming pool is not clear. Restaurant around much more better and less expansive than those at the hotel. No full moon during my stay but if you go during full moon party you have to pay entrance 30000 shilling even if you have still a room in the hotel. We trust publicity for this hotel but we were totally disappointed, you find many many hotel much more better in zanzibar, cheaper and with better service and comfort.

Mmh just to be fair, the seafood couscous wasnt that good need some balance on spicy. We could not get a double shot of our choice of whiskey, wanted us to have their choice of cheap open bottle for the same price of our choice, thats not right.

The worst hotel I have ever been to.The fact is that the builders worked at night time near my room and made a lot of noise, because of this I could not sleep.The room is old, there is mold in the bathroom, the age of the hair dryer could not be determined, but it looks older than me.The bathroom door could not be closed.There was no TV remote control.The front desk was completely unresponsive to my complaints.It was my worst vacation ever.Next time i will prefer spent my vocation in Egypt rather than this hole.

I had a great time! The food was good at night all dinner food was NICE! that grill night was really good also. The breakfast however was not as great. The customer service was good from the reception to the restaurants. The DJ in the evening was a plus for some good music. The security for the hotel on the beach is excellent had a few issues they was great to help with.Beach area is awesome and its close to jet skis and water activities. The room was nice and clean! I like kendwa rocks and will come back for sure! Thank you for the stay.

Best party for NYE celebrations. But party alone, not food, not even drinks. Its quite a mess with their system of prepaid card one has to buy in order to buy anything on site. Besides, queues are massive (yes 1 BBQ stand for hundreds or thousands of people). So one got to queue to get the prepaid card, then queue for ordering food, then queue again to give back the card at the end of the party. And then if you didnt fill up enough money on that card, you can queue again to refill it ... 🤦‍♂️So instead we ended up eating at the next restaurant next door which offered an amazing menu - similar price but was clearly better in quality, let alone waiting times. Drinks there as well. And we partied at Kendwa - the best of both worlds I guess.There are fences around hotels and restaurants but its easy to go from one to the others through gates

The organization of the new years party was really bad. You had to stay in line for half an hour or more to get a credit card (which was non refundable) and then you had to stay another hour to get a drink.There were many people and very little staff. You could see that everybody was very frustrated with the waiting line.Price / quality is not a place to be for New Years Eve.

Kendwa Rocks has a huge reputation for hosting the best beach parties on the entire island of Zanzibar. So naturally, my friends and I chose the hotels NYE 2021 party to ring in the new year. We paid TZS30,000 entry fee. They were not allowing taxis to drop off at the resort and had coordinated a park and ride, but the shuttle took so long to arrive that we ended up walking about 1km to the resort. Only when we arrived, did we find out that the party did not accept cash and we had to pay a TZS3000 deposit + a choice between Tzs50, 100 or 150 thousand shillings on a preloaded card. If we didnt finish the amount on the card, there was no way to reclaim it. They smugly told us You can come spend it next year when you come again.That would still have been okay, but for the absolutely arrocious, horrendous, terribly planned bar service. There were so few bartenders for probably, about 2000 people. They only seemed to be serving women and those who were purchasing expensive bottles.To exacerbate matters, the power went out at least 3 times, for at least 10 minutes each time, in the couple of hours we were there. And when the power was down, the card system for purchasing didnt work!Despite the advertisement of good international DJs, they could not pick and stick with a genre of music (aside from the Zanzibar DJ who steadily played amapiano and afrobeats). I wish they could have decided if they were playing 90s hiphop or 2020s EDM or RnB, but to switch in between the genres within 30 seconds of each other really made for disjointed dancing and a confused vibe. To top it off, they completely missed the New Years countdown, as the midnight timed fireworks went off before they even realised it was midnight.My friend who hadnt been able to spend the money on his card fought with the staff and insisted on a refund, which he did, albeit reluctant, receive.When we were leaving, we searched in vain for the shuttle bus. The guard pretended not to speak English when we asked him where to find it. Eventually, we ended up walking more than a km to the main road to meet our driver, and thank goodness we did, because no one was coordinating taxi arrivals anymore! It was a nightmare of traffic out there.For a resort whose monthly full moon parties are legendary, we were severly disappointed by our experience that night. We had travelled to Zanzibar over New Years, particularly to experience an exciting beach party. But lack of coordination, unpreparedness and generally, what felt like a dont-care attitude ruined our night. It felt, at one point, like a scam to just make money as easily as possible.Wish Id stayed for the New Years bonfire at Nungwi Beach.

We had a beatiful holiday here. Except for few inconveniences there was everything perfect. And we felt like in paradise. Two rebukes- in the begining when we came to the accommodation, there was a horrible fishy smell but after precise cleaning the air the smell went away. The second issue was with waiting for food, it was too long. Sometimes we had been waiting more than one hour. But I must say that under the circumstances the local people have to work, they were really kind and they deserve the great adoration and to improve hard work conditions. We were very satisfied tobe here.

Amaizing.Relaxing.Good service.clean rooms.Beautiful beachfront.So far offers only bed and breakfast.No full board but you can buy lunch and dinner at the hotel.

Stayed here for 3 nights, room is very nice with a pool outside. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. It is quite touristy as it’s right on the beach front. There are lots of activities to do on the beach but they are tourist prices. If you want something more local there are some great hidden gems nearby further in from the beach. (Check my page to find ones I went to and reviewed) Overall a very pleasant stay here.

I visited the full moon party at kendwa rocks resort with my girlfriend. I already heard that there are a lot of thieves in the resort and lots of things get stolen on their full moon parties. so i put my girlfriends phone in my backpack that can only be opened from the top when i take it off. but someone cut my bag open with a knive or razor blade and took the phone (new Iphone). the resort was not really interested in finding the thieve when i told them i got robbed. they have security there but they dont check whats happening in the crowd in front of the stage. i know its a crowded party and everyone should be responsible for their own belongings but i think when someone runs around the resort and cuts open backpacks in the middle of a guarded resort then the managenent and security service of this resort is also partially to blame. when i asked for any kind of compensation my messages got ignored and the issue was not taken seriously.

Worst value for money ever for a stay!I booked a 3 night stay to enjoy our honeymoon and celebrate my husbands birthday. For the price paid (840usd),I expected the all place to be premium and the stay wonderful. None of it happen. Walk away of this place! Below are the major flaws :- When checking out, look twice at you restaurant bill!! 100 usd were intentionally and wrongly added by an employee (which seems to be an habit to him). Weve got no excuses from the staff for that.- Most unfriendly reception staff we have seen in 15 days in Tanzania/Zanzibar : they never smile, it always looks like you are bothering them, they do not naturally say hello when you come across them, no staff to welcome you on your arrival- What they sell you as a private jacuzzi in your room is just a small pool with cold water. And obviously they charge you a high price for that- Unlike other hotels in Zanzibar or Tanzania, they were not able to organize any complimentary attention even if I talked to the manager. Paying for extra was the only option, despite our room already costs us almost 900usd.- during all stay toilet flush was not working properly ( even after they pretended to have repaired it).Seems to be a general problem as weve heard other clients complaining about that- No shower gel in the room on arrival- Taxi drive or excursions are twice or three times the price youll get from outside.Do not hesitate to negociate. It looks like the all place is about getting the most money from their clients with the lowest service....The excursion lady did not- Be careful during full moon party : prices will go 1,5times up at night (even for in-house guests!)

- Worst customer service from the reception plus their supervisor so called manager- Prices for rooms claiming to have a jacuzzi (which is all a small pool) aren’t worth it.- Not even iron boxes are present.

This place is a big SCHEME! I had booked the bungalow with sea view and they gave me the standard room with a wall view. I went to talk to the manager, to explain the misunderstanging, but he was clearly underestimating my intelligence, telling the fare I paid wasn’t for the bungalow even when there was the name “Bungalow” written on his own computer. He even tried to show me other reservations on a higher price, thinking I wouldnt notice they were higher because the number of nights was superior. Furthermore, he said he didnt have any other room to offer, even after I showed him there were many other rooms available at the property on a quick internet search. And he even tried to persuade me I was in a superior room, but you could tell from their own pictures it was a standard. They did get back to me apologizing and offering an offer for a next stay but there’s no way Ill be staying with them in the future.

I stayed for 5 days. Its the best destination in zanzibar for anyone who is looking for chilling, relaxing, swimming and enjoying the sunset on the sea in Kendwa rocks.Great staff specially Karem. you get what you asked for.Special thanks also to Omar who works in reciption, he helped us a lot.Great facilities and excellent location direct on the beach.The breakfast was changing and it was really delicious.

Its beach daaaaaaaamn. I mean u can go there u can rent a bed or table ( its cheap ) and the water its soo clear. The beach itself is soo clean even if it gets crowded. My only concern is the toilet

The service was not good at all.- in our room we had a broken toilet. We needed to call them 5th times: they never came until we begged them since the smell was awful- we sent some clothes to the laundry room. They never went back. My pants disappeared. When we asked for them they were really mean and not helpful at all. Not even an apologize. They asked me for the price of the leggins and they said that money will be discount for the worker salary. So bad.- the room was dirty (hair)- there is some workers making noise all day.NOT RECOMENDED AT ALL

We got to the reception and we were asked where we were going. Non black customers passed us by and they were not asked any questions. These people were not wearing tags as residents usually wear so why were we singled out. Not impressed. No service whatsoever.

Nice location. Facilities are decent. Rooms are not great, but OK.They have a nice cafe/restaurant, but food is slow. Long waiting times.Also, in general, there is not much flexibility from staff. You get one soft-drink with meal plan, not two. You get one towel for beach, never two. You cannot check-out late.Overall decent experience, not amazing. Has potential for amazing though.

Wonderful beach, neat coast. Lots of activities going on there. Jet ski, boat rides, etc.. Good place for tourists to shop souvenirs and stuff.. I love the layout of the blue sea and how it beautifies pictures.. Nice restaurants and beach houses around there too. I was just obsessed with the beach. I recommend...

A lot of people book this hotel because of the Kendwa beach access. No doubt Kendwa has the best beach in Zanzibar but this hotel was not worth the money. (Knowing what I know now, I would book a smaller hotel/hostel right next to it for less price and just walk to the Kendwa beach.) The room was spacey but super loud and they don’t have blankets. They just give you a super thin sheet and the mosquito net is not really a net- it doesn’t go around your bed and doesn’t close properly, leaving large spaces. They start construction literally next to your room at 8am. And by next to your room I mean the bathroom/shower windows only have a net and you can not close them! Of course nothing against this man- it’s the lack of management - but there was a man literally behind our window while we were using the bathroom. Aside from that the breakfast was terrible quality and they do not follow any type of COVID hygiene requirements whatsoever. The breakfast is served in a tiny- closed room with no social distancing (see photo). The positive side is the beach access, however the umbrellas fill up fast. You can see very pretty sunsets there. Also the food was not bad. Everything is just much lower quality and way over priced. Total disappointment.

I am a bit late of this review, i guess i got bored with writing ratings all the time:). Anyway i was at kendwa rocks two years ago for one week. And it was awesome. Its not a 5* hotel, but have a 5* beach. KR sit in between 5* hotels with double prices. KR is the best hotel for the price. Everything was working properly in the apartment. All was clean. Stuff was great. The breakfast was superb with like 6-7 types of local fruits. You have to wait for the dinner but hey its Tanzania, so Hakuna Matata. The best dishes were the local ones, like seafood, curry. Dont eat pizza in Africa. Eat the local food that is the tastiest. And the beach, and the view. Maaan the sunset. It has the perfect location. People come here to enjoy the beach from all over Zanzibar. And you just walk out of your room. So its 5* for me.

Horrible service. I asked a waiter if I could order a drink and he ignored me. I thought maybe he didn’t hear me, so the next time he walked past, I asked again. He laughed at me, then started yelling at his coworker in Swahili, they both laughed and walked away. No drink was served, I had to walk to the bar and get it myself. I’ve never been treated so badly as a paying customer in a “nice” resort. They then proceeded to sit there and do nothing so it wasn’t as if they were busy, just rude. Would not pay to stay there or relax there.

I believe the pictures say it all. I thoroughly enjoyed myself at Kendwa rocks beach resort.

Affordable restaurant on the beach, possibility to charge phones outside, quite nice for too, although we managed to order only from the pizza or burger selection because the kitchen was closed by 3:30 PM. Beware, fried chicken means actually a burger. One waitress was also not the most helpful.

Nice hotel white sand, no flexibility at all with check in and check out , this is quiet bothering, very late check in and very early check out, the food we were so hungry the first day and needed all communication skills to explain this , they found a solution, later on we were late in town and when we came back no food but pizza, and no way to have even grilled chicken , as it is isolated, you are obliged to follow their kitchen program, over all nice place to stay

I was amazing my bed was kind of uncomfortable but its so fun when you walk out out your house or apartment theres sand all over the floor and also the breakfast is delicious

Very spacious big venue even with full moon party it was packed but alot more space than expected and a classy vibe. Great location right by the ocean. 4 stars because the music for full moon party was terrible. No consistency with the dj mixing and very commercial. For me that killed the vibe but was still a fun night and a good crowd.

Serenity is top notch... food exquisite... beach clean and beautiful... rooms are clean and well managed. Service... cant say enough... their staff were so welcoming...I will do this again

The people is going to there for vacation, the hotel management should not forget that everyone needs to be relax during a vacation. We r not obligated to follow a hotels kitchen programme... for instance, if a guest needs to eat something on 11am, he should eat.. but we faced lots of limitations when we were so hungry, u could not prepare even a simple thing such as sandwich although we came from very long distance!On the other hand, no flexibility at check in n check out time, very late check in, very early check out! If u need extra 30min after check out time, u hv to pay 70$.If u arrive to the hotel before 2pm, u need to wait till that time with yr luggages n pls note that the kitchen is closed btwn 10am-2pm.It has a good beach with white sand.. But there were lots of locals to sell something near to your shezlong, this was quite bothering..

Colossal Hotel with beautiful white sandy beaches. Their roasted octopus was my favourite. Have some very very beautiful rooms as well as budget rooms that are just basic. Theres room for improvement in the Breakfast buffet however it was a great destination.

Stayed in 3 different hotels while in Zanzibar and this was the best by far!Design is comfortable and modern but still giving you the island beach feel with the wooden architecture.They have live bands perform as well as beach parties with great Djs!Close to everything and very friendly staff always willing to help out.

Tried to reach the place for full moon party however the party start time was 11.30 p.m. and we reached there at 10 p.m. as we were told that the entertainment starts after sunset... but to our disappointment when we reach there we didnt find any activities and the crowd also didnt look sophisticated so we had to turn back... people who has problem with bumpy rides then please beware as the road towards the resort for atleast 3 km is very muddy and the drive is very bumpy....

Every month, there is a Full Moon Party at Kendwa Rocks which attracts the biggest crowd from different parts of the island. The best part is that you can dance the night away or relax on the beautiful white sand beach. The entrance to the party is just 20K and its suggested that you come early to avoid queues for alcohol and food. Otherwise, the real party starts at night and goes on until 4:30 AM. Finding the drive back to stone town can be difficult so try and car pool.

Kendwa rocks is nice property and could be much better if they do minors improvements, as you could notice the staff ignorance and careless, except the receptions guys.. food in restaurant is very delicious for lunch and dinner menu although price is not high.I would suggest to take care of the satff more as they look unhappy at all!

Horrendous experience. We arrived to this hotel for our checkin and when taken to our room we knew it wasn’t what we had reserved and prepaid for. I had prepaid for a suite and got a standard queen room.I told the front desk this and they insisted it was the suite. However as a seasoned traveler who did the research I knew this was not correct. The manger Omar at the desk insisted it was the suite.Since there was no WiFi we couldn’t double check on line. We went to gold Zanzibar where are friends are staying to use their WiFi and realised the entire staff was lying to us, all 3 at the front desk including the manager.They kept lying to us until our friends who are local and speak Swahili came over to speak for our behalf. We are here for a their wedding. In Swahili they told them they overbooked the hotel and gave our room to someone else.My problem is that the staff should not have lied, but they kept insisting that I was wrong until someone in Swahili told them that they are trying to take advance of us. I kept asking for the difference in the rooms or my money back. This was not given.After some arguing the manager finally confessed saying that I was right and it was not the suite. He said he would give us dinner and switch us the next day.Fine. When I went to get the voucher for dinner the manger handed it to me rudely and spoke to the same desk agent as earlier in Swahili in what looked like bad mouthing us.The food was terrible as well. We kept finding hidden charges and things we did not order on our bill throughout the stay. When confronted they would take off the charges. Be very mindful of this. It’s a hotel problem. They all try to take advantage including the manager. Do not recommend this hotel. Stay at gold Zanzibar next door instead.I reached out to the hotel via email to report Omar the manager and the front desk team (expect the woman) of his terrible behavior and didn’t get a response back. That shows how much they care about their guests! If you’re going to the full moon party, go, just don’t stay at the hotel accommodation wise. But also read your bill!!! They overcharge on purpose and low about it until you catch them! So dishonest!

Not our vibe. Everything about this place was dated and the service was bored and unhelpful: no room service, no one to help with luggage (rooms are 5 mins walk over sand), restaurant was so slow that the food arrived cold and housekeeping never bothered to clean our rooms.Package holiday hotel for sketchy tourists. Would not return.

Nice place. The rooms were great. We were there 5 nights in the bungalows by the beach, but sometimes it got too noisy. Music from nearby hotels and restaurants could be heard. The food at the restaurant was nothing special. The cocktails were awful and not well presented. The waiters and especially the men were pretty slow ... sometimes it would take forever to bring the food we ordered and even worse when ordering the bill. Otherwise they were very polite and kind, they just seemed to lack a supervisor! It is important to note that the reception service was great and at a very good level, it seems as they had nothing to do with the beach restaurant and the beach bar!

We had lunch at the restaurant and a staff member sold us a VIP package to the hotels NYE Party. (See my previous review regarding the lunch) It was $300 for 2 bottles and it covered 5 people. The employee initially told us that we would only be required to pay a $45 deposit but in less than an hour the policy changed and we had to pay the full $300. We paid the $300 and were excited about our NYE plans. We show up for the party and were told that we had to pay $15 per person for wrist bands to access the table we had already purchased. Out of sheer principal we refused to wait on line to pay an extra $15 per person to gain access to a table that we had already paid for so we requested a refund of the $300. Omary (if thats his real name ... a tall husky black male) who is allegedly one of the managers, first said he had to call someone else to help us. The person he called was a shorter arab man who was very rude and refused to show any sympathy for our situation. There was another group of patrons with the same issue who were waiting and he was very rude and nasty with them as well. When I asked him for his name he refused to give it to me and told me he was just an employee even though he went behind the lobby counter and left with bundles of cash. After waiting over an hour and ruinjng our NYE we disputed the charge with the credit card company and vowed not to return. We know that cops in foreign countries often try to shake down tourists but for it to happen at a hotel that actually expects to get patrons, thats just ridiculous. I will never go back.

After making a reservation for September 2021 and paying 25%, my plans have changed and I asked Kendwarocks to cancel my reservation and refund my payment, there is a free cancellation policy.After 3 weeks and many emails, I am still waiting for my refund, if it ever comes... maybe when everything is OK Kendwarocks is great but if something goes wrong YOU WILL BE VERY SORRY TO HAVE CHOSEN this hotel...If you book it dont do it directly use booking or other honest intermediate.
