Africa House Hotel is an old historic building in Stone Town.Great location, comfortable, spacious, beautiful room and includes a good breakfast.Good value price. The restaurant has the most amazing terrace overlooking the ocean to enjoy the sunset.Good cocktails and menu card. The staff are very nice and kind.Manas, the manager, has been most helpful for any information we needed. We stayed two weeks and we hope to come back soon. Asante Sana!
Best sundowner view in Stone town. Fresh juices v good and reasonable at $2 each. Everything else felt a bit overpriced
It’s a nice historic place , but needs more cleaning ( spider webs) and proper ACs , the AC didn’t work well at all . The staff is nice overall, guy at front desk is a littleConfused . And not fast . Sunset Bar 5/5 food and drinks . Pics on the sunset bar review .
The sunset roof bar is nice, with a good ocean view, but the cocktails they prepare are very expensive (enough said they only have menu in USD, beer 4$, cocktails 6$) and not good at all. The mojito is watered down, the whisky sour we could not even finish, just dirty water. If the view is what you are looking after, it is much better to grab a drink and consume it directly on the beach
Delicious food of course while you sit watching the beautiful sea featuring Prison Island in the background and a floating restaurant. Place got quickly crowded with no masks except my family. People here dont believe there is covid and I suspect some dont even know about it. You can only see people wearing masks at the airport and at covid testing centres.
Nice terrace to watch the sunset, but cocktails were not good, whisky sour was watery... Prices for drinks :cocktails 6usd, beers 4usd.
Lovely place. Waittess very friendly. I had a seafood platter and it was delicious.
Fantastic building, amazing views and sunset. Drinks and food in the Sunset Bar were really good
The place has a terrace with a great view. Stick to bottled beverages. Tried the cocktails but werent great. Food was terrible. Ordered fish and chips. The chips were precooked and just deepeed in oil which wasnt as hot as should have been so imagine... Fish was chewy. The food was on my table literally one minute but when explained that could not be eaten, the cashier didnt even acknowledged my feedback and charged me. I understand I cant expect food as good as other places but it was inedible.
Very good meal 👌 nice view on the sea 👍
Lovely old colonial feel in what was the British club in Stone Town. The bar on the first floor has a spectacular view over the ocean which generally gives the perfect view of the sunset around 18:30 - 19:00. Food was better than expected.
The quality of the hotel did not match the price. I felt uncomfortable there and I was accommodated there for 12 days. The hotel staff often looked unnpleasant. They always cleaned our room just when we came to the hotel. The refrigerator was useless, it leaked to the floor. And the mattress was absolutely awful. The maids did not do their job, insufficient hygiene. In my opinion, the hotel is not suitable for people allergic to cats, there are really many of them in the corridors. I didnt mind so much, but cats have a lot of diseases, so you never know. Only one employee was nice, talkative, always smiling and helping with anything. His name was Magne.
Colonial but still great. Can use touch-ups in maintenance especially in the bathrooms.
One of my best restaurants to relax and take lunch in stone town
The sun is a superstar and the sunset view from this restaurant is stunning. We had the octopus which was as tender and delicious. A 10 out of 10.I would have given a five star review if not for how long we waited for the cheque. I was a waiter back in the day so Im sensitive to the demands put on people in these jobs. The wait was unnecessary and we had asked several times for the bill.
Great and very helpful General Manager. Highly recommended.
Nice area that is slightly away from city center, but still a reasonable walk to Stone Town sights. We were even able to walk directly from the ferry terminal in about 15 minutes (only about 1km). Right on the water and quiet. Uniquely ornate building and pretty, clean room. We sat at the Sunset Bar for a few hours enjoying dinner (the small seafood sampler which had more food than two of us could eat) and drinks (Kilimanjaro beer), watching the sun go down and some local men practice break dancing by the water. We liked the octopus and prawns best. The crab and lobster were a bit of work. Its pretty empty in low season (and cheaper!) which suits us just fine. We would recommend this hotel! It was a very comfortable stay.
Beautiful view, beautiful location. However we were drawn in by the lovely girls outside with the promise of happy hour. We had drinks and food, (which was also average at best and rather expensive), and then presented a bill for double what we were told. When we questioned, 5 people came to argue with us and called us liars. So disappointing as it was an otherwise lovely evening. Be careful with what youre told!
Cool view of the seafront with good dishes
We spent just one night before our early morning flight home. It is very old hotel, you can feel the history here. But it is suitable more for the business trip than leisure. Of course depends on your preference. We were satisfied and got breakfast packed because we had to leave for the airport before breakfast time.
A Hotel built in a historical building with heritage glancing through its marvelous architecture and furnishing. Service standards are very good and the staff are very professional and pleasant. This hotel has a library where you can find old and antique literature. Sea view rooms have a magnificent view of the Ocean through the windows. While sitting at the bar you can catch the most spectacular sunsets.
Very nice historic hotel. Beautiful inside! Super helpful and friendly staff. Location is amazing, as you can sit in their restaurant and watch the sunset and it is walking distance from everything you need to see in Stone town. Our room was very clean, and was spring cleaned every day, we had air con, TV, coffee, tea and water put in our room every day. Room service was very fast. Breakfast was included in our stay, great variety and very delicious. Only one thing that bothered us, the WiFi did not go all the way to our room, so we had to sit somewhere in the hotel every time we need to do something on our phone.
Best ocean view on the island .Best sunset views on the island.Very good prices.Very well organized management.Friendly staff.Great historic location. The whole island is old and needs renovation, even the airport, so for that I can recommend you this place , eventhough its old and historical , but its in a good condition comparing other hotels.
Prices for a cocktail was 6 dollars and local beer the price was 4 dollars. When you order drinks you also get peanuts. The hotel offers a good place to watch the sunset, probably the best place in stone town. The place looked popular for tourists.
Its always the best for me, a hotel with the best service, best food, i enjoy the presence of the sunset with the best relaxing music...your all welcome to have your peaceful meal at the hotel
Used to run the hotel back in 2004 to 2007
Complete tourist trap. The food is poor and the beer is warm (apparently because they sell too much of it). Yes it’s a great sunset but it’s not worth the money. There are better places very close by.
Friendly staff but disorganized. Ran out of towels. Very good food from menu. Sunset Bar crowded every night till sundown. Good view. Clears out quickly. Could use some upgrade but good value for money.
Great view, poor food, staff can be little bit more kind.
Nice oldfashioned hotel in the heart of stonetown. There is a siew view terrace with restaurant with really kind service and some delicious menues
Nice view, very expensive drinks. Staff was terrible, one waiter trying to sell us marijuana, acted very rude and tried to rip us off. We asked for the bill, he didn’t want to give us because our drinks were not finished. When we got it, he charged 5000 shillings too much. When we confronted him he just laught. Very bad experience and wouldn’t recommend the bar to anyone. Enough alternatives with similar nice views.Edit: after this experience we confronted the management with this and they handled the situation very well.
Wonderful views across the harbour. We stopped here for lunch but would assume sunset views even better. Food not bad, service as expected. Pricier option than most places around but probably worth it for the view.
Great food for a fair price
Nice place for enjoying amazing Sundowns
People there work like the turtles on prison island...absolutely disappointing!
I only went there twice to eat. Once was Chinese beef that was rather uninspiring. The second time I went for something more local, chicken with coconut sauce on it. It was absolutely delicious. The staff are a bit rude but I guess the nice view makes me forget that quick.
This is our first time in Zanzibar. As a frugal spender on accommodation, Im seldom in high rated establishments and opt more for hostels, camping and self catering. This is a personal preference over the sterility hotels usually offer. I have been pleasantly surprised by Africa House Hotel and I would recommend it here. The sunset view is one of the best from the Stone Town coast. The waiters are attentive albeit with an African slowness. Rooms are cleaned daily. Towels are replaced daily. Each night or room has been treated to ward off mosquitoes, the nets are pulled over the bed, curtains are drawn, aircon switched on and duvet turned down.Reception are helpful and cards are accepted. Its not 5 star. Its not the Hilton. But it meets my needs and exceeds my requirements.
The restaurant has a good view of the ocean. The food is moderately priced and its really good. It has relics from old town, sometimes it felt like walking into a museum. We loved it
I feel bad giving such a low rating because the staff was super friendly and helped me when I needed help but.... do you want to stay at a hotel with BED BUGS?After I came in tears because my other hotel had bugs that were biting me until I realized what was going on, the hotel employees were very kind and helped me to try an get a refund and offered me a room at their hotel. Because it is a known place I trusted them and as soon as I went in my room I started disinfecting and washing all my belonging. Happy to finally be in bed of course after what I had just experienced I checked the sheets. I was horrified to find tiny black dots scattered and little dots of blood on the sheets -a clear sign of bed bug activity( I was doing research all night) and I even killed one tiny bug crawling on the mattress and since it was 1am and I am a solo female traveller I had no other choice but to wait till the morning, pack my wet belonging and find a place I was sure wont have any such issues. It was horrifying to be quite honest. I felt itchy all night and I did not even get use to the bed at all nor the couches. I just sat on the wooden table all night until sunrise. And guess what- the next morning I showed the photos and explained what had happened and they still charged me the full amount of 70$ for the room in which I stayed in total 7hs.I thanked them for all their help but it was a horrible situation and I am pretty sure we all agree NO ONE would stay even FOR FREE in a room with bed bugs let alone be made to pay the full price....
Beautiful place owsome sunset, great service , and delicious food loved staying in Africa house hotel
Our bed was full of bed bugs!We arrived as a large tour group that had booked ahead of time and found our rooms had been given away. After about an hour they had managed to get us rooms (with almost comical problems along the way). The rooms looked nice enough, but when we went to sleep quickly discovered that the bed was covered in bed bugs.Avoid this place.
Africa House has an amazing bar! It faces the Indian Ocean and is perfect for watching sunsets and sunrises. The food is fairly expensive in comparison to other restaurants around Stone town. I personally didnt like their rooms. They are quite old and the bathrooms leak and are nasty :(General experience : average
Expensive food and drinks for a nice view.. We went to have drinks and watch the sunset, 6$ were later converted into 15.000 Tansania shilling though it said 13.200 on the bill (which is also more than usual); then we decided to eat and I took a vegetarian curry; I was asked rice or chips; I took rice. The food was not very good, contained some peas, beans and carrots, when the bill came I had to pay 4000 Tansania schilling for the rice!! Which was not announced so in the menu and is also a stupid thing: you wouldnt eat only a bowl of red sauce like a soup! 24.000 T.shilling was not worth it! So my advice: Just go for drinks (=beer!!) for the view but nothing more!!
Had lunch there. Service was good but the food was average and the portions a bit small (plate filled with chips/fries as opposed to a standard portion of the seafood). Good view though.
Its a beautiful hotel. Its clean and the staff... The staff was incredibly delightful- helpful, hospitable, engaging and accommodating. Our stay was wonderful. No complaints.
Where are the sundowners at? This is the place for you, very delicious cocktails, indian ocean view with the sunset, a cool breeze, slight music in the background, and travellers from all corners of the world, clean, friendly and joyous staff( after or 2 or 3 cocktails, one managed to make us dance haha) a big crowd of sundowners in the high season and barely no one in the low season. Been there both times.Clean rooms, comfortable bed. Did not eat from there as we would walk down to forodhani for cheap seafood. If u are there, book a room with the seaview and maybe if possible, wake up at 4:00 am one morning with full moon over the seaview. Magical!
Only visited the restaurant and bar. The place looks to be a bit past it’s sell by date overall. Lots of tatty small shops have infiltrated the ground floor and the bar overall looks pretty 1970-something. Very busy at sunset for a top sea view - which would be it’s main draw?
Honestly staff were aggressive and inhospitable, drinks are way over priced and change is slow to arrive. They are really only trying to sell the view. Men’s bathroom was dirty and no toilet paper with a blocked toilet. Despite the check sheet it had not been sorted out.
Wonderful hotel in colonial style well-kept and with fashinating furnishments. Gorgeous terrace on which have a drink at the sunset in an international atmosphere. Prices over the average.
Very bad experience - luckily we had a chance to come to check the hotel before our stay and the quality was bad - the hotel was unclean and smelly, not good neither for us or our baby. Unfortunately the hotel was booked for us beforehand by mistake; to avoid the payment of a cancellation fee we negotiated with the hotel staff. We were promised waived cancellation fee or maximum amount to be paid of 50 USD. What was our surprise? We were charged full cancellation fee = one night stay in the hotel = 130 USD. For nothing. At the moment the payment left our account the hotel staff stopped to communicate with us. I consider this as a very bad behavior so please be careful!!!
Great location in the heart of the city of Stone Town. Relaxing, quiet and very clean. A place of great quality and history. Enjoy the famous sunset deck to make this place even more exquisite
We had only lunch in the restaurant and this was solid food quality and solid service.
A very atmospheric hotel. The rooms should be renovated. Compensates the restaurant and sea view. Good localization. Overall 7/10.
Now its not good I see the rain in side the room its not good Indian oll they want money they dont doings renovation
Best rooftop in Zanzibar !!amazing viewamazing food ( take the crab also the lobster)amaziiiiinnnggggthe team are so cool and professionnal !!!its a must un stone town !!best experience ever
Nice atmosphere and the best Indian butter chicken that Ive eaten in a while. A bit pricey but great service and big portions so overall we had a good time
Was great last time I was here 15 years ago. Unfortunately this place has gone downhill. Way too crowded, overpriced, and just in a sad state of disrepair. Don’t waste your time at Africa House and head to 6 Degrees South for a proper and enjoyable Sundowner.
Went to the rooftop bar for sun downer. It was quite nice but we were charged 35000 Schilling for two cocktails...maybe because we are tourists?!
A tourist trap where the guides are bringing groups to earn money. High prices, low quality food and pole pole to the extreme.
Good hotel if you are on a fairly tight budget. I like the Swahili style of the rooms. Rooms with bathtubs, fan, AC & nice views of the narrow old town Zanzibar.
A bit pricey, but I always go around 6pm for the sunset. Great view and terrace big enough to enjoy the view.
Great sunsets on the terrace. Food is very good, nice cocktails. Fine for quick stop in Stone town ! Live music🙌
The perfect venue to see the sun setting over the ocean. I really love this old place, cold drinks and a good vibe. Go for at least one sundowner
Africa house sunset bar sea view was amazing & historical place.have a wonderful place to fun & joy..one of the best place in stone town.also have a Tanzanite shop.. best place to buy Tanzanite jewellers & stone.
Only went to the restaurant. Nice view but poor food and the servers seemed miserable. Food prices way too high for the quality.
No credit cards, broken wifi. Clean, air conditioned, comfortable, not too crowded, central to stone town, sea view, many restaurants to choose from.
Nice place good smoothies
Actually I booked from there but the day I wanted to checked in they told me the hotel is under maintanience and try to forward me an unknown budget hotel. They did not even phone or infromed me forehand... As a foreigner not to have any surprises keep away is my advice
Its just amazing and view is really superbly amazing,If want a good experience stay at africa house.
Really nice place and friendly staff. But over priced drinks at the bar and incessant lounge music drag the atmosphere down.
Nice staff, cool beer and horrible cocktails.
The location is the best. The property is very old. It needs improvement. Poor service. Breakfast was good with the view of sea
Is very nice place to relax with family look sun going down great services stuff warm welcome I cant wait to visit again best place you can be in stone town
Under African Hotel and Tours Limited and Managed by High Class Hotel. Visit and enjoy sun set view...everyday
The Africa House has lost any charm it may once have had. The sun-downer bar is a sad reminder of a Stone Town tradition that has turned into a cheap tourist spectacle.
Nice and highly hospitality
A unique place to view sunset in stone town.. Good rooms with very nice sea view restaurant
A great place to watch the stunning sunset In Stone Town, have a drink and the food is very good as well.
Good restaurant 🤟
The stars are for the bar. The best in Stone Town for a sunset drink. Go there. The sunset is one of a kind
Great place great food but no 😊 hour..
Lovely room with a lot of character. Good staff and amazing view of the ocean from the restaurant.
Great view from the RoofTop. Good spot to cool off with a chilled beer n some food
