Beautiful property, great food, huge pools, cleanliness was impeccable, service was warm and friendly from every department. Gardens are wonderful and the public areas spacious and comfortable. Rooms are very large and every one of them has a large terrace or balcony. The public beach is worthy of its amazing reputation, you really can walk a long way in either direction when the tide is out. Activities were fun and the evening entertainment was local and I appreciated the African music and culture. . The spa treatments were some of the best I’ve had.

Great resort hotel with private beach. Multiple pools with awesome view. Also, different entertainment and games were provided through out the day. The types of food that were served in the buffet were not really diverse as compared to other all-inclusive resorts, but overall a great and relaxing place to stay and enjoy. Strongly recommended as a travel destination.

Its not five star hotel - its more three+ star resort. Rooms are spacious and well equipped, there are few pools which need better maintenance. Main restaurant food is fine, cliff restaurant is not so good. On top, there are birds striking food on the table - no matter if you still sit there or not - its not pleasant to have crows around your head while eating (not to mention that they walk the tables until staff move the plates). Staff, in general, is helpful and friendly. Beach in front of the hotel is very nice. Road to hotel is shocking - they need better approach for five star facility.

Royal Zanzibar is an absolute dream. The entertainment each night was such a treat - from outdoor cinema under the stars to wonderful performances. Besides the incredible pools and beautiful beach location, the staff are nothing short of magic. The food... Delicious! The spa treatments although a little pricey (For South Africans) it was one of the best massages we have ever had. We had the best honeymoon experience. My only regret is not being able to stay longer. Highly recommend.

Staying at this hotel has been a great experience. To start with, the staff are extremely helpful and really kind. Margaret and Muru in particular were super helpful. At the lunch area, the staff has the kind courtesy to inform us on the opening and closing times of the kitchen, so that we don’t miss out of the food. The rooms was beautiful and spacious. Great sea view and I loved it.Food was delicious and overall I really enjoyed my stay.

The positive aspects it’s a beautiful well maintained resort with a great beach and pool facilities, staff are helpful, food was good, there were decent options for vegetarians like us. There are shows/events every evening, once they served a dinner in the sandy area with a traditional dance, other time there was an acrobatics show.. prepare some cash to tip the artists. There are some pretty annoying sellers on the beach, it’s almost impossible to have a quiet peaceful walk. They will remember your name and everything you said and will approach you every time.On the other side, we faced an unpleasant situation before our check out, when we discovered that there was missing more than 100$ in the wallet that was placed in the bottom of baby bag, so if you are forgetful like us and don’t always put valuables in the safe, take care, they do check your stuff. They clean the rooms more than once daily, so it was impossible to know when this happened. We approached the general manager to let her know, seems that she was not very surprised as she was already doing some investigation, so seems it’s not uncommon here. Check in is at 3pm but they were helpful and gave us the room 3 hours before and check out is at 10am.

I am extremely fussy when it comes to cleanliness and food etc. however this place exceeded my expectations. The food, rooms, amenities and THAT BEACH! Literally the best beach in the whole of Zanzibar. Definitely will be visiting againWould recommend 10/10!

What a truly fantastic stay!!!My partner and I spent one week at the resort to celebrate her birthday, and to have a much needed escape from the bitter cold of Western Europe...and Royal Zanzibar did not disappoint! From my first email correspondence to the final check-out, every interaction with the staff at the resort was brilliant. And this was a holiday where booking directly via the Royal Zanzibar website was worth its weight in gold! We received a free room upgrade, complimentary airport taxis and also a late check-out (which was a lifesaver considering our return flight was at 23:15). Definitely something to have a look into if you are also planning to stay here!I was fortunate enough to have the brilliant assistance of Rachel from the Reservations team to help make the stay perfect. This started with my initial email enquiries (sorry for all the questions Rachel!) and continued throughout the stay, via WhatsApp. She helped us arrange day trips, our COVID RT-PCR test and most importantly a birthday cake following dinner on my partners big night! The facilities were amazing (albeit the pool table may be slightly uneven, making for interesting games!) throughout, with incredible views from every part of the resort. The members of staff were welcoming, helpful and most importantly happy to share their stories with us and make the stay even more memorable. We could not have felt more welcome! And cant thank the staff enough for helping to make our holiday so unforgettable! If we are ever in Zanzibar again we would have no hesitation in staying at the Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort!

This resort was absolutely beautiful. The premises - the resort is so big, there are plenty of pools, all are amazing, the beach is right outside. The gardens and trees all perfectly maintained.Food - the buffet had variety and was sooo tasty and flavourful. They do their chicken and fish so well. The breakfast could be best.Service - the waiters and managers are so friendly, always checking if there is something we need, never miss a beat with customer service.Room - the Superior room was so spacious, bathroom had lots of room. Bathroom was amazing. The room, the bed and linen was spotless.Heads up- there is an infrastructure tax you will pay upon checking out that we werent aware of.Otherwise, I would definitely stay here again on my next visit to Zanzibar.

Overall: A good four star hotel. Location is great with a perfect beach. Grounds are lovely. Food is a disappointment but for the price we got we cant complain as Zanzibar is expensive. Service was great.Location: located in nungwi with its own private beach with crystal waters and consistent ability to swim. Note that most of Zanzibar suffers from low tides which makes it very difficult to swim unless you got miles out. However, nungwi and kendwa do not suffer this. As a result the location was perfect and beautiful. The beach is supposed to be private but theres beach boys and Masai who are a friendly bunch and of course will want to sell you something everyday 5/5Service: Staff were very friendly and helpful especially the waiting staff. Cant fault this aspect. 5/5Food: Underwhelming even for a 4 star. Just ok. Most disappointing is the lack of Zanzibarian cuisine and seafood. Breakfast is a continental one as just about ok. Nothing special. Best aspect was omelette and pancakes with Nutella.Lunch most days was served at the cliff restaurant which is a la carte. Same thing every day with again a lack of Zanzibar options or seafood. The catch of the day is a lie and is always tuna. Soups and desserts were the same every day (fruit and mud cake).Dinner, minor changes everyday but pretty much the same. I dont know why but the desserts all taste the same no matter how they look and what is my favourite aspect of a meal was not disappointing. If it wasnt for the passion fruit available everyday I would have been depressed. Again very few Zanzibarian dishes and when it was it was great so no idea why they didnt have more.Overall, 3/5.Buildings and grounds: The resort is large with 4 pools and several blocks of apartment style rooms. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. The pool buildings were also nice as well as the pool kept in decent condition. The downside is the residential buildings were tired and could use new external paint and minor repairs and refreshing the Woodwork. It brought a bit of a tired and lack of care feeling to the place. 4/5Room: We stayed in a deluxe superior room for 7 nights. It was large with a Super king bed that was very comfortable with a mosquito net around the whole bed. It had nice furniture in classic afro zanzibar style. The bathroom was a bit tired and not very luxurious comparitvely with basic basins and a bath (we did not use) and a shower room which was ok.The balcony area had sliding doors which did not close properly and again were a but tired looking. Rattan set on the balcony was fine. Robes and slippers are provided although design for small people as they did not fit me as a size 44.Safe is provided and works fine. Overall 4/5 (as youd expect for a 4 star)Activities: Minimal, no paddle boats or kayaks even. Some stretching and pool aqua dancing on occasions but too early for me before 10am. Book excursions by negotiating with beach boys.

Holy Moly!! What a hotel! Literally the best hotel experience EVER!!! All the way from the pools to the rooms and the staff, nothing disappointed. Chef Sohvan and Chef Bhakti were always there to impress with a variety of seafood and international cuisines always available on the tables. The dining room (Spices) buffet was forever tempting with a selection of delicious cakes and pastries (had to mention that first), salads, a live pasta station (literally on my plate every meal) and a live pizza and bbq station. In terms of activities, ask the front desk and they will arrange - within a 10 min drive, you can swim with turtles and fishes (pro tip; dont wear anything green or leafy :P). Going into town; about an hour drive, you can experience live interactions with Cheetahs, Tigers, Monkeys, Bush babies and the cutest but nosiest Otters! While in town, also check out a local food attraction called Furudani, where you are hounded but tempted by an abundance of local BBQ and snacks from the vendors. To end a relaxing and unforgettable vacation, my husband and I got to indulge in a floating basket breakfast by the infinity pools (a new concept they have introduced and a MUST TRY!)

Very Calm side of Zanzibar. A place for rest and rejuvenation of the mind. A beach hotel with 3 infinity swimming pools. Two restaurants stand within the facility and two bars operating with one going for 24 hours. A luxurious Spa is available. Big rooms extending from Superior rooms, superior deluxe rooms to suites.Although large parking area is available the hotel is far from town centre and most visitors make way through booked transport (best book from their hotel website). The food is amazing executing different cuisines around the globe. All Inclusive packages are available on booking. Water activities along the beach such as snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing and visits to smaller islands are organised by the hotel. The cost of indulging is slightly above average $$$.

Lovely resort. Enjoyable stay. The hotel claim to be a five star facility. My assessment is that the resort is no way close to a five star resort as it is claimed.Spent eight nights from 26 December 2019 until 3 January 2020.The Resort has a Lovely Reception area and we received a warm welcome. Seamless check in and thereafter taken to a spacious air conditioned room with a nice balcony. No room service is offered and you get told this on arrival. Throughout our stay, room telephone was out of order, despite being promised it will be sorted. So one could not phone reception to alert them of any other maintenance issues. Fridge is available in the room but not stocked despite being on all inclusive package. Management should consider this item. Spacious bathroom and a lovely bath tub. Each hotel block has four floors, ground plus three. No elevators. Finishes are quite dull for a five star rating and attention to detail was given as one would expect for a five star hotel, eg, bath towels in our room were consistantly old and house keeping happens quite late in the day despite make up my room sign. Mosquito nets available. Free WIFI available in the rooms although at times signal is week and very slow.Staff servce is general excellent and staff members are really trying to please. Two restaurants available on the premises, buffet restaurant (main restaurant) and beach side restaurant. Both have no air conditioner in dining areas. Cover your drinks when you are still dishing as flies get inside your drinks. Food selection is good and local drinks are adequate. Special new years eve dinner was arranged, at an additional price, on the beach and was enjoyable. Enjoyable music and celebrations were special. The event was fantasticBest attractions are your swimming pools and the beach. If you want relaxation be early as nice sports are taken up pretty early. The Resort arrange daily activities for those who want to participate. A nice way to keep active. If you settle by card , additional 5% is charged. I guess this is a normal practice on some countries.Overall a good hotel, enjoyable stay, good memories and friendly staff. However if you go and expect a five star establishment, you will be greatly disappointed.I will still visit the resort again. The resort is lovely and enjoyable. Three to four nights a reasonable period

Stayed in November 2019. Nice looking hotel. Great selection of pools. Staff were friendly. Food was mediocre at best, have had much better food in a lot cheaper all inclusive resorts in Spain. Had to pay $2 for ice cream which was odd for all inclusive. Cocktails were watered down, a lot, could hardly taste any alcohol so stuck to beer and wine, which were fine. The hotel shop that was there was incredibly overpriced. $36 for a bottle of sunscreen was not acceptable. Bring lots of suncream with you! There were many occasions where I was trying to sleep or relax by the pool and had staff interrupting my relaxation time by trying to get me to either order more expensive wine for dinner, come to some exercise class or something similar. That was annoying.I personally thought the entertainment in the evenings was cringe worthy, but then other guests seemed to enjoy it.Wifi was very slow. The service or equipment they used to send a TV signal to the rooms often stopped working.Phone didnt work in the room.Umbrella supplied in the room didnt work. They put a customer satisfaction survey in the room to fill out but no pen to fill it out with ☺️The staff have obviously been told to say Jambo! How are you? to every guest as you walk past them. This was fine for the first day, but got annoying having to talk to every staff member everyday. One night I got Jambo! How are you? from the same staff member 3 times within 10 minutes ☺️. It did not feel genuine. If you wander along the beach outside the hotel be prepared to get pestered by multiple salesman trying to sell you garbage. When flying back from Zanzibar be prepared to get aerosols (e.g. mosquito spray and deodorant) confiscated when departing from the airport. Basically they see anything with a flammable symbol on it as a risk.Overall had a good time, but there were many small annoyances that prevented the stay from being an excellent one.

I am ambivalent about this hotel. The resort itself is pretty and worth staying at. But it has some major flaws. The biggest problem is that it is very loud and not very relaxing. The noise protection of the rooms is poor. You hear every word from the staff outside, and they are up early. But the biggest issue is the crows/ravens. It is sheer terror! There are dozens of these birds in the resort area, they are loud and annoying, they terrorize the area from early morning (5am) to late evening with their ugly sounds. I was traumatized by them and it cost me a lot if hours of precious sleep on my rare vacation time. For a reason to not recommemd this place if you seek for silence and relaxation.

We (31 and 30 years old) stayed here for one week as we had our honeymoon. We booked a junior suite with sea view and All-Inclusive. As we arrived the unpleasant journey began as NO suites where available due to restoration works. In the beginning they told us that we finish everything in the next 2 days. After three days we asked our representative from Thomas Cook and he told us that the suites wont be available till July - bummer. The next problem: No working safe and no working telephone. We asked 5 times to fix it, but as u can imagine the safe didnt got fixed. At least the fixed the telephone after 3 days :/Beside this we got told by other guest that they got nice flowers arrangements on their beds - We didnt..Even after our complaints the hotel did NOTHING to make our honeymoon special neither got we any compensation for all our problems.Even if the hotel and pools are nice, I can only give one star and cant recommend this hotel for honeymoon.

Review №58

The resort as such has a big potential but is by far not at the level the price suggests. We paid a 4 digit Dollars amount (yes well above 1000 dollars!!) per night per room for a family of 2 adults and 2 kids.Starting with the basics: water in the bathroom is at times either not available or the pressure is so low that you cant really use it for shower or washing hands, etc.Electric power goes off couple of times per day. Both water and electricity are a no-go for the price level, even considering local challenges.Another basic in 2019 is WiFi: this is the worst of all! You can hardly use it in any room and even in the public areas (where according to the IT manager) should work best you cant watch a video (low quality) for more than 2-3 minutes in a row. It keeps disconnecting, keeps saying that internet might not be available, etc. Even going for the Premium (5 dollars a day) option doesnt help. Pretty much the same spotty and very irregular connection in the public areas and close to no connection in the room.Given the level of humidity in the open air we hoped to use the gym for our work out. Also this was very disappointing: first of all is not in a closed environment with Air Conditioning but rather a roof in a complete open air. Very few tools to be used. We wanted to use the treadmill, there are 2 and both were out of order for the entire 8 days we were there.Last but not least is the hygienic situation of the entire resort: you really have to close your eyes on many things if you dont want to get upset every 2 minutes: the way things are kept clean in the restaurant is far below any minimum standard you would expect in any public place let alone in a (allegedly) 5 stars hotel. The room was also never really cleaned well, bed-sheets were not changed in 8 days and towels were not consistently collected even if left in the bath-tub.Same experience in the SPA. If you decide to use it, avoid at least the shower, a disaster from hygienic point of view.On the positive side, the pasta corner, managed by Francesco in the main restaurant, is really good and both variety of sauces and quality of the final dishes made it worth to try every day!Swimming pool, which are designed in a very nice way and are very big and nice, are dirty and do not really give the feeling that your skin will be fine after having taken a swim. Really a pity as the pools as such are really nice.We were here for the new Years Eve and despite the price we paid (as per above) we had to pay another 250 dollars extra for the dinner and best of all, in case we wold have liked to have some sparkling wine (yes the hotel is ALL-IN) we had to pay that extra (over the dinner extra!!) again. Im not talking only about best champagne, on the list there were wines for 20-50 dollars which were also not included! All in all, the place is worth at best 1/4 of the actual price. If they review the price list in that direction maybe, but again the hygiene is something you need to live with...I talked and gave same feedback to the General Manager on site. Not sure if and how she will reply to this review. Only thing she had to say to me when meeting was that she is not the one setting the prices and that she will report my concern (not sure to whom). The day after she left a short notice into our room repeating the same thing (see picture below). At check out they threatened us to leave the room by 10 AM otherwise they would charge 200$ more. Only upon my insistence they agreed to let us leave the room at 12 (which is the standard in all other 5 stars hotel). When paying the bill, a few thousands of dollars, they asked for cash (!!!) or if I paid by credit card they would charge additional 5% fee. UNBELIEVABLE!! Only after I involved the General Manager they waived this extra fee.A renovation seems to be in the plan (VERY much needed). If they really do a fantastic job and they halve their prices you might want to try your luck! Here below a few picture of the infrastructure showing that also safety is an issue here.

The resort advertises itself as 5 star but it is a 4 star at best. The rooms are 3 star quality, I had better towels at 2 star hotels, the finishing of the construction is cheap and the room is big but almost empty. The staff is friendly but their management is ineffective. I had a beach dinner on a Tuesday night but I was requested to order the plates on Saturday morning (they also tried to make me order the wine the same day). We always ordered an expresso and a capucinno when seated for breakfast, they managed to bring it once out of seven times before we finished the breakfast. The food is fair, a bit repetitive and there is no alternative restaurant for dinner. The included wine is impossible to drink (I would not use it for cooking). There is no room service available (I always thought that this was a requirement for an establishment to be labeled 5 stars). The gym is completely worn down and can be considered unsafe to use the machines. The entertainment provided by the resort seems ok, but you better speak Italian. The swimming pools are huge and nice but the space around them is minimal so everyone is cramped in the chairs shoulder to shoulder (the beach is public so you must leave your belongings on the pool area).

It is a 5 star want to be, but they have a long way to get there. It is half a construction site, every building is currently adding a floor on the top, so there are workers everywhere digging, fixing, carrying construction materials, making noise. WiFi is snail slow. Get your data sims, at least 10 GB per week so you are free from local networks provided by hotels. In fact, I hardly used any hotel WiFi in Tanzania. The food is miserable here! You imagine a nice holiday all inclusive. I would rather pay for a nice dish than 10 terrible subquality miserable buffet dishes which I don’t even care to touch. Pls do something about it! The beach is non existent. You are on a cliff, the pools are nice and big, but no beach chairs on the beach. There is high and low tide even here, the narrowest part of the beach. When it is high tide you can’t walk over to Kendwa beach. In fact in my opinion, the beach gets much better towards Kendwa, to the north of the hotel it is terrible, full of people wanting to sell you things and seaweeds and garbabge. They tried hard to provide semi club med experience w some entertainment, but nobody knows what’s going on and when, not even the reception who sends you running around to figure it out on your own. The only enlightening part of our stay is the spa, beautiful and very high quality price ratio. Try to book it when it is high tide so no one is walking and making noice below the cliff your spa room is on. The 4 pools are big and nice so is the sunset. The other positive side is the big room and they allow you to have 2 kids in the room. It could be a 5 star, but they have a lot of work lined up for them before they get there.

Definitely not 4 or 5 star hotel and its the weirdest all inclusive ive ever been to as it isnt all inclusive. If you want ice cream you have to pay for it. If you want drinks after 11pm you have to pay for it. If you want a popular cocktail you have to pay for it. If you want to eat in the a la carte restaurant and you want to eat fish, Seafood or steak - guess what? You have to pay for it. Ive been to many all inclusive hotels and i have never come across this. The food is mediocre at best. The saving grace is that the staff are lovely, helpful and very friendly and the beach views incredible.

Do not expect what you see in pictures. They are restoring the hotel full time during the night as well. Lot of noise. The state of the room is a disaster. The have not been cleaned or maintained for years. Avoid this hotel, it’s not a 5 stars

Dream location for well deserved relax. Friendly staff provides great atmosphere for excellent holiday. The food is OK but there are not too many choices to cater for every taste and European cuisine options arent that great.

Jambo! Amazing and friendly staff that will go the extra mile to make your stay a memorable experience. Units J, K and L have the better views that overlook the pools and ocean. Daily activities like water polo, volleyball and morning yoga on the beach ensure that there is always something to do. Get the All Inclusive package for an unlimited selection of drinks.

You have to wake up early to occupy the beachbed. Many many ppl lay close to each other, someone smoking :S After one time staying on the beach, we never came back. The pool (the one with a bar) is nice but it has only 2(!) beds/umbrellas. So we have to stay in the water all the time. Telling the truth, we took a few excursions to minimize staying in hotel time. I think, long time ago this was 5* resort, but some greedy management changed this: too much ppl and too less of personal. Minibar is empty! (it says: fill yourself from the bar) The location is very good, rooms also fine (we took a suite). I cant say I would not recommend, because there are many worse places around, but I will not come back, sorry.

We stayed in this hotel for 8 nights in june.We booked a superior deluxe room, though what we got was a superior room. The staff told us that there is no difference between these rooms, though a superior deluxe room should be on the third floor and our was on the first floor. On our arrival the AC was not functioning in the room, the staff fixed the problem the same day. Some rooms were in renovation, so during the day there were always loud noises from the workers near our room, a quiet afternoon in the suite was out of the question,The house keeping is coming and going like 4-6 times a day. The biggest complaint here goes to the house keeping. We have found our room at least 3 times unlocked with the door open without anyone being around or inside the room. Once the door was opened during the late evening, when we were already in the room and left open which resulted in the room filling with mosquitos.Talking about the mosquitos - there were no mosquito nets on the beds, according to the staff there is no malaria currently in Zanzibar, hakuna matata - the net is not required - but the mosquitos, beleve me, theyre still there, and thats far from hakuna matata. The food was good, though a bit repetetive. The staff is very friendly, always annoyingly inquireing on how are you, when you answer - good, fine, okay, great or anything else in that matter, they always say youre welcome - I think that thats a some sort of direct translation from their Suahili language to English. So to sum it all up - our 8 night vacation in this hotel was okay, not a great memorable moment of our lives - just okay. From my point of view the hotel is far from 4 stars, that it advertises.I would not choose this hotel on my next trip to Zanzibar and would not recomend it to my friends, i do believe there are better options in Zanzibar.

Fantastic, servise, so nice people, everything tidy and working.Best beach, drinks for free even alcoholic (not best brands like Smirnoff etc., but non-branded vodka, gin did just fine for coctails) Nicely prepared food, so tasty and a lot to choose from.I would recomend to everyone who want to relax and enjoy one of the best beaches with so clean and nice water for relatively affortable money.
