We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. Its a small, cozy and quiet place. Owners and staff are very polite and ready to help. Breakfast could be better; however, a la carte dishes for lunch and dinner are excellent. Cons is that you have to pay in cash (even accommodation), otherwise you would be charged 5% for card usage.Overall excellent 3 star hotel, highly recommended.

Very cozy location and good service.Just be aware of flies in your food (from the burger )i even maybe have eaten the head of the fly.🤣Luckily my stomach is strong.💪

We’ve spent a total of three weeks here this year alone and planning on coming back next year again. It is the perfect place for a family with kids or for a quiet getaway. The rooms are clean, staff are friendly and the food is great. And, none of us (8 people) got sick during the three weeks which is quite unique..!

This was an amazing experience. The owners are wonderful people, always helpful, always smiling and always making sure youre having the best time. The hotel staff was great too and so we just felt so comfortable. You actually dont even feel like staying in a hotel as the atmosphere is so warm and friendly.The place itself is beautiful. The building is surrounded with exotic plants and trees, the pool is always clean and warm, the dining area is peaceful and nicely setup, and the white sand beach is literally right in front of the hotel. We enjoyed every moment of this paradise from beautiful sunrises above the sea horizont to drinking delicious cocktails laying in hammocks.We did a lot of activities during our Zanzibar holidays. Fed giant tortoises, hiked in Jozani forest, swam with sea turtles and even with wild dolphins, snorkelled and scuba dived. The island is a fascinating place with so much to do. The locals are really nice and helpful and last but not least, the food is great! We would definitely come back and when we do, we will definitely stay in Zanzibar Retreat Hotel again.

The place is great and clean.The meals are decided in the morning and then cooked for you at the time you specified.You have a great swimming pool and the sea close by.When the tide is low, it can get difficult to reach the sea, you need special shoes to get there so you dont step on anything dangerous.Its almost a 5 star for me, a few unimportant things were missing to give a better experience

The owner is super hands on and makes sure you have a fantastic time. Great wine list and a very varied menu with lots of veggie options too. And its all delicious!

Perfect retreat. We had a fine furnished room with a great bed and ac, the private balcony overlooking the beach and the sea was incredible. The restaurant was delicious in Any way all Day. Jan, the manager, made everything possible for the most relaxing stay. You feel privileged and at home. The pool was Nice and relatively Big, and the beach splendid, Well equipped with chairs and shades. You Can socialize in the bar or meditate in peacefulness, the staff is discrete and professional. It was a pleasure. Very tasteful and yet cosy and friendly.

We loved the Zanzibar Retreat Hotel. Its a small (12 room) hotel located right on the beach. The view from the dining area is like a postcard as you watch the Indian Ocean and waves breaking on the nearby reef. The owners were terrific- friendly, attentive, and helpful. The food is outstanding, certainly the best in the area as evidenced by the repeat visits from guests from other hotels. We did a wonderful snorkeling excursion (like swimming in an aquarium with the wide variety of fish) and our guides paid the Zanzibar Retreat the highest compliment, noting When our parents and friends come to visit, we book them at the Zanzibar Retreat. In short, I highly recommend and give the hotel my deep appreciation for making our family vacation a great experience.

Great place. Its reasonably small (12-ish rooms) with a beautiful view of the ocean, great food and a pool. The own comes over every day to make sure everything is going well. Friendly staff who speak English well. This hotel seems to be the best in the area! I would definitely recommend Zanzibar Retreat Hotel!

We only had 2 nights at the Zanzibar retreat but they were perfect. Jan and Solona (not spelt correctly) were super welcoming and helpful, food was top notch (the ravioli, the pancakes with smoked honey), staff were also friendly and attentive.We chose it because they do connected rooms perfect for our family of 5, seemed to be popular with mainly honeymooners with a few families.You can organise diving and snorkeling though them (but to be fair you can do it that through almost any person who lives in the area)Matamwe is a quiet village with just a few hotels beach is endless, the reef is swimmable to from the shore but many people opt to walk to it at low tide - if you do wear sturdy flip flops otherwise the sea urchins ... Hurt!

We would like to thank Yan and all the staff for making our stay so wonderful. It is such a breath taking location and the Zanzibar Retreat is a wonderful place. The owner prides him self on providing a retreat from the world and understands the needs of he’s customers. The food is 5 star, I would recommend staying here just for that alone but there is so much more to it. Although there is not a lot to do the days flew by between breakfast, lunch, a snooze on the beach and dinner there is not much time for a lot else!

What a lovely place! I recommend this hotel if you are planning to visit zanzibar.The owner is friendly and always there to help, staffs are super nice. The room is clean and cozy. There is a swimming pool but the beach is just connected from the hotel so easy to access.Reasonable price and location is not bad as well. Basically there is no supermarket or any shop outside in this area so better to prepare well or you can get something when you go to downtown.I stayed for 5days, every day food was amazing! (I tried almost everything and all were fresh and good haha) Menu changes every day.And i had the best birthday in my life there. The staffs sang african songs and danced all together for me. I will never forget that evening. Experience this hotel if you wanna have beautiful memories.

Friendly owner. Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent service and great food in the outdoor restaurant with a view of the Indian Ocean. Right at the beach.

Nice accomodation and food

Wow, what a great place! The owner is Finnish, and his wife is from Tanzania. Super nice folks. Beautiful little resort. It feels more like sharing a home than staying at a hotel, but doesnt cross that ineffable line. The food was great! Felt totally comfortable eating ceviche, gazpacho, and everything was truly excellent. Every single thing that came from the kitchen was great. Total trust. This was the only place in Tanzania that understood eggs over medium and (mostly) got it right. Great, great, great. Oh yeah, the beach. Talcum sand, like Boracay. And goats. And awesome scuba. I want to go back to Tanzania for lots of reasons. Zanzibar is something of a side trip. Stone Town is interesting the way that lots of places are, but not worth a repeat visit. However, I think Id visit Zanzibar again just to stay at the Retreat for a few days, again. And again.

Cant recommend Zanzibar Retreat enough. The wonderful smell in the rooms, the flowers on the bed, the food in the restaurant and of course the paradise location. Just watch out for sea urchins if swimming in the ocean!
