An absolutely lovely hotel. Most of the rooms face an open courtyard with plants, trees, & swimming pool. The lattice woodwork & outside floors are beautiful. No elevator but someone will help you with your bags. The room was a nice hotel room with a good bed and lovely shower. Restaurant serves all 3 meals, breakfast was included in my rate. You can eat inside or out in the garden.
I attended a conference here and I dare say i loved this place immediately, well almost . I did find it unfortunate that the parking space is quite constrained but the experience afterwards made me put that behind me.The generous Porte cochere that greets you at the entrance. The warm lighting that blends with the warm tones of the reception. Then the courtyard with large trees shading the pool in the middle. The building is old, probably colonial architecture but its well kept. After a visual treat, believe me the good did not disappoint, being both mouthwatering and delicious.I recall the service as average, then again I was focused elsewhere. Someone whose actually slept there would be in a better position to comment on this, but overall it was a great experience.
Nice place, good food. Enjoyed the food. Not at all crowded on a weekday.
Very nice hotel, clean, froendly personnel and good breakfast
1. My pick up from airport was not done. Waited for nearly an hour.. Rang.. Somebody was sent.. No explanation or apology was given... 2. Room didnt have enough light.. Especially for those on business meetings and require to read and do some writing this is not amusing3. Meals overpriced
A great serene hotel located just adjacent to the city Centre. The place offers a great restaurant with special cuisine and all time rolling brewed coffee. Their conference facility are exceptional with available get away small rooms for quick meeting. One special things about this place is their food; amazing! Staff and management are good, handling customers and issues professionally! A place to be in Dar!
Nice hotel in the midst of a busy Street, good place to have business meetings..
We enjoyed our stay. The internet was decent and very stable. The pool and common areas were nice. The room felt a bit aged and not many staff members were wearing masks.
Nice and cool Hotel with good venue and facilities for meetings, rooms family Dinners and whatnot. One of the conducive place for gentle dinners and lunch.
Wonderful experience . Food was excellent
I would not recommend this hotel. Its such a beautiful hotel, I wish its beauty was accompanied with great service and cleanliness.
Its a nice place, with very friendly staff. Just the facilities are old and can do with an upgrade.
The rooms are always clean and tidy! Good welcome in the room with fruits on first day.Hats off to the chef and staff. Their tandoori chicken is amazing. Loved the place!
The staff and accommodations have been delightful and over the top with our experience and stay here. It has made our first trip to Tanzania a pleasant one.
We had been there for the dinner buffet which is now being offered every Saturday. The buffet had a good variety of Indian food with a live pav bhaji corner. Food was well presented and delicious. The ambience was also very relaxing and enjoyable. Overall had a nice and filling dinner and a good evening with family to remember. Will surely go there again.
It was nice experience, and the place is was a nice one.
The Protea Courtyard in Dar es Salaam oozes old fashioned colonial atmosphere - yet a lot of the residents are actual native Tanzanians and other Africans. The rooms are a bit smallish but comfortable. The inner courtyard with pool is very secluded and very pleasant indeed. The Indian restaurant on the premises is quite outstanding. Services are good including arranging for transportation and excursions and the like. Staff at reception very friendly.
Best Place to be for Accomodation, meals and hangout with friend. The old Hotel built in 1948 but well maintained. This is a place for Elites.
Very good hotel, it is old but very fancy stylish rooms and furniture,Nice service, small but clean swimming pool,Breakfast OK..Location is in the middle of city a lot of good restaurants and cafes are in 15min walking ...Worth to book 4 sure
Very nice hotel with a very friendly staff.Rooms are nice and clean, with good air conditioning and a free safe. The beds are good, but a bit hard.Food in the restaurant is geest. Lots of choice, from local, to European to Asian. Breakfast is served every morning in buffet style, with the same choices between local, European and Asian.
A small, neat and well-maintained old establishment. The effective communication between the front-office and the kitchen allows the chef to prepare meals that respond to the profile of its guests. The friendly general staff make the hotel welcoming.
Staff was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Breakfast buffet is well stocked with a visually appealing presentation. Chef came around to greet clients and inquire about their experience and satisfaction. Housekeeping very thorough and front desk staff extremely accommodating. Would not hesitate to return, in fact have already booked a return stay. The building itself is a nice mixture of architecture, wood, stone, greenery. Cozy pool and lounge area along with gym with cardio and weights.
The hotel is quiet, with many rooms opening onto an interior courtyard. The food is good quality with a wide range available at the breakfast buffet, and there is an evening buffet as well as a simpler bar menu. The fitness centre is quite small, but has a reasonable range of aerobic machines and resistance weights. The staff could not have been more helpful throughout my stay.
Decent hotel and decent location. Rooms are clean and well kept. Hotel does need a little makeover, but I guess some guests like the rustic environment.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Protea Hotel Dar es Salaam. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. Rooms were clean and had all amenities needed for the stay. We loved the atmosphere around the courtyard and overall had a fantastic time. We can recommend the Indian Meals on the menu - fantastic Indian chef there. The breakfast buffet also had more than enough choice to get the day started. Thumbs up, we will stay again for sure.
Hotel was beautiful and the staff were very accommodating. Best place to stay of youre in Dar Es Salaam.
Staff and service are really top notch but the structures can use some upgrades.
Very classic hotel that gives a feeling of being in an old colonial building with all the comfort of a modern hotel. The staff are well trained and friendly, and the night manager does all he can to assist his guests. The breakfast spread is adequate with friendly breakfast staff. Parking is however limited and the rooms could be a little more comfortable but it is a good hotel.
Beautiful decor, colonial-style buildings but very well maintainedThe staff are noticeably dedicated, very helpful and organizedFood and drinks, all great. Definitely try the dinner buffet. Prices match the service
After a week in a posher central hotel, I spent 3 days resting at this wonderful little gem of a hotel. The location is good, near the centre of town. The staff were great, the room comfy (good shower, good bed). But what I enjoyed most was the atmosphere: this older building was renovated with much taste, keeping the older features and creating a truly delightful environment! I particularly enjoyed my many hours lounging by the pool, ensconced in all the greenery. If you are looking for a really neat hotel in Dar, dont hesitate, this is where you want to be!
Good place for meetings, workshops, or small conferences. They also have a decent selection of food. But the best part is the convenient location easily accessible from anywhere around town without much traffic. rooms are well kept and decent for short business trip
Not clean at all, can smell mold in the room. Basic elements like iron, were missing. Room was extremely dark (not enough lighting). I would give it a 2-star out of 5. For the quality and service, price was extremely high, food was average as well.
Beautiful setting. Quiet, clean, and wonderful staff. Food is great (chef, Shiv, made me a special meal when I got sick and was accommodating. The staff are friendly. I felt very safe and that my stuff was also safe. Very classy. Would stay there every time!
This is the third time I am coming to this hotel and the standard is still the same. The food is delicious and the breakfast buffet wonderful. The staff is very nice, smiling and does everything to make your stay a special one. This hotel has a character and a soul. Thanks to Dinish and all his team.
All negativeNo room service after midnightBad internetDated equipment in roomOnly plus is the friendly staff..... but that doesn’t mean much when u r expecting min infrastructureBad bad Marriott, totally disappointed!
This hotel is fantastic. A treat to stay at by far. Incredible staff memebers that make you feel at peace and at home. An incredible food selection from a chef that cares. An ambience that radiates positive energy through the air and a well maintained grounds that leaves you satisfied from a long day of seeing the city. Not to mention fast wifi that you can count on. I adore this place and you will too.
The food. The service. Excellent! Spent the day working and the birds chirping added a very welcome background to my e-meetings.
Its amazing place, various drinks ( soft and hard drinks)are available at cheap prices. you can listen or dance various songs.your security is ensured. both natives and guests will enjoy being here.
This hotel looks good but unfortunately I’ve had a terrible experience here. Firstly, there was something wrong with the door lock and we had to go all the way to back to replace the key.The room felt like it was shut for long and it had that stench. The bathroom is as big as a 1BHK which is not really necessary as the room was too compact. I stayed in a 2 pax room which had 1 laundry bag and when asked for the second one at around 7am, they said their housekeeping services open up I guess at 8 or so which was really surprising. Kinda upset with the fact that it’s a Marriott property.Disappointed!
The Protea Courtyard is an oasis in the busy, crowded Dar es Salaam, TZ. The actual courtyard is beautiful, peaceful, and is perfect for a swim, breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and quiet time at the hotel. The dinner menu at the restaurant has a large variety and no matter the cuisine: Indian, Tanzanian, Continental - the food is fresh, wholesome, and well-prepared. Very good chef and kitchen staff. Everything is made to order - fresh, so you will wait for your meal (pretty much all over Dar). What makes the Protea Courtyard such a delight, is the staff! From the bellmen, to the front desk, all wait staff, housekeeping staff - everyone is gracious, friendly, goes out of their way to accommodate your every wish. Always a treat to stay at The Courtyard when in Dar.
This is a good hotel with lots of different restaurants. I love their cafe with desserts. Unfortunately they need to build more parking space. You sometimes have to go and park your car in areas with terrible space where it is not safe. For such a big hotel they need to step that up. I also like the security at the gate. It is makes you feel good in this day and age. One thing I suggest is a place for children to play and enjoy as well as baby sitting servicesso adults can get grown up time. This is a good hotel with lots of different restaurants. My favorite stay.. Rooms are amazing and is situated right beside the police station and also its situated in middle of every other place or restaurant you would like to go. Rooms are amazing and place in funtastic. Food is amazing.
Great caring Manager who goes out of his way to ensure guests satisfaction and makes them feel like home with excellent services with a smile. Thank you and will definitely return back on my visit again
The service was very slow even though there was almost noone there. Drinks took quite a long time also, and one of the beers was actually warm.I got the beef stew from their local dishes page and it was pretty good albeit small, and came with some really tasty local collared greens which were the best part of the meal. The rice was dry, so I wish I had asked for their mashed maize (the other side option). My friend had their fried chicken which wasnt anything to write home about. They did however take AMEX which is great if you have a branded Marriot AMEX!
The hotel is a beautiful setting. The rooms were very nice. However, We didnt pre-order dinner ànd it took nearly an hour and a half to receive our order.. The food was good but the service was just too slow.
This place is just tired; the room had a strong musty smell, the grout in the bathrooms were dingy, the Tansanian food was indistinguishable from food you could get anywhere, the common areas were nice but a little tired looking. It was probably a much nicer place in its day, but it could really stand a rehab now. The bed was comfortable enough, and for a single nights stay before continuing to Nairobi it was fine. But if I were to come this way again Id probably look for better options.
This is a very beautiful facility with history of great leaders that ever spent here. I felt myself special and in the league of African leaders like Jomo Kenyatta, Kwame Nkurumah among others. I enjoyed their hospitality and wonderful meals.
Classy old style hotel. Service, food, are wonderful. Ambiance of the place is great, with period furniture, stained glass lamps, colonial building. Wifi is a little unreliable during my stay, but it works in the lobby.
My husband and I had a lovely time staying at the Protea Courtyard in Dar. It is a happy balance between close to things and not in the middle of it all. Rooms are nice with AC, and the decor is lovely. The attached restaurant is convenient and serves a happy variety of foods. The pool is on the small side, but not a big deal for us.
Charming, quaint, historical. Its in a great part of town - as close as youll get to the city center, without any chaos. The Seaview area is quiet, safe, and easily accessible. The restaurant is among the best in the city thanks to a 5star head chef. Ive been living in Dar for many years, Protea is probably the best kept secret for hotels. Even if you dont stay here, check it out.
Was good but parking is a problem make sure you get enough parking but is good thanks good break fast
My sister and I had a wonderful stay at Protea Hotel Courtyard! The hotel is located in a quiet area of the vibrant city of Dar Es Salaam. We were able to have a rest while enjoying the hotel facilities such as the luxurious outdoor pool and the gym. Our rooms were very clean and well decorated! Moreover, the hotel staff did everything to make our stay enjoyable. They opened the hotel restaurant in advance for us to enjoy the buffet breakfast the day we were leaving the hotel. We were able to enjoy the breakfast and leave the hotel on time to catch the boat to Zanzibar at the ferry terminal. We recommend this hotel to every traveler who is looking for quietness, comfort, and a beautiful natural setting. Visit my Instagram (kelledstyle) for more pictures ;-)
Air conditioning unit was under-rated and placed so that it cooled the area in front of the bathroom door and no effect on bed and desk area. Air conditioning is essential because of hot and humid climate and need to keep windows closed to prevent malaria mosquitoes entering. The room was small.Apart from this the bed was comfortable, food and service were excellent.
Close to Mational museum and nice restaurants with views of ocean. Friendly, helpful staff. Concierge helped us get a sim card and airtime. Rooms can be on the small side unless you ask for something larger. Great pool area with tables surrounding for relaxation. Excellent breakfast buffet! Also within walking distance of two great coffee shops.
Excellent buffet, alot of varieties in the menu, excellent customer service also..The thing i loved most is the head chef coming to every table and asking how you liked the food or it needs improvement, excellent!
I was there for a conference. And I must say it went pretty well. The tea breaks were awesome, lunch too.Conference room had the necessary facilities needed ie projectors, multiplugs, Different connection cables that could fit any computer. Its a good for conferences definately ,💪
Cool place. The services are on time, charming waiters. If you need a place to just relax or swim may be, Protea Courtyard is one of the very few places of such.Wireless connections is for residents only.
It was a very very nice experience in dar es salaam, this hôtel is just perfect. Me and my girl friend have a chance to travel around the world and we are ok to say we never have that Kind of service. Room Staff are very pro and discret, regarding the restaurant it is incredible, very very professionnal and also they was very friendly. Now if we speak about food we can classified this restaurant in excellent gastronomic food chiefs are very talented. Indian tanzanian european all the Best. For sûre we will come back.So do not hesitate to book at protea hôtel.
I had a good time at the hotel. The staff were friendly too
Close to the port! Good place to spend the night before go to Zanzibar
Pleasant old building, nicely renovated with a relaxing courtyard garden and plunge pool. Rooms well-presented and everything worked fine, but a bit dark inside. Food average - I preferred to eat out.
The hotel is cool but his accountant/floor manager (an Indian guy) missed some proffesionalism. My wife visited me since I arrived I wasnt feeling well...so him, saw us passing reception and instead of calling me and telling me that I am not allowed to go in the room with a guest he was like spying on me. I saw him coming out if his desk and like looking where I was going and went on booking without letting me know. on check out I asked why couldnt they just tell me? Paying was not an issue but they treated me with less importance. And he was busy and didnt care listening to me at all. worst experience in this hotel.
Classy surroundings, fittingly satisfied by excellent indian and italian food. Service tends to fluctuate, but the arrival of the food will fulfill your taste buds, and more. Quite reasonably priced, and some may be surprised to hear the cost of this restaurant in a hotel offers better food than several restaurant in the city centre with lesser luxuries and higher costs. A restaurant that deserves more attendance.

It a very nice hotel the service is good, its located near the ocean so the weath there is not hot as the the rest of dar. There room are clean and also the surrounding environment is amazinging. Not only that but also the foot there is great and there different kinds of drinks.
Beautiful decor, kind of English feel. Great staff and meals....now one issue... Night staff sleeping on duty .. Had to wake her up on my morn checkout...very funny !
Had a good stay here for four nights. I enjoyed most the responsiveness of staff and the surprisingly wide options for room service. I did not like that the hotel does not have good outside views and I found the bathroom too small.
Quiet place to have a rest at, popular to foreign tourists, they have sharp staffs, and plenty of deserts options. They have small open space, swimming pool and bedrooms.Otherwise, its a great place.
Located near the city center. Limited space
This is a quaint quiet hotel with good service. It could use a renovation though as the decor is dated and the furnishings show their ages. The rooms are on the small side.
These guys were very very good at what they do. Excellent room, staff courteous and eager to serve. They are protective of their guests, and the restaurant and bar are fabulous.
Nice little cosy hotel with a bit of history. Useful for business meetings / conference. Food is very good
Terrible. Absolutely Terrible.Worst hotel I have stayed in last decade !Windows open to other wi dows .. whoever opens first has the right of view ... the beds are really narrow and I got a twin room instead of double. In the middle of the night, one bed support collapsed. The front office staff advised that I should go to sleep as nothing could be done now. How helpful !!??
We enjoyed our stay and appreciate the calmness of the resort central pool & garden. Also food is excellent and service provided by very friendly staff.
Place was centrally located. Facilities were excellent and staff was super friendly and courteous. We have already booked this hotel for our two additional upcoming stays. Would highly recommend!!
What a place , quite and so romantic , food is amazing , prices are reasonable . please try once and u wont regret .I tried and I never regretted the view, food and the music
1. Great view2. Comforting place3. Relaxed conference rooms4. Delicious cook ( food)5. Good customer care
Food is good...
The bed was comfy, the room and toilet was super clean.. great buffet breakfast.. they are so helpful, my flight was cancelled,so I had some things to freeze, they helped me to freeze..
Staff was great but the room is dark, poor lighting, lacks privacy, was noisy at night, bed uncomfortable, mattress pad slides under the sheets. Bathroom Difficult to move around, toilet behind the door
Nice and welcoming staff. On the food, I wish all places I go had the food that you make. I love the place
1st impression was really bad as room was not maintained properly but Suman hotel manager was very very good changed my room next day and the room given to me was good Food was fantastic if any one likes Indian food it was fantastic Hospitality was good only issue was hotel maintenance.
The location, the room, the nice garden and pool, the breakfast, all was perfect.
I was kicked out of the pool for making noise for guests whereas I was swimming alone,no diving and I am an experienced swimming coach. This was while white guests sat around the court yard chatting. The worst experience in my life. Sadly, the manager who said this denied the incident when I approached him
Great value for money at a very cosy property. The breakfast is well above par and the staff were extremely helpful throughout my stay.
Great view, Nice food and amazing place.. I love the food there and they have good services
Good little transit place to stay. Gladys (manager?) is great. She knows how to run a business. Arnold is very helpful, and the staff as a whole are great and caring. Thank you.
This hotel is a true hidden jem. It has one of the best staff who are friendly and helpful. Furthermore, they have one of the best buffets in the city.
