This place is about the history of Tanzania before western colonization. The history of the arrival of Islam to Tanzania in about the 13th century.Although not as much information is available about the site as one would like, it is still a worthwhile visit.

Bagamoto historical site....worth a visit...Kaole ruins is a small town and archaeological site located three miles east of Bagamoyo . The area contains old stone ruins dating to a period between the 13th century and the 16th century. The ruins date back to the 13th century and consist of two mosques one of 13th century and ither of 15th century around 22 tombs. The tombs at Kaole were built from coral stones with stone pillars that marked some of the tombs. According to local tradition, some of the tombs are the graves of local rulers..one of the grave is believed to be the descendants of the Sheikh Ali jumaan arguably the most well known Sheikh along the coast.Other tomb is for girl called shariffa who had karma power and knowledgeableAlso theres lovers tomb who were burried together

Im not a big fan of using guides usually, but here you definitely need it as explanation boards are scarce. The guides are trying hard, but additional questions are a bit of a problem though. Its a wonderful site with great history and its really tried to have it arranged (yet falling apart here and there). Entrance fee for foreigners (20000tsh) and EA residents (10000tsh) is relatively high.

Kaole is a small town and an archaeological site in Tanzania, located three miles east of Bagamoyo, on the Indian Ocean coast. The Kaole Ruins, dating back to a period between the 13th century and the 16th century, are what remains of an ancientmuslim Shirazi settlement. The archaeological site has two mosques and 30 tombs. One of the buildings is the most ancient known mosque in East Africa. Tombs are built withcoral rag, with columns; according to oral history, the diwanis are buried there, i.e., the local sultans, descendants of Ali Muhamad al-Hatim al-Barawi. A small museum has been established, where some artifacts are exposed that were found in the ruins. Some of these artifacts areChinese and thus provide evidence of ancient commercial relationships between the swahili/shirazi civilization and the Far East.
