Amazingly organized 4 day mt Meru climbWe decided that we wanted to climb Mt Meru a day before we left for the hike. We called Rupia Adventures around 7PM, and within an hour some employees came to our hostel to walk us through the itinerary and check whether we had sufficient gear/clothes to do the summit. We obviously didn’t, as we had not packed a wintersports jacket and -pants for our trip to Tanzania. Thankfully, we could borrow all of this including a headlamp, gloves and an additional small backpack without extra costs, except for the sleeping bags which we had to rent. So, even though we had just decided that we wanted to do this, we were ready to go within a couple of hours. The next morning we were picked up right on time, to drive to mountain.Everything on the mountain was arranged perfectly as well. The mountain lodges were comfortable places to sleep and to spend the evening, although everybody stays at the same place, so there’s no difference between companies. Our guide, Emanuell, was knowledgeable about the surroundings, the animals and did not mind giving us some swahili classes. The rest of the team was friendly too. Lastly, we got to give a shoutout to Omari, the cook. He prepared amazing tasteful and healthy foods, usually a vegetable soup, followed by a varied main course and topped off by a plethora of fruits (see picture). Even though my partner and I eat fair portions, we never finished it all. Everyday whilst hiking we were already looking forward to dinner, that says it all. Then some information about the climb itself. The hikes were great, all days, except for the summit day were very green, which made it fun to walk through. These foresty walks enabled us to see some animals. We saw a couple giraffes, buffalos, antilopes, a lot of babboons, a chameleon and much more. The lookout for those animals was a pleasant addition to the hiking itself. Only the last climb to the summit was mostly rocky without vegetation. Climbing to the top, which was difficult at times, was rewarding and when we finally made it, it waa a great feeling. All in all, a great climbing experience organised by a great company.
