Great hostel that covers all needs. Jenny cooks excellent dinner and after a long day of work you can relax in the nice garden. The beds were super comfy and sharing the room with others wasnt an issue. We mostly even had hot water and rarely power outages. Please note that such things are normal in countries as these, as well as the occasional rat or cockroach. TIA! I enjoyed my stay there, Gasper was very kind and helpful. I removed one star because the bathrooms could have been cleaner. But other than that, Ujamaa Hostel is the place to stay in Arusha! Quiet neighbourhood, public transport, mall with a cinema, grocery store and restaurants is less than 10 minutes walking distance away. :)

Having stayed at over 100 hostels and guest houses and Ujamaa is one of the best. While you may find others with fancier accommodations and swimming pools, you will be hard pressed to find one that is in the business of helping others. Could not recommend more highly!

THIS PLACE IS INFESTED WITH RATS. We could not beleive our stay at Ujamma hostel, the place is falling apart and the owner has pretty much zero care for the well being of his guests. When we checked in we were shown to a room with bunk beds, we explained that we booked and paid extra for a a private room with a private bathroom. Gasper (the hostel owner) explained that there was already someone in the room and they had extended their stay so we could not have it. We later found out that the couple had not extended their stay unexpectedly, and that in fact he had triple booked the only private room with three couples paying extra for this room but only one couple actually having it. The first night we heard something under the bunk bed we had assumed it was mouse and we moved to the top bunk, we then felt something moving in the mattress of the top bunk and at that point left the room to try to sleep on the broken couches in the common room. There is no security and no one at the front desk so we had to wait until 6am when the cook woke up to inform her of the mice (which we later learned from the owner and other hostel guest were actually many many rats that had infested the entire hostel). They laid poison for the rats over the next few days and each morning there would be several dead rats lying around the different rooms in the hostel. We stayed 6 long awful nights and even on our last day we were still hearing rats running around. The water was off one morning which meant that we all went to our volunteer placements unbathed. There were two power outages both lasting for several hours. There was a massive cockroach that crawled out of the kitchen while we ate our very basic dinner (rice and beans or rice and chicken for every meal). The showers were covered in mold and the place was in such bad shape we were surprised when something was working and not broken. The owner Gasper is a fairly consistent liar and was rarely available to speak with about the issues that were happening in the hostel. Several people who were staying there including myself and my husband found other accommodations in Arusha that were 100x cleaner and more professional at half the price. Arusha is a beautiful city and this place should not be how you experience it.

WARNING! DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOSTEL! Not only did my roommate and good friend get bed bugs bites all over both hands and arms the very first night but Gasper, one of the owners of the hostel, is a liar and a thief. He didnt have change for 50 euros (red flag number 1) and promised that he would give me the difference when I returned from safari. I stupidly gave him the benefit of the doubt. Upon return he still didnt have change and then further promised to wire me the money when I arrived in Moshi. I never heard from him again. If you value your health and your money, PLEASE DO NOT STAY HERE! Please see my Trip Advisor review for pics of the bed bugs.
