Good market in the city of Stone Town. Fruits, vegetables, meat and even fish auctions. Streets and streets full of merchandise where the species take on an important nuance since the island is one of the largest exporters of these delicacies (a good opportunity to take a souvenir package). If you have no intention of buying, you can go through it in 15/20 min. If you are good at haggling, this is a good place to shop.
I was wandering the alleys, when I bumped into this market, even though I knew that I had to visit it, I had no idea I was going on that direction, as I walk closer and closer, a veeeery distinctive smell was coming out of the fish section, lot of loud voices too. I walk straight in, spectacular experience!! I could witness the auctions, Hammer heads, other sharks, Big Marleys, giant Manta rays and heaps of other species of fish, the men negotiating the prices, chaos, very dirty, just like you see in documentaries, I went for lunch after and returned to it once again.IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!! loved it so much!! they seem to be doing the same process for centuries. That market is extraordinary to wander around. I recommend to do it alone and then maybe do it with a guide for better context.I met a local guide nearby by accident, he gave me the tour then, he took me to the old slave market museum, then back to the market, where we went behind the scenes, sooo many hidden alley ways, I could see, where they butcher the chickens, where all market workers eat in what it seems to be communal kitchens, etc

One can experience seeing local as well as foreign vegetables, and so much more
Oldest market in Zanzibar, a historical place. The sell everything, from fruits, vegetables, spices, cooking ingredients, meat, sea food to clothes and other accessories for reasonable prices. Its quite enjoyable, different types of people from different races come to see the old market, it is a tourist attraction site
Darajani Market is a hive of activity, with everything from spices, fresh fish, slabs of meat and huge baskets full of live chickens to sandals, plastic buckets and mobile phones, all set out in a series of covered halls and overflowing into the surrounding streets. If youre buying food, come in the morning when stuff is fresh, although its much busier then. For a slightly less crowded and chaotic experience come in the afternoon.
Interesting market, they sell you spices that actually dont grow on Zanzibar. Bargain is a must.
Loved it,nice place for spices and vegetables.
It was intereating but also quite raw in the fish and meat sections... strong smells and un refrigerated storage... once into the veg and apice sections its better but still very hot and the marketeers are blatantly over priced to tourists. Bought a small spice boat in the end and it was intereating to talk through them.
Very nice I have went spice community shop and my friends to make shopping is good shops there are very friendly people
The market has more than you could imagine. In addition to food, vendors sell clothes, electronics, souvenirs, and much more. If you are interested to buy Zanzibar spices, note that some vendors proposed all kind of fancy packs that you won’t find elsewhere. Visit my Instagram (kelledstyle) for more pictures and my blog for more info :)
Interesting, very crowded market. You should talk to people, they are very open. But don’t take photos of people, because police is monitoring the situation. No problem, if there are no faces of people on the taken photo. Have been checked several times. And no problems with normal touristic photos of the market.
You can buy different types of spices made in zanzibar
Nice for local products but too much expensive
Here you will find everything on the main market from local growers to imports at good prices 👏👏👏 However, if you want a significant discount💵, take the baby with you👌
This place is wild. Tons of spices, tons of fruit, prices are very consistent throughout (but you should shop around a bit). It is hot and sticky inside, but never claustrophobic. People will hawk goods as you go through, but that is literally their job so you should expect it. Prices are better inside than outside, so do go through the stalls. There are ATMs on the east/street side of the building, so just go out near where the cars park if you need cash (at last check these were not on Google Maps). Buy a bag for 500 TSH and stock up. Covid situation is very bad - but it is all over the island anyway, so no worse here than any place else except a resort.
Mix of color, smell, and aggressive sellers .are me feel home where I was born. I dont miss it. Just a good flashback and childhood memories.
Great place to pick up spices from Zanzibar. Watch out as the locals can spot a foreigner a mile away and will hike up prices. We paid about 4000 shilling a bag but I think we could have haggled it down to 2000. Also keep your belongs close as pickpocketed would be easy in a place like this. One other thing worth mentioning is that there is a lot of raw meat around so it smells very fishy.
Cashew nuts are a must buy at this market, about 20k shillings=R130/kg is the going rate. Tons of flies, smells by the meat section, so I dont think any South African can take it....
Cool market to visit and generally just hang out and watch the world go by.The produce is varied and fresh. I mean all sorts. Youve got to know your prices though! The food section (food court if you like) is great. Just jump in with the locals and dont you worry about it!
Coffee is very good. love the iced Cappuccino (6.5k) pricey but ok for the flavor. Food is also good. Go to the rooftop to eat or drink, is a beautiful place. Only thing is that if you order something to eat, you must go to take your plate downstairs and with it yourself to the rooftop. At that price they can make an effort on that.
The fish market probably among the smelliest in the world. Apart from that you have a choice of fruits, veggies and spices all year round. It is a nice colourful market. A place for the pride of your eyes definitely 👍.
This was an experience well worth having. It is a lovely local market with some well priced and very nice merchandise. The stall owners are friendly and maybe a little too pushy, but always willing to chat and negotiate
We went on a tour of how spices are grown. Very educationalAfter we were able to purchase some spices like nutmeg, clove and cinnamon bark. Also some organic perfume and soap made locally
I went on a walking tour on a Sunday & it was great.Apparently Sundays are the busiest & most popular time to go.The market was very busy & vibey with hundreds of people buying & selling goods. They have a huge spice market section and plenty other things to see.Give it a go, youve nothing to loose, just a lot of sensory overload, but thats what markets are all about.Kind regardsFerdie Liebenberg
I went to the market to buy fresh fish (red snapper) and octopus. Red snapper is quite rare during this period of the year, which means that it is a bit expensive. Octopus was quite affordable. There are very many food stuff, from veggies, fruits to meat without forgetting spices which Zanzibar is famous for.
Wow what a bustling market! The freeway for the senses is almost overwhelming as time of vegetables, beef, and fish are sold everyday, all day. Everything we got here was fresh and tasted great when we cooked it for lunch. Even the rubbish bins outside were interesting, though a bit disgusting and smelly. A must see if youre in Stone Town.
Its a good place to walk and see different things and understanding the local history of the city and its people. There are many souvenir shops in the area where you can find the best handcrafted, spices and other local items.
Alive! That is all I can say. When I was little it was a busy place, it is busier now because there are more people and more shops. But in reality the place has not changed for over 40 years! It is lovely to see people interacting and to be able to interact with the merchants as you get things you need.
Excellent and must do as part of your tour of stone town. Spices and fruit at great prices. The hawkers that follow u can be a bit annoying. Good souvenirs. Try the fish market but u need a strong nose...still a good experience. Dont b afraid to bargain before buying
The food is always fresh, they serve local zanzibari dishes...(I love the seafood❤).the place is in a good location easy to get to and well known and many tourist have their meals there and the prices are affordable.
Its a nice place as you can get your needs, just municipal needs to make it clean especially inside the market on rain seasons. The market should be neatly organized and also cleaned everyday.
Didnt actually had time to stay for long, but it seemed to be and actually is one among the markets at Zanzibar that have most of goods that are used in homes for food purposes and probably at affordable prices at very good standards from what i saw by far.
Zanzibars main market is a hive of activity, with everything – from spices, fresh fish, slabs of meat and huge baskets full of live chickens to sandals, plastic buckets and mobile phones – all set out in a series of covered halls and overflowing into the surrounding streets. If youre buying food, come in the morning when stuff is fresh, although its much busier then. For a slightly less crowded and chaotic experience come in the afternoon.
Is the main market in stown town. You can get different kinds of fruit, spices, fish, meat and other products that are available in Zanzibar. The peoples of Zanziber are friendly and charming. At the fish, meat and chicken section are little bit smelling. Most of the products selling in Zanzibar are fresh.
This is where locals go to shop ... for just about anything. Food, yes, but also clothing, shoes, jackets, and household goods. Be brave and venture over. Very few people will disturb you, as it isnt likely to contain too many papasi hunting for tourists.
This is such an exotic place to me! Maybe just a souq or a market to many locals but I found the aroma of spices welcoming me first! In here you can buy spices, fruits & vegetables, all in abundance. I remember I bought nearly 3 Kg of different spices, at the price I negotiated & I was told from before by a Tanzanian friend of mine. I highly recommend you to come here & make a good bargain. Just the regular crowd precautions to where you keep your phone & wallet.
A good place to buy fruits and clothes as well. No typical traditional clothes though. If you need cultural clothes, this is not a place youd wanna go.
Its such a lovely place to be but not when its raining. You will find everything fruits and vegetable , meat and fish, praws and local fish. When in Zanzibar you must visit this lovely place.
Really authentic market with all kinds of things to see or just take photos of the dead fish catches of the day. Sad to see that they also sell sharks and Tunas and huge stingrays there though. Really good if you want to buy spices oils or coffee. You really should try to half the price of what they tell you in the first place, and then its probably still overpriced.
The main market in Stone Town is an essential fixture for the town’s residents but a sensory bonanza for the rest of us. Meat, fish, spices, vegetables and other staples are sold at this colorful, photogenic market. Though it is often included in a city tour, it is an easy (and free!) place to explore on your own.
Popular market among tourists for spice and herbs. It is a typical vegetable market but cleanly maintained. Go through the nooks to find the shell shops. If you want to buy sea shell this place can be cheap. DOnt buy shell in beaches as they charge you higher. Dont forget to bargain to get the best price. They sometime drop below 1/3rd the price.
A great market! This is where I shop for my fruits and vegetables, spices and herbs. Everything is always fresh. Tropical fruits are available depending on the season. If you are looking for cinnamon powder, Chilli powder, turmeric, nutmeg then you can find that all here too. Herbs such as rosemary, coriander etc is also available. The fish market is smelly just so you know.
Very busy place crowded especially in the afternoon with a variety of goods from fish, groceries to clothes and electronics at cheaper price(bargaining is allowed). The locals are friendly but since its a conservative place decent clothing is advised
The most historic market in zanzibar island, selling a lot things that i wont finish mentioning but inshort everything that you need to eat, cook, drink, read and use. Its a place where i dont think there a lot of things lacking😉
It seems not too touristy but the typical tourist bags with spices do require serious negotiations and quality knowledge of the products which you intend to buy
Very many shops, and allot to buy. Cheap... Always best to have a local person with you, to help you and guide you on all markeds in Africa. I had the best taxi driver to help me around the marked with car😁 its always safest and best. One tip, never have your phone or money in your pocket, have your phone and wallet always in your hand. Pocket thiefs
Very nice
Nice place to visit. Dont expect a European market. Its a rustic market, very traditional, very África!!! If you are respecfull, the people its very nice and friendly. Prices are very cheap. Get some amazing spices!!!!
