Surprised there arent more ice cream spots around Nungwi, but this is a great place for icecream - we had 3 scoops (mango, passion fruit and lime) in a cup for US$5. From the beach youll need to walk past the bar and head towards the back to get to the icecream bar. We enjoyed the icecream at a table and watched the sunset.
Terrible pizza, terrible salad, terrible calamari. The price and taste - omg it is awful...The best what I ordered was colaNot recommended at all 🤮rip off tourists - the price absolutely does not correspond to either quality or tasteI don’t care about other tourists - your kitchen is awful. It is better to but street food on the market
We went up to get a drink for a nearby sunset tour when the lady asked us to leave in a very rude and condescending attitude without any explanation or asking about the reason we were there. I am not sure if she was having a bad day or this is the level of customer service at this place but no respected place would tolerate the way she treats customers or potential customers.
I had the opportunity to try this restaurant twice. First time I had an original Italian sandwich second time i had lobster and my friend got a pizza . I really enjoyed it. I recommend to test mama mia s food.
The most popular place in Nungwi at night. Great to see people and to have drinks. Food and prices not so good. Go with pizza or something simple, dont order seafood here.EDIT in response to owner:I had a bad experience with your stuffed calamari, it was bad I couldnt finish it (there are multiple people complaining about this dish in your reviews, I didnt know when I ordered). The pizza was ok. Drinks were good, service fast, I came back for gelatto next day, it was great. Hope this is helpful to you as an owner.
Hands down they have an amazing tiramisu, you should try it out. as vegetarian there are not too many options but the pizza magarita is pretty good! also the staff is very nice and friendly.
The pizza and tiramisu were not bad. I would not recommend this place because of its good food, but the ice cream is great and obviously its location, right at the beach
To be honest, very average pasta (octopus spaghetti and seafood pasta) - especially for an Italian owned restaurant. The seafood part was good, its the pasta itself which didnt taste great/home-made, and the tomato sauce of the seafood pasta was unspectacular. Would not return again for the food unfortunately. A missed opportunity to create amazing Italian dishes with fresh seafood..
Good pizza with seafood and lime ice cream but local food is not very good. Place has nice location, especially for sunset.
Eat Italian here: these guys ARE Italian. Great pizza! Prime location & gelato proper gelato! (If you want seafood, better prices and execution elsewhere in my opinion.)
View and gelato are lovely. The other food however.. I have tried their lobster two times because its convenient to choose how many grammes you want, and they will include stated amount in the bill. But the lobster itself wasnt prepared nicely. Both times it had a taste of those grayish intestines lying around. Im not sure that is a proper way to prepare such dish.Their pizza dough was undercooked and cappuccino was just terrible. The bitterest I have ever tried in my life.So if you want to grab a glass of juice or gelato and enjoy the view, this is a place.
Great food, drink and service. Owner and staff are all very friendly.Pizza is very good!
Really nice food. We ate here multiple times. Had pasta, burger, parmigiano, coffee and everything tasted good. Big plus is the location right on the seaside, best for watching sunset.
Unfortunately, everyone advised to me this restaurant- chicken soup was tasty- pizza is very tasty- salat is tastyBut:- lobster was awful- tuna was awful- penne with octopus was awfulWater wasn’t friendly and first gave as an ice cream and only than after 40 minutes main dishes. Also forgot about prowns in our order. There are many people here and the view is beautiful, but the dishes are not tasty.Disappointed.
Gelato was excellent, view and area is excellent.Food was quick but wasnt as tasty and fresh as we were hoping for
Absolutely enjoyed the authentic Italian espresso, the wood fire pizza and the gelato was a great hit with the children. The view of the sea was lovely and the staff were friendly. Looking forward to going again.
Finding delicious food in Nungwi is difficult. So if you want a safe bet, go & try their pizzas. In the evening they had a live band there who created a nice atmosphere. Also, their wifi connection was strong & stable.
Perfection. We got the Nutella coconut gelato and it was so good. I have not had gelato like that for too long. They servers were all friendly and kind. We got a margarita pizza and we were perfectly satisfied as we sat at the perfect spot for beach views and people watching.
OK, coming to the best and the most memorable part of my Zanzibar trip; Mama Mia and Nungwi Beach itself! I was expecting this restaurant to be expensive as hell but no -prices are so modest, I may even say its cheaper than many restaurants within Zanzibar and Dar Es Salaam. Its crowded but relatively large so you always find a seat without the need of a reservation or waiting in a que for a table. Speaking of food, Ive read some reviews about how oily and how unhealty these snacks are but cmon people, youre coming to the far side of the world and need to indulge yourself a bit, not complain about things and enjoy delicious food! For my part I loved every bit of them -even though being a health and fitness obsessed person. Having some bites and drinks, then jumping into the sea, becoming numb because of the heat and having a bit siesta on the couches, then repeating the cycle is what youll get here. Wish my whole life goes on like this. =) If youre reading this, enjoy your every moment there!
If you went to Nungwi and didnt go to this place you better do it now.Wonderful food options, cheap and clean. Order 2kg of lobsters and you wont regret it.Special kudos to the team - they are the best.
The pizza was not really goodThe ingredients very poor and taste was not as expected. Not italian style for sure! But the ice creams are very good
Good Italian restaurant in Nungwi with phenomenal views.Dishes are rather small and price is higher than other restaurants. We got served quickly. Make sure to bring cash (Tanzanian Shilling) since you pay a premium if you pay in USD.Views are definitely worth the visit. In the evening, there are tables set up on the adjacent beach for a nice sunset dinner.
The location and views from this restaurant are very good. The menu is extensive but I found my pasta dish not great. I got pasta with crab meat since I was at the ocean. The crab meat turned out to be an entire crab sitting in my dish. I could get over that except there was very little meat and one claw (my favourite) was missing. The tomato sauce wasnt good (very bitter) which is surprising since Italians are usually good at this. Also I ordered a coffee there at 10am and the coffee machine wasnt on so I was told no coffee.
If youre in nungwi and looking for a place to eat or have a drink, come here! The view is amazing and is a super chill place. The food is really good with an Italian type menu. The focaccia was really good. I also had the crab pasta and it was good but the only reason I give the place a one star less is because whilst the crab pasta was good (I actually happened to really like the tomato based sauce) it was served with the shell (which looked really cool!) And was so difficult to tackle even with the crab gadget thing.
The pizza is not good but expensive. I can eat better foods in my country but the ice cream is fantastic. Especially vanille and passion fruit
Nice tiramisu but drinks are more expensive than other places bearby that are just as nice. however for dessert it has good options
The view to the sea and seeing the sunset was great, but it was very expensive. Also the pizza (diabolo) was very bad. The salami gave the pizza a sour taste and the rest of it was not good either.
Really nice place with some really good (a bit small) panna cotta and a real Italian espresso. The staff was super friendly
The Tuna fish and lobster 🦞 were very overcooked. The sauces all tasted like they were out-dated. Its a 2.5 for me.
Incredible focaccia !The owner and the team are amazing. the setting facing the sea is incredible
Best gelato like(ish) in Italy !We had one marinara pizza and one octopus salad. The salad was tasty, the pizza quite good a bit salty though.Good espresso.Very good service and staff.
I tried their restaurant twice and beyond poor food! Ginger tea was tea bag with boiled water and not fresh ginger tea.Vegetable soup was very salty boiled water with few veggies cut in....so not a broth etc. It came with plain white bread slice not garlic bread or something that compliments soups.Cappuccino was out of small vending machine terrible taste. Gelato ice cream was nothing close to the taste in Europe.
Great ice cream, almost the only place that has so many ice cream flavors and really good quality
Authentic Italian Gelato Ice cream!! Good variety. Enjoyed
Great pizza, possibly the best in Nungwi
Barely any vegan option! I hate pasta with tomato sauce and it had no taste. However the ice cream was decent.
Went twice. Both times very inconsistent. Given its Italian run, the pizzas werent up to a good standard. More like ready made pizza bases with some fresh toppings. Had to return a pasta ragu which seems to have been cooked in a seafood pan as it tasted more like fish than bolognese. Overall, a forgettable experience.
Great place for a bland tasting pizza, that is no different from the one you get frozen in a supermarket back home. Mama mia has a proper pizza oven and its such a shame that pizza for this price can be so bad. Its great that they accept cards, but the way they do it is a rip off - prices from shillings are converted to dollars at the rate of 2000 and then 8% tax is added. That makes your bill 24% bigger. I would say avoid this place all together, but if you still come - come with cash and get ice cream ☺️
I love the pasta. Simple yet tasty. We tried the pizza too and the pizza sauce is natural tasting tomatoes. The location is perfectly by the beach.
Food is brought unusually fast.We ordered lobster spaghetti and penne with octopus. The former was excellent but the latter wasnt good.Juice is watery because its cheap, its not a fresh juice, be aware. We got a wrong bill... It was for another table. If you finished and asked for a bill itll take a lot if time for them to care and bring one.Usually they call a waiter who served your table to bring a check.
Such a lovely restaurant right on the beach. Friendly and hospitable owner, rest of staff were swift in service. Pizzas were absolutely delicious and well priced. The desserts are tasty too! Would definitely recommend.
Nice place with premium prices and average food.We have expected some very good food, but we have found it average. Someone wrote here the pizza is best on the island and I have to disagree.I had chicken pizza and it was “okay”. It could be bigger and thinner, at least for the premium price of 220 000 TZS.My girlfriend had grilled king prawns for around 240 000 TZS and she got only 2 pieces and not marinated.
Very good place , frindly staff and of corse tasty food i recommended such a good experience .
Location and views are good with friendly service. I only had some icecream but that is worth a visit. The best in all of Zanzibar! The food looked good, but I had not a chance to try it, but I will make a plan to do so in the future
Ordered grilled tuna... should very simple and tasty but it’s definitely not the best in terms of presentation, taste. Fries were big potatoes cubes and spinash... tuna was over cookedreally not tasty and not to be recommended
I ordered the grilled prawns for 10$ it was okMy friend ordered the grilled chicken for theSame price 9$ the portions was so little for the chicken and she eventually left hungry we talked to the manager about it but he did nothingI dont recommend the place for any thing else other pizza and drinks
Ok, for all disappointed people, drop your expectations a lil bit. Its Zanzibar, Tanzania. Its not Naples or Rome. Be aware where you are please. Mama Mia was great for my gf & myself. Taste of Italy far far away in Africa. Enjoy mesmerizing Indian ocean, brick oven pizza, gelato, pasta, tiramisu, fair pricing, etc. Regarding slow service, youre on an island people, pole pole as they would say in Zanzibar.
Great food, excellent ice cream, nice place to chill near the ocean. Also have possibility to pay by credit cards 😉 The biggest crowd is around lunch time 1p.m. to 2 p m.
Seafood pizza is a joke. You have may be 100grm of calamari and some tuna spread around dish sized pizza. Although pizza base is traditionally Italian style perfect. When waiter brought us octopus carpaccio the accidentally fallen piece she just picked up by fingers and put back into plate!; )Food came faster than drinks.Gelato is unbeatable! We treat this place as pizzeria, bu I see some people ordering lobster ?90% of visitors are Russian, 3 years ago there were Italians , May be that’s explains food quality evolution.
One of the best pizza in the island, from an authentic Italian staff, in an incredible location with the background of the blue sea of Nungwi.
So good we have been back twice in our short stay. The food is really great, best lobster on the island, good wine, homemade gelato and all very reasonably priced. Super cool laid back vibe, in a prime spot. Great service from both the owner and all staff. Food, drinks, price and service all get 5*s.
The worst dining experience in a long time. We have been travelling through Africa for the last few weeks with nothing but pleasant and wonderful food and hospitality so this evening was extremely unexpected and disappointing. We were seated in which we ordered our drinks and were rushed into ordering our food before we had barely sat down. When our food came the portions were very small and it took us three times and two different staff members to ask for a side plate. We also had asked for chilli oil at the start of the meal and this was brought to our table when we were practically finished eating after having to ask twice. (the restaurant was in no way busy)Our plates were taken away from us while there was still food on them and when I explained I wasnt completely finished he replied you can eat with your hands. (in regards to a pizza)We were absolutely disgusted with the service at this stage so we proceeded straight to the till to pay to avoid any further dealings with the waiting staff. As we were paying it was quite obvious we were not pleased but the manager seemed to busy enjoying his cigarette to even ask us how the meal was and quite frankly seemed unbothered. On a side note - As we waited we noticed there was a large spider above the table. We asked staff if it is possible to remove this or move table. We received a shrug of the shoulders and the waiter proceeded to another table completely ignoring what we had just said.We would 100% advise to stay away from this restaurant. It is a rip off for tourists and quite an upsetting experience.
Very delicious espresso!
Fastest service in Zanzibar. Great pizza!
Dazzling sunset views, great food and nice service. Reservation is strongly advised, since getting a table can be difficult sometimes. Best lasagna I have eaten in my whole life, just amazing!
Peaceful atmosphere.. tasty food .. I like it .
Very nice place by the beach.Extremely clean and super friendly staff.Great choice for coctails and foodWe will be back for sure.Highly recommended!
Very friendly and professional staff, great Aperol spritz, amazing view and fantastic grilled tuna and seafood pasta! Highly recommended
The Italian owner was very friendly and made us feel welcome when we walked in. Service was good, faster than most places in zanzibar, the pizzas and mango panna cotta were delicious! Definitely recommend!
If you are from Italy or Spain I don’t think you are going to like it. The carbonara is just bad cheese and tons of pepper, the beef fillet is even hard to cut and poorly cooked. Desserts don’t stand out either. Its a disappointment because they clearly have a great location with good views but they are not making the most out of it. Not recommended.
We were pretty disappointed of the pizza, because there was no tomato sauce on it, which is ridiculous! That made the pizza very dry. We expect much more quality from a Italian Restaurant. The staff was not very motivated and welcoming. It seems like they are doing their job without any passion. When you pay in Dollars you get kind of cheated. The exchange rate is not fair at all. I would recommend the Blue Ocean Restaurant which is right next to it.
Nice big open air restaurant with ceiling fans. We ordered the tuna burger and a pizza with olives, mushroom & pepperoni. Both dishes were tasty and arrived quickly at our table. Our waiter Roger was friendly and helpful. We also had a coke and a sprite. No flies as we ate our food and the bill was TSH 47,000. Would definitely go back again.
Very nice place; by the beach, very tasty food (one of the best we’ve tasted in zanzibar), highly recommend the pizza and stuffed calamari.
Coffee is very nice. Also tried the homemade ice cream which is yummyHowever food did not impress. Service was faster than most places we went to. Chicken was raw, fries were too dry and oily, seems like they were double cooked rater than made fresh. We told owner who offered to make new one even when i said we happy with the same if they just cook it longer. When the “new one” cane we realized it was the same and the fries most probably also the same just been theown back to the oil to heat more as they were even dryer. Shame...Carbonara was really dry but the flavor was good. If it was creamy would have been excellent!!!!Mozzarella in salad is not fresh mozzarella. Its the boxed one that used for pizza not for salad. For an Italian restaurant with an Italian owner is not something i would expect. We don’t eat seafood at all so for us options are limited and seems they don’t really bother the quality of other options than seafood.
Staff were very unfriendly. We were not greeted when we entered. We were not asked where we wanted to sit. We then proceeded to choose our own table and when we went to sit down the waiter rudely told us that the table was reserved and made a hand gesture to go away and sit somewhere else. The waitress who comes to serves us doesnt greet although we had greeted her and instead just tells us that the kitchen is closed and we can only have Gelato or drinks. In spite of all this I still tipped her and she didnt even say thank you.
