Thank you to all the excellent team at the hotel for looking after us. We greatly enjoyed our stay in an Arabic-style villa on the beach with pool and garden. Lovely interior design and styling. The communal area is a paradise of well tended gardens, providing shade, flowers, butterflies and birdsong. An open-air personal cinema too ! The food is varied and exquisite, served in the room or in themed single table areas in the gardens such as ‘stars’ or ‘butterflies’. In summary a perfect retreat with charming and attentive hosts and staff. A beach bar with great ice cream. Michael and family.

Matlai Hotel is a true paradise. Tim and his family have created a place respectful of the blessed environment around, with a incredibly smily and careful team. A place like no other on Zanzibar, ideal for couples, honeymoons and families. I recommand a thousand times, and wish I could come back one day. Amazing memories.

The place is beautiful. We stoped there for an ice-cream and were not 100% satisfied. Just take 1 or 2 scoops because the fancy ones have nothing exceptionnal.

Staff amazing... Chef makes the best food on the beach and there are some famous options on Michamvi beach we tried several... As for the house and rooms... they are top quality and well looked after, a great mix of romantic beach style whilst being cool and modern. All 6 rooms are sea facing with balconies / terraces.. There are so many places to sit and chill... either in the bar or by the pools or in the gardens... Very very happy..
Had dinner here a couple of times whilst staying in another resort nearby. Great food, good eye for details and food presentation. The menu is reasonably priced for being a boutique hotel and they surprisingly have a variety of local dishes, which is not very common in most resorts in the area. A must try is the octopus curry and the coconut crab soup. Very welcoming and friendly staff, even though we were not guests of the hotel. I would definitely recommend it for an intimate dinner by the ocean.
I apologize for a late review, but Im guessing its better later than never. We have stayed at Hotel Matlai for four nights in March. It was a wonderful experience that we still talk about to this day (Thats why Im doing this review as it was mentioned just today) The staff is wonderful with excellent service and attitude. The food is fantastic and well organized. We have stayed at the villa with the pool and it was just perfect. Additionally we had rented a car while staying in Zanzibar and if you do as well, rest assured that your car will be safe as well. Overall Id like to thank you for an opportunity of staying with you guys and I hope you never change, or if you do, only for the better. If opportunity arise, I definitely see myself staying at Hotel Matlai again.

Matlai is a place for dreamers... The unique boutique hotel impresses with spectacular villas, surrounded by lush nature, turquoise sea and endless horizons. If I had to describe my experience at Matlai in one word, Id say extraordinary. It took me a few days to process my stay and after I left, I realized that this has been probably the most beautiful place we have ever stayed, in all our years of traveling.Matlai is the absolute perfect place for a romantic honeymoon or lovers getaway, it cant get any better. The villas are large and comfortable, guests enjoy having a big house with all luxury amenities to themselves. Being able to watch the stars from your private pool with your loved one is simply priceless. Im not exaggerating :) We were celebrating our 3rd wedding anniversary here and it just made us feel, like our honeymoon.We stayed in the Villa Kidosho, that is tastefully decorated in oriental style, hosts very spacious rooms that made us feel so relaxed, the moment we stepped in.The bathroom of our Villa Kidosho, with two separate showers in one space, and a large bathtub offering a bath menue and with sea views of course.We had half board during our stay, which was more than plenty because the service and the food literally blew my mind. For breakfast a delicious selection of exotic fruits, homemade breads or pastries selected from a menue has been served on our terrace every day. It was such a delight to try all those different flavors and if youre a fan of fresh juices and smoothies, youll be amazed by their everyday selection. Youre also flexible with selecting the dinner menue and location for the dinner. We have been served at the beach, under hidden palm trees with flower decorations, lanterns and moonlit skies - this is another romantic heaven. The Chefs fresh selection will exceed all your expectations.What I should definitely highlight is the Matlai Team. The owner Inge and Tim, who manage a wonderful, always smiling, very service oriented and proffessional team, who make you feel unique and special every single day.I left the Zanzibar, relaxed, tanned, with a few new freckles and a big smile on my face. A few days on Zanzibar had an instant effect on me. But it was not only the stunning surroundings, and the amazing food... Also the kindness of the people working there made our time on the island unforgettable. - THANK YOU!Highly recommend the exclusive trip to small islands organized by the Management as well.Im forever grateful that I had the chance to visit this place and were just planning to come back for our next wedding anniversary. HEAVEN ON EARTH! Hotel Matlai is the most amazing place weve stayed in a long time (and we do travel the world). The location and quietness of the place is wonderful but what truly makes the stay memorable is the staff (each member of the Matlai team are just a delight) and the food (top quality a la carte dishes prepared by super talented chefs). We cannot recommend Matlai highly enough, its been such a lovely experience - every detail is thought of to make the guests have the most amazing experience. A truly 10/10!
Booked a week here, the reviews looked good, great in fact! The reviews dont even begin to convey how great!From the moment we arrived it was service of the highest order, dont worry the hotel is fantastic, amazing grounds, stunning views of a truly beautiful sea and beach but the service wow!The rooms are big, clean and pretty. You get everything you need, big TV, WiFi, fridge, great shower, huge bathtub, mozzy nets and so it goes on.The service though was just amazing, Manager Tim was great, nothing was too much trouble, taxi transfers, open air cinema night, spa treatments whatever you need. All of the staff followed his lead, Saleem, Mohammed and Yousef and all the team were just brilliant, always on hand but never intrusive. A most amazing place in an amazing place!
Matlai gave us the romantic, luxurious escape in Zanzibar we needed for our 15th anniversary. As locals who won this superb prize at a raffle, we only spend 1 night here, but wish it were for a week!We were housed in a splendid double room in Villa Kidosho, the villa inspired by the sultans of old. The place was meticulously decorated, with items taken from one of Stone Towns best known curio shop.Our Butlers, Regina and Justice were there to make sure our experience was deluxe. Tim and Inge were generous with their welcome: a cold towel and fresh dafu (coconut) with rum, if you like. I arrived late, almost 6PM, but they still made me find a way to get a much needed massage!Our space provided the privacy we needed, so much so that we met none of the guests. If you want and need peace and quiet, this place will give it to you, as it has only 6 rooms.Its a perfect place for a romantic getaway!

The villa was absolutely fantastic. Stunning view of the ocean, personalised service, privacy, very nice pool. At Matlai you feel you are the only one along in the area. Beach area not so crowded.
!!This is a review for then Beach Bar/Restaurant of the Matlai Hotel - not the hotel itself!!!Me and my friends had dinner at the Restaurant of the matlai hotel.We came at 7pm, no one recognized us for 20 minutes. After going to the bar to order, we waited another 2 hours (!!!) for our food.Of course we mentioned how long we were waiting to the waiter, who told us that we should be happy - and at least brought us a small snack.At 9:30 we got 2 of the meals we ordered. 15 minutes later one more, without the included sauce.Another 30 minutes later, there was still one missing and we told the waiter again.He said it would be our own fault, we should have mentioned it before.....At 21:50 we finally had everything, and ordered two desserts. We asked if at least one of them would be for free - because we waited for almost 3 hours (there was one more group at the restaurant - 2 waiters for about 10 people altogether)After asking for the check, one of the waiters told us that one of our cheesecakes was for free and said he was sorry that the food took so long..But as we looked at the check, we saw that the 4,5$ of the second cheesecake were - very subtle - added to the prices of the other meals - which were somehow 4,5$ more expensive then in the menu ......of corse we told him, and he answered that his collegue wrote the check and it was just a fake.....What more can I say ....Its really a pitty the service was that (!!) bad, because we really liked the food..Unfortunately, we wont be going there ever again.

It was an all around perfect vacation. The hotel is magical, the staff are very friendly and attentive. Sometimes you would like to have a few more stars. Everything great!
We had an extraordinary stay in this intimate hotel, where everything is done so that you do not miss anything. The staff are very attentive and very smiling from morning to night. The bedroom and bathroom are beautiful and extremely clean. The massages are divine and not overpriced, and the dinner menu is top notch, with the luxury of choosing where to set your table ... just perfect !!! Special mention to the signature cocktails at the bar to try absolutely! Thank you for this stay that we will not forget!
Zanzibar is famous for its many all-inclusive resorts. We had a hard time getting out of this pattern and finding a place as private and unique as Matlai, perfect for our honeymoon.We stayed in the house with 4 rooms that were rather small bungalows with access to the garden, overlooking the pool and the Indian Ocean. We woke up to the sound of the waves. The hotel is perfectly integrated into nature and African style, every little detail in the room is spectacular and makes you feel at ease.It is a place with a lot of essence.Meals were served wherever you wanted, which was almost always on our private balcony. All the food is fresh, different and very tasty. Good selection of South African wines, delicious tropical cocktails.No buffet meals, everything was made at the moment with a lot of love. They took into account all our requests.The staff is very attentive to every detail, they helped us with absolutely everything! They managed the excursion to one of the islands, the taxis, the PCRs.We just had to worry about having fun, disconnecting and enjoying ourselves, and even so, our time flew by!It was the best choice we could have made.We will remember this place forever and the time spent in it, hoping to return one day!A big hug to the entire Matlai team!Anna & Felipe
The Matlai Boutique Hotel is a little slice of paradise nestled on Zanzibars Michamvi Peninsula.In a splendid tropical garden, facing a turquoise sea and an immense white sand beach, bordered by palm trees, this establishment is a true haven of peace and comfort.The property is built with respect for the surrounding nature - palm trees grow in the middle of the lobby and one of the swimming pools.The decoration is typical while being sober and designer. The bedrooms are large and bright, the bathrooms huge. You can see the sea everywhere: from the bed, the bathroom, the terrace ...A mobile phone is available to contact the butler at any time.Everything has been designed to satisfy the least comfort of the guests, such as the multitude of nooks and crannies to rest in the sun or in the shade: deckchairs, swings, hammocks, hanging beds, cabin beds ... For the evenings, games are available, a bookstore and even an outdoor cinema with popcorns provided!The team is very caring and cheerful - they anticipated our needs and prepared some nice surprises for us. Special mention to Andrew and Mohamed - the butlers who pampered us and to Catherine for her good humor! Tim, the manager, is very welcoming and very helpful in exploring the island.The chef is very creative, the meals are excellent and can be taken at any time and wherever you like: in the restaurant, on the terrace, in the garden, on the beach… the seafood barbecue is a real feast!At the bar, dont miss Freddys special cocktails!And finally, Mariam welcomed us to her treehouse spa for wonderful massages.In short, everything is done to have a dream holiday!
Honeymoon from September 19 to 26, 2020.Greeted by Tim, the hotel manager, a kind and helpful man who made it possible for us to have an exceptional vacation.A butler on hand, Justice, who looked after us like royalty. A cell phone with which we could contact him at any time.The pool for us alone as the hotel was empty in these COVID times, the absolute dream.Hearty and quality meals morning and evening, a breathtaking view.The sea recedes in the afternoon to reveal a strip of turquoise sea that can be reached in 5 minutes on foot.Be careful with the bag left on the beach, you can quickly find yourself trapped by the rising water.In short, go there with your eyes closed.Many thanks to Tim for this unforgettable honeymoon.

Welcome to Paradise !! Everything was perfect: idyllic setting, cleanliness, staff all adorable without exception, very attentive while being discreet, the management extremely friendly with a very warm welcome, excellent meals. Hotel facing the sea, feet in the water, with corals in front! Take the opportunity to also have a massage facing the sea! The masseuse is extraordinary !! Everything was great, thank you again to the whole team !!The most beautiful hotel experience of my life, with a bed prepared while we dine and a little story on the bed. breakfast on the terrace and so good. Then a wonderful surprise for our 1 year of marriage with a dinner on the beach. in short, thank you to you and a big big up to Mohamed who enhanced our stay.
Everything is individual, every day you can eat elsewhere in the hotel area for dinner. The quality is excellent and the compilation will decide you during the day. Each part of the system has its own story and the boss, Tim, likes to tell you that. There are only 6 rooms in the whole huge area, that means you will definitely not step on the feet of other guests, pure relaxation from everyday stress is here program!
