Looks chill. Nice view of the Rock. Theres a swimming pool but its charged 20k daily use with sun beds. Dont be mistaken you can jump in without paying even for a quick dip 😂We came for drinks and lunch. Not bad but not much impressed with the quality.

I came here in 2013 and had already found it to be a nice slice of paradise, but thanks to recent renovations, its risen to a new level of perfection. The pool and lounge areas were perfect for a few rounds of afternoon drinks. Definitely worth checking out.

Restaurant with an Ibiza-esque setting, which might not appeal to all but Ill admit was well achieved. Music with DJ and violinist was excellent. The food was good overall but overpriced for the quality offered. The super long menu using a QR is a mistake as it takes too long to go over to then remember what you actually want, and staff should be able to explain the dishes being offered. Other than this little issue, service was correct. I totally recommend the chocolate brownie, best in Zanzibar.

Incredible. Stayed for 6 nights and had such a great time! Absoluty recommended to stay for holidays or just a great time for really good food and good music.

Beautiful place and very good food. However, paying 20.000 shillings (plus drinks and food) for a dirty beach bed, no towels provided and not possible to eat on it, we had to move to the restaurant …? Strange …

Writing this from another hotel in Zanzibar...We loved Upendo!True, the food does take time. But we tried octopus, samosa, sushi, curry, burgers, different breakfasts (6 day stay), everything was tasty! Cocktails were great too.We loved the design of the beach front villa with pool (practical, fresh water dispenser in the room).It was perfect as our base on the east coast.Know that the beach is not good for swimming, but great for snorkeling!

Its something that happens with many of the zanzibari businesses which are successful. They become very comercial, they lose the personal touch. So after waiting 10min like someone to take my order, 20min someone to clean my table, 30min for a cocktail and 1hour for the food (i came for sushi and i found only fried rice with mayo tuna/crab on top) I received as well an extra charge on my bill of 5usd/pers. The reason: i come to eat for brunch! So in order to eat here late breakfast you need to pay extra. And seems that if you want to use the facilities now you need to pay 10usd extra as well. One more beautiful place that was spoiled by... No more recommendations for this place for jow.. its just another european place, another money factory, beautiful but without the zanzibarian atmosphere. All the best

The Upendo is an awesome place to stay, a bit hippie-bohemian, totally unpretentious, very chilled and laid back, very friendly, perfectly positioned for nightlife at Paje, the famous Rock Restaurant is right there, the beach is very lively, the whole beach is well integrated with locals, reefs for snorkeling nearby. We loved the spirit of the place and also that there are day guests who bring life and diversity to the place. The food is good, service is slow bit very friendly - very laid back. Will definitely come back!

The worst place I have ever been!THE only good/nice thing is the rock in front but service and especially food are really really bad! Both mine and my girlfriends dishes were just bad, not fresh and expensive on top. We waited 1 hour and 38 minutes for a salad and the restaurant was not even full. On top of that the prawns on my salad were really not fresh and smelled old and even tasted bad. Hope the next days I wont have some stomach problems.If you even have a little bit of experience in Sansibar than you will know that anywhere else its 10 times better.I dont wright many reviews but this time I could not hold back....Best regards

Beautiful restaurant and location. Unfortunately the food was terrible overall and disappointing.We had a tuna maki which was mostly rice. The swahili curry was absolutely tasteless. The papaya salad was soggy and not fresh.The thai curry was average.We also had a brownie with ice cream for dessert. The brownie was soggy and perhaps undercooked and the ice cream has a weird artificial taste.The food quality was definitely not what we expected in such a beautiful place and high prices.Good place for a few drinks but dont waste time with their food

Upendo restaurant has a beautiful setting and great ambiance, however last night they did not get it right. We had dinner with my friend and we both took the local coconut curry, she had it with beef and I had with calamari. I got painful cramps and all symptoms of bad stomach, even though I live on the island and accostumed to local food and hygiene...

Very nice resort. Amazing pool. Rooms are spacious and modern. Nice music playing throughout the public areas gives it a nice vibe.

Terrible services !We waited 2 hours for a see food platter.Let’s say that is acceptable because everyone should be Pole Pole but the food was terrible. Octopus was uneatable ! The shrimps overcooked with a bad smell..The place is beautiful but the food and services horribleEnjoy

I love upendo and so do my kid. Sadly the food is way too expensive. The wraps is really boring but the kids menu for fish is really good. Still think the prices is to expensive but love love love the area, the view and the people working here. The pool is also amazing 💚

Nice place for chilling out and having a good meal. Good food, proper wi-fi (ask for a voucher at the bar). Exceelent view of The Rock and a nice beach to walk and take photos.

Not the best part of the island unless you’re looking for young British couples. Very quiet and scenic though. Upendo is definitely the standout on this beach. Solid food, friendly staff and comfortable/ quiet rooms. We could’ve stayed on the rooftop of the private villa the entire time (and basically did!).

Went here to eat, absolutely wonderful experience:The atmosphere was great, facilities certainly looked very nice.The food was pretty good. I had a crab curry which I would comfortably say is one of the best Ive ever had. Other seafood was pretty good, but not excellent. Curries are the go-to for this restaurant.Service was excellent, the staff was friendly and helpful and the food arrive in a respectable amount of time for what was ordered.Definitely would recommend this restaurant.

Bad stuff, maybe a bit impolite comparing to other bars in Zanzibar. This was the only place where we had uncomfortable conversation with stuff. :(

One of the best hotels on the island. We got upgraded to a beach villa with a private swimming pool on the roof - absolutely epic.The restaurant was amazing, lovely fresh food served all day long. Fully recommend that you go with the daily specials and to finish off with a brownie - its famous for them!!!!The staff are so lovely, always willing to help and always making sure youre doing the right thing at the right time. They organised an amazing trip to Prison Island, rented us a 4x4 Jeep, told us the great places for sunsets and much more.Thank you Upendo for a fantastic stay, we will be back!

The atmosphere is relaxing. The view is amazing. The food is good and they have a big variety of cocktails. Internet is fast. Staff is very friendly and professional. Some hangers could be added in the bathroom and more water pressure in the shower.

Excellent food and service. Was surprised by the new menu prices as it was not updated online and the owners gave the old menu price and were very kind. King prawns were exactly as hoped for :)

There is construction at the moment, so not everything is accessible... But even so, our stay was great! The staff is amazing and the accommodations are incredible

We absolutely recommend this peaceful and tranquil Beach resort for their magical treehouse-like rooms and wonderful and helpful staff. They try to instill pole pole into your stay the moment you arrive and help you relax in every way. We did eat here quite a bit since it was in-house and easy-nice menu and good food with great service, but we preferred to eat at other places as well and I would recommend stepping out and trying others. They are steps away down the beach from an wonderfully delicious italian (..yes italian!) restaurant called Baldin (beautiful as well and you can hang seaside ) and right next door is a great bare bones catch of the day fish restaurant as well called Pandu ngozi . When we didn’t want to lounge around and stay locally to our own beach , they were able to get us a cheap short taxi to Kea beach for sunset and music at a reggae bar and right next door at there was tiny Laguna beach bar for some safari beers while sitting in the sea. We walked down stunning the Konokono beach resort a bit further down for a step up in cocktails or dinner and a setting that will leave you slightly breathless at how beautiful a hotel can be .

Great variety of reasonably priced food - perfect also for a light lunch by the beach. Service is good and they have large tables that can accommodate groups. The biggest plus for us were the two super friendly dogs!

What a brilliant small boutique hotel. Full of character, great staff, great vibe. Everybody makes you feel very welcome. Villas have amazing view and a nice Ibiza style. Food is outstanding and varied. The bar area is open to everyone and good fun. 100% recommended!

Amazing food, exceptional service and the friendliest team made our stay very memorable! However, this hotel is far from modern luxury. We came here after a few nights at the Park Hyatt, for double the price.. what a downgrade. The website and reviews got our expectations high, we paid an exorbitant price for 3 nights and sadly I cant say it was worth it. The premise was minimal, ordinary and basic, would not associate elegant and boutique with this place at all. Much more of an upscale backpackers lodge, very chilled out vibes. Sadly disappointed as the photos and descriptions were not parallel with our stay.

I have been here everyday for nearly a week using their pool,bar and restaurant. Super lovely Place, friendly staff always on hand to bring you drinks , food and a welcoming smile. Good menù choice and reasonably priced.

Such a lovely place. Lovely staff. Everyone was so attentive and helpful. Its a great location if you want to chill. Bit quiet when but that is fine as just want to relax.Food was great and good value-for-money.

We did not stay here but in our 6 days spent in Michamvi we ate at Upendo quite a few times. Easily the best food we tasted in our 2.5 weeks in Zanzibar, compliments to the chef. The sushi (only on Fridays), the fried rice, the butter chicken, the fried octopus and the desserts were delicious. The only two dishes that we tried and were not impressed with were the Caesar Salad and the Falafel Wrap.Also huge compliments to the staff, extremely attentive (one of the chefs was passing by and noticed we had empty dishes so took them away and offered another drink) and friendly. Best pina colada we had in a while and all cocktails very good in general. Great view and enough area to chill and relax. Beautiful infinity pool overlooking The Rock.Highly recommend!

Peter, Jeni and the team (particularly Salim) were so lovely and attentive to us. They made us feel entirely at home, made sure we were comfortable and went above and beyond to make the entire stay relaxing and fun. Our villa (Kusum) was beautifully furnished, with an excellent rooftop pool to ourselves and wide open sand leading us from our doorstep to the pristine ocean. All the little details like linens, bath products, coffee and tea accessories felt custom selected to give the villa a unified look and feel. The kitchen turned out wonderful food for all meals, including very nice juices and cocktails. Top notch across the board. Thank you again to Peter, Jeni, Salim and team!

Being frequent guest to beautiful Zanzibar island I have been visiting Upendo bar and restaurant for years now, travelling from south of the island, for their weekly Sunday afternoon event (food/drinks/DJ)Upendo is an upmarket proposition where premium offer/service/goods go with the relevant pricing.During my last visit in Upendo I purchased a beautifil 20 USD neck piece in their on-premises jewelery and clothing store.Week later I decided to wear it for the first time and item literally deconstructed on my neck revealing faulty finishing and placement of one of the strings.Coming from the place that calls for high pricing I decided to call Upendo on their service quality first.Upendo received an inquiry where we asked for advice and hopefully a helpful solution.To my great surprise we were told that there is nothing that could be done, item looks like damaged by user, notification comes in week later and there were no other complaints to similar items - therefore there is nothing Upendo could do to help.Dear Upendo! The item you charged fair amount of money for, did literally fell apart on my neck. It was faulty. I did not pull it and I did not damage it. I hoped for your advice and help.For the premium experience that you built and charge for one would expect at least bare minimum of proactive client approach.

After a scooter ride on the beach during the low tide we visited the Upendo beach bar, had drinks and desert (great deep fried icecream) and relaxed by the pool with a view of the famous Rock. Also, we found that Upendo has one of the cleanest toilets on whole of Zanzibar!

Nice view of the Rock restaurant , great garden, nice restaurant. We came for a drink at the rock and dinner here in Upendo. Ask the hotel to book you a taxi. It’s totally worth an afternoon here on the beach.

Situated in Pingwe, Upendo Beach is right in front to The Rock Restaurant and there are a lot of tours and activities nearby.The beach is not the best to swim, which is obviously not Upendos fault but its possible to walk in a beautiful sandbank during the low tide and the hotel has swimming pool.The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated.The doors and windows needs refurbishment.

It’s a very special place to spend the day... you can take the sun, swim in the swimming pool and eat something... the food is very good and it costs much less than the near “ The Rock”...I suggest to take the mixed grilled seafood.

Fantastic chill out area in Pingwe opposite to the restaurant The Rock. Friendly and helpful staff, very tidy and well organized place. If you hang out in Pingwe, definitely recommend to go to the Upendo bar.
