I love the place, however, its being ruined bit by bit. They had 5 course meals in the evening two months ago, now, to save money and because they can’t manage the speed of service, they simply changed to a really bad buffet, food on the level of a cheap 2-star all inclusive resort. After two days you will loose your Appetite by just thinking about that food. The local employees are gold, they are warm, caring and professional, but they are getting scolded infront of the guests and screamed at by management - right there while you have breakfast! Makes you feel ashamed and extremely uneasy as a guest who, by staying there, supports this management. Obviously, it doesn‘t motivate the staff. No wonder the place is falling apart. Really really badly managed. The claim that they are 5-star is a complete joke, its max. 3 star, even if the location is amazing. I hope they will at some point get good management and start to care about their guests and staff, then the place would be absolutely amazing! Until then, even though I love Konokono, I cannot return.

This is an absolutely stunning hotel. The staff were all amazing and the grounds felt like we were in a mini paradise. The breakfast buffet had great food and all the drink were (expensive) but still so good. The beach was one of the finest most sand beaches I had been on. It was a breathtaking placeCon: I’m a big fan of things that just look good. The first two night we were in a stunning villa much like the one we saw when we booked. The second two nights we stayed at a less asthetic villa with a weird layout and poor garden maintenance. The toilet worked half the time.

We stayed at an over water bungalow and it was breathtaking. These private rooms come with a soling tub and body scrubbing creams. There is also a rain shower, a water closet with a bidet, an extra large king bed and outside we have steps that walk down int the ocean. The design and decor is incredible and is thoughtful. We also have our own private pool and all other amenities like a safe, house keeping twice daily and a selection of drinks. The bungalows have their own exclusive restaurant that only five villas can attend if you dont feel like going up to the standard part of the buffet. There is a large pool for the whole resort but renting an over water bungalow is the way to go. The only bad thing about this resort is that the power grid will go out on occasion for 2-10 minutes before it kicks back on and also the water pressure sometimes just completely cuts out which is frustrating. But overall I give this resort a B+ to and A-The food is well done as the chef is from Belgium and creates a fusion of French/local cuisine for every meal.

I can honestly say, this is one of the most coolest places Ive ever stayed in. staff is friendly and place is clean.be carefull from the monkey though. nut guess tthats normal considering ure staying in the middle of a forest.TIP: if youre renting a car, make sure u arrive there at morning as the road from the main highway to the location is very bumpy and not easy (most of zanzibar is by the way)

Me and my husband visited this hotel on a weekend in April, 2021. We booked the hotel on Saturday of the weekend we were going to stay there. We got an amazing deal for a villa (with a plunge pool). It was an amazing experience. The resort cleanliness, the staff, the food, the beach, the free activities (kayaking, snooker pool, pedal boat, etc.), the room and the plunge pool was all worth every penny we spent on!! The food is highly recommended - extremely fresh and delicious. We are vegetarian so the chef and the hotel manager was kind enough to tweak the dishes (from the fixed menu) to our taste. As this was a last minute plan, we did not even have a charger to charge our phones...we were helped with that as well several times. Thank you so much Konokono. Just one complain we had was for the room service which was a bit slow. Rest, it was an unforgettable experience!

We’ve spent 4 nights in the garden villa at Konokono beach resort. Its a beautiful, spacious room with small private garden area and plunge pool. The hotel combines the jungle feeling and beach vacation perfectly. All in all we were very happy with our stay but there are a few downsides. Some things in the rooms as well as in the common areas seemed a bit old. Such as the shower and toilet in the room. Also the big pool on the sun deck and the pathways could need some retouch. In my opinion there is not enough shade around the sunbeds at the pool and on the beach. The food was nice. Especially diner we enjoyed a lot. Unfortunately there were a lot of flies, mostly during breakfast, which was very annoying. However lunch on most days was average.A big plus for us was that you can use stand up paddling and kayaks for free. There are quite a lot of amenities, such as Pool, table tennis, volley ball, and the above mentioned. Sadly they did not have balls for badminton and racketball.

I enjoyed my stay here. It’s a very clean resort (private pool cleaned daily and room cleaned every morning and in the evening when you’re at dinner). Their restaurants with its 5 course dinners is very decent, and you can ask for your table to be set up at the beach. Also canoes and SUPs available.

I have incredibly mixed feelings about our stay. Overall, it was absolutely wonderful. We stayed in an overwater villa for 4 nights after our honeymoon safari. The overwater villas are stunning - extremely well designed and comfortable. The overwater villas have access to a private dining experience, as well, which is really nice. For this alone, its absolutely worth staying at KonoKono. The only negatives are:1) Uneven meals. Depending on which chef was in the kitchen, meals ranged from excellent to terrible. (We learned to peek in the window of the kitchen: if the tall woman chef was in the kitchen, we knew the meal would be amazing. But the other chefs were not good.)2) Confused management. Communication was not great. When we first checked in, we were told that there was no booking under our name -- chaos ensured -- (we did have a booking and it worked out). We also booked massages, but were told later that we would have to pay for a taxi to get to a neighboring hotel for the massage. Also, the phone in our room did not work, which made it hard to order room service, etc. And a small thing - they said we would have access to snorkeling equipment at the hotel, but then did not have any.Im *sure* that some of these minor complaints are due to COVID, as we travelled just as things were beginning to open up. Hopefully they get worked through as more travelers arrive

Avoid this noisy 4-star hotel, we shortened our stayWe expected great new overwater villas and 5-star hotel standards. Recent delisting of this hotel from major booking platform should have warned me. It was rather suffering than relaxing due to never-ending annoying extremely loud techno music from nearby bar, poor hotel equipment, ugly beach and incompetent top manager. First time in our live we decided to shorten our stay there and move to other hotel even risking that we do not get refund for unused days (which happened). Luckily the next hotel was fantastic.Biggest positive – new pier and overwater villas look nice, even though there are a lot of issues. The biggest negatives:1) Noise, BIG NOISE, from nearby beach bar – it starts at around 2PM each day and lasts till late night. My apple watch showed over 60 dB on the worst days at both dinner and villa area and over 50 dB in the “best” days. Complains on this noise was practically the only topic when talking to other guests. We have seen one lady to even scream on management because of this issue.2) This hotel doesn’t meet many of official 5-star hotel requirements (e.g. missing fitness, SPA, daily cleaning of the floors and plenty of others) and except pier with villas it also looks more like ordinary 3-star hotel (no atmosphere, cheap restaurant equipment, no maintained garden,...).3) Beach was definitely the far ugliest 5-star hotel beach we have ever seen (unbelievable amount of not cleaned seaweed + plenty of cheap old “huts”).Villa – looks nice, but finishing is poor – e.g. water leaks through every window during the rain. Materials used inside are shocking cheap, especially furniture. There is real problem with privacy – half the of terrace is visible from the pier. As the stairs do not go down enough, we were able to go to water and climb back to villa only approx. 1 hour per day at high tide, when 3 stairs at 2 m height were covered with water. No way to use stairs it by older people. Security issue – strange local fishermen parking at villa terrace stairs. Power outages 10 times per day. Internet sufficient only to mails and website browsing.Massages – we went to local massage room as pointed by signs. I have never seen so ugly and dirty hole – see the picture. Shame on you, hotel manager.Food – good seafood and pasta. The rest is mostly catastrophe and the quality varies. Especially local food is disgusting unlike at other places. Poor plating and lot of basic mistakes.Restaurant service – perfect waiter at breakfast and couple of good guys at dinner On the beginning of our stay they were delivering coffee from main restaurant usually 40 minutes. Some guys at bar can not even operate coffee machine.Cleaning services – generally acceptable at the villa, but terrible at public places – windows, mirrors, stairs, pathways are not cleaned. I drew a sun on the terribly dirty window at restaurant, it was there even after a week. Toilets sometimes smelling.Management – openly saying, hotel is not managed at all. There were only two guys, who really wanted to improve services (food and service manager and guest relation manager) and they tried to implement something already during our stay. Top manager of the hotel, old guy, is e.g. walking in dirty areas and he just doesn’t see it. He tries to be unreachable for complaining guests and doesnt fulfill its promises repeatedly.PS: After the hotel reply below, which is full of obvious and funny lies, I did some research. I have found that the hotel clearly doesn’t comply with several Zanzibar 5-star vacation hotel requirements described in Zanzibar tourism act 2009, actually it should only be 3-star hotel according to this act. How is it possible for hotel to get two star higher category by Zanzibar Tourism Commission, and be so arrogant on the top of that? I discovered that hotel is owned by Amina Amani Karume, daughter of Zanzibar ex-president, Mr. Amani Abeid Karume. BINGO - that seems to explain it all.

The resort is generally good but there are a few unpleasant experiences. First, the TV was not working and was never resolved untill we left despite numerous reports. Dining menu is leaning towards locals cuisines but still have options for everyone. Bonus star for their duo of magical masseuses, they truly could rejuvenate your tired body and soul.

Lovely hotel with great looking beach. The room (villa) was large with good spacing. Excellent food options for both breakfast and dinner(both were including fresh fruit bar). The beach is very good with with sand and not crowded. The water is clear especially at high tight. No coral reefs near, only sandy/grass bottom (not good for snorkeling) and the water gets muddy on bottom at low tide (beach shoes are needed)

On behalf of my family who stayed this December in the Konokono beach resort I’d like to inform you about the inappropriate conduct of the resort team, which deleted our review from TripAdvisor. My family booked and paid for 4 nights in the new Isaraya luxury villas, owned by and located in the Konokono beach resort. Upon arrival there were several problems, the main one is that the short ladder from the villa did not reach the water, making it impossible to swim for those who have difficulty walking. Frequent electricity cuts were another issue. My family asked the management to allow to leave after 3 nights, refunding the money for the 4th night. They were assured in writing of the readiness to agree on that, but the manager refused to issue a refund a day prior to departure. On the day of departure there was no cash available, and the return to the card did not work. Nevertheless, there was a written confirmation of the hotels obligations and assurance of immediate transfer to the account within 2 days, which didn’t happen. Now a month has passed and there is no reaction to calls and letters, and our review was deleted from the TripAdvisor (first it was publishes, so TripAdvisor approved it). If the money is refunded, we will update the review to inform about it.

Exceptional hospitality and location. Spoiled with a magnificent sunset, on the east coast. The beach is quiet, with a few bars within walking distance. Perfect for honey mooners, perhaps too little action for familys travelling with teens, but the hotel ground was equipped with pool table and other entertaining games. There were jetski and water sport possibilites on the beach for the more adventurous. This is one of the more intimate 5 star hotels the island has to offer, and provided a much more personal experience than the other 5 star resorts I have visited on the island. In which you might get the impression you are a part on a conveyor belt in a large tourist-charter machine. Can warmly recommend a couple of days here, dont miss out on the wildlife in the nearby Jozani forest (25 min drive).

One of the worst hotels weve visited.Rooms are extremely basic and nothing like the pictures. The inside is bare and looks like its missing furniture. The outside cushions look like someone has died on them. I wouldnt let my dog sleep on it. Hot water lasts for 3 minutes, so if youre more than one person in the room prepare for cold showers. The honeymoon package came with a broken champagne glass (really classy). The beds are uncomfortable and small. The towels are all, and I mean all, filthy dirty. From the towel you use to dry yourself after the shower to the hand towels in the toilets - disgusting.Food was diabolical. For a 5 star hotel offering a buffet dinner, serving pasta with tomato sauce is just unacceptable. They offer absolutely nothing fresh and there are more than 20 members of staff ready to take your plate to the table, a little overwhelming seeing as we were the only couple dinning.Hotel staff, most are lovely but watch out for reception. They will try to scam you out of every Euro possible. We wanted to rent a car, they organised some dude to drop off his car which was a heap of junk that came with a 50cm machete under the driver floor mat charging 50usd per day. Only after we left, our new hotel organised a jeep convertible for half the price. The beach activities include a both kayaks and paddle boards, however, nothing can be used because all of the paddles are either faulty or broken. The masais (typical African security guard) are all on their phones, all the time. They are just placed there like a Disneyland attraction.Max, who is someone we only spoke to on the phone, is a liar. He is the root of the the issues as he was telling our agency one thing, and us a different story. This cause heat between everyone.Lastly, the general manager, Mauricio, is one of the worst people Ive ever had the pleasure of meeting. All of the staff are scared of him and his way to solve problems are to shout at his guests and try to scare us into leaving. It didnt work and I actually managed to get a picture of him screaming and pointing his finger at us while accusing us of breaking glassesHe also threatened us to call the police should we carry on complaining. This is the general manager of this 5 star hotel.STAY AWAY.

Konokono is a fantastic hotel, there’s absolutely no denying it. The beach is glorious (better than the Indian Ocean facing east coast resorts), the sea is glorious - the entire setting is stunning and the number of guests is perfect for quiet relaxation. Sipping on a cold Kilimanjaro beer watching sunset....what could be better? Konokono sets the bar high for itself, it’s a 5 star hotel and is not cheap, therefore minor issues do take the shine off. As other reviewers have mentioned the service was a little relaxed at times (4 star - no problem, 5 star maybe you want sharper service) but I must say the senior staff were professional to a tee. The Beach Pavillion, although fabulous did look a little tired in places (again, 4 star - expected, 5 star you notice these things). Finally, and I know it’s not their fault the nearby beach bar’s music was a little loud for a little too long (1-2am), for heavy sleepers it won’t be an issue but it was just enough to disturb me, I sorted the situation by administering plenty of Kilimanjaro and ear plugs. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we loved it but the pencil needs sharpening in some areas.

Konokono is a rleaxed and luxurious resort tucked away on a peninsula. The villas with plunging pool are large, well kept and luxurious, large bathrooms, great sleeping comfort and tea/coffee facilities in the villa. The open restaurant and pool area is just beautiful and dinner is set amongst the stars. The beach is well kept and extremely white sandy. There are canoes, surfboards and sports facilities available. The sea is nice although snorkeling is disappointing, not much to see. You would have to rent a boat to get further out. Renting and booking transport to Stonetown is very expensive, so try to go to the beach huts next, they are arrange things for less than half.

My only complaint is that I should have stayed longer!! I am still dreaming of Konokono. From the moment I arrived at the airport in Zanzibar, it was off to a great start. The loveliest driver from Konokono named Hamisi was waiting for me with a sign. He would end up driving me around Zanzibar throughout my stay there, introducing me to the culture through sightseeing, good music, and conversation!Upon arriving at Konokono, youre immediately greeted by the kindest, warmest group of people who know you, remember you, and ensure that each individual guest receives a 5 star (can I say 6 star?) experience. Ally Chota Head of Guest Relations, is an absolute star. He made sure everyone gave me VIP treatment, and even set it up so I would receive only delicious vegan meals when I would attend a dinner. Among the others who really went above and beyond are Rebecca, Harold, and many others!!I stayed at the private Beach Pavillion, which is the most beautiful spacious room, complete with A/C, a huge beautifully designed bathroom, giant fluffy bed with mosquito net draping, private outdoor plunge pool, patio, and private beach chairs. Cocktails and food can be delivered pool-side or to your room. I recommend the Pina Colada made fresh! As a single female traveler, my first thoughts upon entering a new place are all around safety. Ally reassured me that the grounds are patrolled by traditonal Maasai tribesmen (who you really do see patrolling the beaches and walkways to keep the resort being and feeling safe at all times and when you talk to them are super warm and helpful). The staff was always respectful and friendly, and by the end of the visit I would happily call them my friends.Another memorable highlight was experiencing a live serenade by a group of traditonal musicians during dinner, overlooking the endless sea. So authentic and mesmerizing.Through the hotel, I booked excursions and went diving with dolphins twice, snorkeling, and visiting the Rock. I also saw the cutest monkeys in nearby Jozani forest. I prefered seeing the quiet villages, coasts, and meeting the wonderful locals so I spent only a little time in Stone Town (which is also a beautiful and educational tour the hotel arranges, but the city itself is a bit busier than what I was looking for on this trip). I fell in love with Michamvi, the area in which Konokono is located.Overall, the resort itself is beyond stunning, with clean, luxurious rooms, fine dining, and a breathtaking white coastline and pure serenity. But the hospitality of the people working at or with Konokono took it to the next level.I would recommend this to anyone coming to Zanzibar (singles, couples, friends, and families). I seriously cannot wait to come back!

A 3-star hotel does not have the standard of a 5-star at all, its shameful!!! No water at the tap no pressure bad bedding and no bedside table you have to climb the headboard to turn off the alarm clock very annoying for me in the morning…. the electricity is scary especially for the children the wires are apparent on the spots of the alleys serving the rooms, the beach no water algae that yes no cleaning on the beach of the hotel plastic bottles box cover baby pacifier … . That is not at all 5 stars as far as the hot drinks and fruit juice breakfast is concerned, paying the total delirium while the price includes breakfast…. I have never paid extra for my drinks in other hotels very strange we had to spend 10 nights we left after 3 nights for a real 5 star in the north of Zanzibar and we paid the bill for the supplements knowing that we did not take advantage of our entire stay finally the management not commercial at all I do not recommend this hotel who wants to play in the big leagues I hope that my testimony will prevent you from being disappointed like me and my husband.Christine

Impossible management, very unfriendly. It is not a 5 star hotel. We stayed in the water villa. You cant relax there from 3 p.m. until evening, since loud music can be heard from the bar opposite every day. Often until night.Room service, buffet, friendliness bad. The bungalows are cheaply built, no noise insulation. The windows are cheap, when it rains the water comes through the window panes. The villa is then not only over but also under villa. Everything was flooded. The worst was the management, rude, dishonest and didnt really care about you. They even got really cheeky with each other.I have never felt so uncomfortable as in this place. We left earlyFar from Maldives feeling. And who says that in Africa you cant expect more from 5 stars has no idea. There are super 5 star hotels in Zanzibar and they deserve 5 stars. Many hotels with only 3 stars are always better than this hotel.Pool at the Konokono directly at the restaurant, not very inviting.beach was nice. The sea not as blue as the Maldives. Because many write like Maldives 😪.We were told that the boats do not pass close to the water villas. The boats passed close by, full of tourists who paused at the villas with party on board. What I also noticed, the manager finds an excuse for every bad review and blames his guests. What I liked were the monkeys at the resort.

This hotel belongs to the daughter of the former president and enjoys 5 stars without any regard from the authorities on its services, the result is great rooms, a beach that you will not enjoy because no one installs umbrellas or towels ( I was even refused an umbrella by the pool one day because they were supposedly all broken ...), management between neglect and execrable, and food below everything. Final bouquet: they tried to charge us with drinks that we never took during the checkout, without any proof or signature, arbitrarily, and threatened to call the police when we left if we did not pay! My wife was crying in the taxi. For our honeymoon. What a shame. If that is not enough for you to leak, please know that before this incident I thought I would rate 2 stars because of the food which you will get an idea of with the following descriptions:- The first 3 days (out of 8), there was no breakfast buffet (3 biscuits, dry bread and Nutella placed on a table), but a menu on which half of the things were not were not available. I ordered the following English breakfast once: canned mushrooms with still water, half-cooked, Heinz canned beans, instead of bacon, thawed inedible beef bacon. I left 3/4 of the plate, contenting myself with a few fruits.- Evening meals were systematically recovered from the canteen, of which only a few thawed dishes could be qualified as decent. pell-mell: starters the tropical salad (= 1 third of a lettuce leaf, 5 canned corn grains, a watercress leaf, zero seasoning), the tomato soup (= a pressure of concentrated tomato in a tube diluted in water covered with spices to hide the taste, inedible, 3 clients including me sent it away), the multiple entries for recycling the fish from the day before (fish fishcake, fish soup, disgusting, a client was even complained about the freshness because he was sick the next day), the corncake (I no longer have the exact name: canned corn kernels rolled in an ultra-filling fried dough served with supermarket spring roll sauce ( food for animals, moreover the cats had fun around our tables all week ...)- The main dishes offered the choice of catch of the day (= tuna thawed 3 days out of 4 in its more or less edible sauces). The grilled octopus arrived in boiled octopus mixed in rice and other vegetables. The thawed squid in tasteless rubber. At least we had a good laugh with the other customers when we finally had lobster on the menu, the main course of the meal (1 single large shrimp lost in vegetable porridge and white rice).- As for the desserts, we had the right every evening to a salad of fresh fruits (freshly thawed especially), bad luck, my wife found a dead fly there ... Why not take the other unique choice of dessert ? Because they were not only dry and tasteless, but in ridiculous proportions.Ill stop there, the rooms are really great, but thats it, you will have much better options to stay in Zanzibar, so avoid this trap.
