Staffs are super helpful and friendly ! Great and clean room ! Except the toilet, there is a weird smell… Avoid the massage in the hotel. The staff doing the massage was not well-trained for this job. Prepare enough cash to pay, otherwise they’ll add 5% to your bill like most of the places in Zanzibar.
We had a wonderful stay in this amazing hôtel. Everything is perfect. The staff is so professional and kind. You can eat delicious food at the restaurant in front of the beach. Rooms are decorated with a lot of good taste and super clean. The honey moon room is just amazing with a direct access to the beach . The charm of this hotel is that there are very few rooms compared to massive resorts we have seen. Matemwe is a great place to be to visit the island and the fishermen village is just near by.We hope to come back again! Thanks to all the team!
The best hotel in the area of Matemwe Zanzibar! Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, nice food and the best beach we have ever been!
Prices are too high. Rooms are pretty but no air conditioner, no water tanks which means you have to buy your own water all the time. The beach is very small, you cant walk down the beach but in circles. Some locals were protesting caude it was built on their families graveyard. The staff doesnt speak good English, the bar closes too early and the prices are super high. All in all I would never go back. Theres nothing to see or do there. I guess its perfect when youre older and rich.
I think this was a superb hotel. Staff friendly and attentive. Beach was pretty and very quiet (although heavily affected by tide so swimming in sea was possible only a few hours per day). For me this was not an issue as the pool area was lovely and never crowded.Room was spacious, would recommend getting a room with balcony. Staff cleaned room in morning and evening.Hotel food was quite good but a bit more expensive than nearby restaurants (about 12-20 dollars for main course). Breakfast was adequate. We paid about 7-800 USD for seven nights. All in all I would definitely recommend this hotel to anybody staying in eastern Zanzibar.
A good and decent hotel. The staff is very nice and they helped us with everything we needed. The hotel is on the beach and the food is good.
When looking for a place to stay in Zanzibar, I was aiming at a boutique resort of a minimalistic design yet grounded in local architecture. And well, Sunshine Hotel offers just that and so much more: Each house features four studios, but theres enough privacy to not be bothered by the neighbours. The studios themselves are just as big as needed... Sensitive people would probably prefer a bit more privacy for the bathroom area. In the evenings, the housekeeping makes sure that the mosquito nets are in place. However, surprisingly, I havent seen many insects in general. The welcome at the reception is warm; services like massages, diving courses/experiences and snorkeling trips are offered. The restaurant and staff are open and welcoming, the food very decent - in quality and price. The pool is small, but when the sea is just ten steps away, who cares?! The beach itself seems endless and there are plenty other resorts within reach, offering additional F&B opportunities, bars, folkloric performances or live music. We even saw a Swedish destination wedding happening in a hotel a couple of hundred metres up north...So, all in all, Sunshine Hotel is a great opportunity to experience greenery, sun, water and sand in a very pleasant setting.Just, in case you are an impatient person... Be aware that housekeeping can be a bit on the slow side in making your room in the morning, depending on the location and how busy they are.
This is straight-up one of the most beautiful places we have stayed in. This measuring over 5 years of travelling through 31 countries. We were on Zanzibar to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. First Stone Town and then the tentative Jozani Forest/Chwaka Bay Conservation Area.Reading up on Zanzibar we heard that the beaches around Matemwe are supposedly some of the best on the island. At the end of November, we decided to spend one night there during our 10-nights visit to the island. We can now with confidence tell you that the white sand Matemwe beach was one of the most beautiful beaches we saw. After first being treated with fresh fruit juice and towels we were then taken to our room. This reasonably small hotel only has a few two-floor houses, two rooms on top of each other. We had the ground floor beachfront one, the Honeymoon Suite. The room was big with plenty of offload areas and with an open kind of bathroom that we loved. The gem of this room was that it came with its own backyard! We had a beautiful porch with a small garden. In it our own private sunbeds, a private entrance to the beach and to top it all - our own private mini-jacuzzi!The common area was great as well, a green and lush garden with 2 pools, one at the beachfront in the infinity style. We enjoyed the food and drinks in the restaurant, all were great. It feels that we hit the jackpot with the Sunshine Hotel and we wish we would have had the possibility to stay longer. Location, the beach, the lovely staff, all-in-all a solid 5 stars and 100% recommended!
Great place to stay in Matemwe! The local food offered in the restaurant is great and the staff is really friendly. The atmosphere here was super cozy and authentic. I loved that is was a rather small hotel with few rooms. You could always find a sunbed by the pool or at the beach and the view from the pool area was absolutely stunning. Same goes for the view from the restaurant. I can definitely recommend this place!
Loved this hotel! This is an eco-lodge style hotel so the rooms dont have air conditioning or televisions but that just adds to the experience! The rooms and garden is beautiful and its very quite for a relaxing vacation. The staff is super friendly and helpful and they offer free bikes to ride down the beach with and go exploring. Really is a lovely place!
Unfortunately the food wasnt great which made the experience less enjoyable, also not many on site activities so we had to go off site for entertainment. Also as the doors have slits in them, we ended up with ants in our room and bed and also the water in shower is salty so ended up with dry skin. On the plus side the hotel itself if beautiful with 2 lovely pools.
Beautiful location on the white shores and turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Very clean, peaceful with a friendly and efficient staff. We particularly enjoyed the Swahili styled dinner that was offered one of the three days and nights we spent there. And I have developed an appreciation for Koyangi gin! Highly recommend and also recommend the snorkeling experience provided by Dive Zanzibar on the hotel grounds.
We got really lucky picking this beautiful little gem for our Matemwe stay. It is a super cute, clean, well maintained little hotel with simple and spacious rooms that is being run by the friendliest staff you could ever imagine. I would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat. It is truly nice and quiet place that is a deal for everyone who just wants to relax and enjoy some time off in Zanzibar. For everyone else, be assured the quality of the Wi-Fi is strong and accessible from almost anywhere within the compound. Let me tell you writing emails from the pool makes work double the fun.
Highly Recommended, Professional Staff, welcoming and home like atmosphere, clean beach and rooms.
Rooms are ok. Breakfasts are acceptable, lunch can be. Overall no bad.
Great hotel and super location ! Lots of things to do nearby. The restaurant is very good. Only problem : the tap/shower water is salty.
Great overall design, quality finishing throughout the lodge.. Nice little pool when the tide has retreated... Great location on Matemwe white sandy beaches.
The watchmen (masai) was so rude and horrible, really unprofessional. They need to hire a professional company for the security and not uneducated people.
Sunshine life shine. smile shine .happy shine is the best place for holiday for more information about sunshine [email protected]
Super good from food and everything, staff super amazing
Food is very expensive and in small portions. Didnt get ocean view like we booked.
Lovely hotel. Great rooms and friendly staff.

Nice hotel
Everything is real good
Good Hospitality
Sun and beach.
Nice soroundings
Superb room and incredible sea view. But the shower did not work, the partitions in the room are not closed so there is noise all night long. The beach is very polluted. The meal service is very long. But otherwise the sea excursions are very good and the access to the beach is very easy.
DO NOT GO TO THIS HOTEL!!- the rooms are not clean, the whole floor is so dirty that you stick to the floor. The shower had mold, the light switches were brown with dirt (see photos).- All insects can easily get into the rooms as all these doors have wooden slats which are always open! We had a lot of mosquitoes and that in Zanzibar, where you can also get malaria tropica!- Our mosquito net had big holes so we had to put up our own mosquito net.- We got diarrhea from dinner, even though we only ate cooked food!- When we wanted to change hotel and want our money back, the manager wasnt there and we were supposed to wait for her for over 2 hours to maybe get our money back. So we left without getting our money back!!The service and standard of the hotel is perhaps comparable to a 2 star hotel. We paid $240 a night in the honeymoon suite for all this inconvenience! Please go to other hotels, which have a much better standard and are also much cheaper!
After a week of safari in northern Tanzania, the Sunshine proved to be the ideal place to rest, enjoy the beach, massages. And with all due respect to the grumpy, paying attention to hot water in particular, is something that we should take as an example. The staff is considerate, remembers your name, cares that everything is going well. The cocktails are excellent. The restaurant is of very good quality. If I have to come back to Zanzibar, I will not hesitate to book a nice room at Sunshine.Asante!
Initially not the hotel that had been reserved for usBut in the end they offered us 2 massages to be forgivenVery pleasant setting room a little small under the dark palm trees but intimateRestaurant very good breakfast also generous but you have to ask for everything (even towels)2 swimming pools to renovate but very pleasantHotel located by the ocean with deckchairTop staffWiFi which cuts a littleThe only problem is to ask for water for the shower in the evening
WOW! What a sweet gem. We found out about the Sunshine Hotel by chance through Tripadvisor and spent two weeks there in June 2013. In summary: Very lovingly maintained, small resort near Matemwe. You live in a house which is divided into 4 apartments. We definitely recommend an apartment on the 1st floor because of the sea view. In the morning there is a delicious breakfast in the small restaurant with local fruits (especially passion fruit), muesli, bread rolls and good coffee. We didnt have dinner included, but we still used it more often because its just so wonderfully comfortable to sit there and because the food tastes great. You have two - rather small - pools, but that is more than enough, since the beach and sea are right in front of the resort. The beach has it all - snow-white, very natural and endless! An absolute highlight. By the way, the pictures have not been post-processed!A little tip: at the reception you can rent bicycles and at low tide drive for miles across the beach! We cant really compare, as weve only been here, but would highly recommend the resort, especially to people looking for peace and quiet. It should be noted that there is not much on offer around the resort apart from 1-2 small restaurants, which can be reached by the beach - for parties and loud music you should opt for another resort!By the way - there are 1-2 smaller African villages very close by. We gave the children our pads and pens as a present, which the little ones were so happy about! So be sure to take something with you when you go on vacation! :)
Beautiful location by the sea. Excellent service!
Super hotel its strong: the calm the hygiene the welcome a plus for the kitchen cocktails to recommend for those looking for calm and meet in love far from the crowds as in the north! The staff listens carefully again, thank you.
Great stay at the Sunshine Hotel! We originally booked at the Sunshine Marine Lodge but were transferred to the Sunshine Hotel (the first being closed due to maintenance). We were in a sea view suite at a discounted price due to the very low traffic period ... everything was perfect:- sublime rooms (huge bed)- adorable, attentive staff who even spray mosquito repellent in the evening on the mosquito nets (very few mosquitoes in September)- hearty breakfast at will- Very good location- dives organized with the nearby club and transfer includedWe are delighted with our stay!
I really liked everything - rooms, restaurant, drinks, massage, service. I also liked the beach. The only remark - the pool looks a little dirty, so I did not want to swim in it. But overall it is one of the best hotels at this price in Mathematwa.
We spent 5 wonderful days at this hotel. Excellent welcome, we had a room with a magnificent sea view, the breakfast very good and at will. Thanks to Prisca and Akida for their welcome, they were very caring. The only small downside would be the quality of the mattress, very hard to the point we get up with pain. A bit isolated hotel.
Very clean rooms and well-kept area. Delicious food and friendly staff.
We did not stay in the hotel, but we dined three nights in a row at the hotel restaurant. very good dish, pleasant service, clean and beautiful place with a menu that changes every day. Price a little high but we leave satisfied.
If you are looking for luxury and tranquility this is not the place to go. All night long there is noise: noise of fan noise of waves and birds (like crows) croaking in your ears. The bungalows are not insulated, all the rooms have openings so that mosquitoes can enter and exit as they wish. Impossible to sleep . The wifi is fluctuating and off at night as well as the electricity. For hot water wait 10 minutes after turning on a switch.the swimming pool is more of a jacuzzi than a swimming pool, when at the beach be careful there are tides like in Brittany. Minimum breakfast and totally tasteless. It’s true that people are nice.If this is all right for you then dont hesitate to come or find something else.
Wonderful! Wonderful! moreover we stayed 5 days out of season the calm was in place. The room was superb and every day the staff was attentive, room made in the morning and benevolence of the staff or the mosquito net was installed the evening before our arrival. The meals were hearty and delicious. The staff friendly and welcoming !!! the local population a small fishing village where life was good! heavenly place no complaints and thank you again to all the team for your warmth, your smile and your kindness that have contributed greatly to our good life and our well being! I highly recommend!!!!
Wake up every morning around 4 a.m. then 5 a.m. with Arabic prayers. In addition there is no air conditioningResults 3 really horrible nightsApart from the rather complicated nightsThe hotel is very welcoming it has a view and direct access to the beach, there is also a way to swim in the z pressing pools in the hotel.Wi-Fi only available at reception.
Perfect honeymoon suite but in the hotel restaurant: HELP !!! Mind-blowing prices absolutely not justified. . and dishes not terrible as to the servers: we have the unpleasant impression of disturbing them. ... A roof top !!!! poor breakfast
A heavenly place! Delicious food, friendly and helpful staff! And very clean!
Fantastic place for summer and winter :) Atmospheric comfortable rooms, nice restaurant and atmosphere. I recommend
Perfect hotel by the sea everything is top for 68 € really nothing to complain about. We are in June we dont have air conditioning but we really dont need itJust hot water is scarce.
Worst experience of my life. The shower was not working and the only room available cost more than 100 € more per night (our was already 150 € per night). Instead of changing rooms, we were told that if we wanted to change rooms, we had to pay € 100 more or wait until a room at the same price becomes available. They therefore left us 2 nights in a room without a working shower before we moved to another room. Eating it is unprofessional and daring. The prices in the restaurant are exorbitant and the food barely adequate. It is better to go to eat 5 minutes from there by walking on the beach at Binjabir. We obviously do not recommend this establishment.
The facility is very nice and clean. The only thing I have to complain about is the food. It is very bland in my opinion and repeats itself every week. Bar staff is very friendly and accommodating.
Original.. Nice.. Good service
Small hotel, a few rooms in an exotic garden, direct access to a huge white sand beach, a lagoon, and few people around. Two swimming pools and a restaurant complete the picture, and the intense and warm sun.Close to perfection
Hotel very good. Very nice service. The food is excellent. Clean and nice rooms with balcony. Nice pool. White fine sandy beach. Beach not suitable for swimming. Hotel information necessarily read. Otherwise a sure good choice.
Small hotel with 16 rooms, the setting is nice the food is excellent it is very quiet, only I think that for the prices charged it could avoid paying water during meals.
Beautiful hotel. Very nice staff. Many attentions over the days improving still this feeling of corner of paradise
Among the most beautiful hotels Ive had the chance to rub elbows, splendid scenery, excellent service, lost on a white sand beach as far as the eye can see (and 10 minutes walk from a French diving center), what more ?!
Beautiful hotel, little room so few people, ideally placed, the honeymoon suite is wonderful with a very large room, a jacuzzi, a small garden overlooking the sea, the classic rooms are very nice too, it is very clean, the staff is very kind, welcoming, helpful, the dishes are very good, very well presented, opportunity to do a lot of leisure (diving, quad, horse, boat, tours ...) but also to rest in this quiet and quiet haven.
Very good service, tastefully decorated rooms and a great beach
Pleasant terrace with two pools and a beautiful view of the sea!
Superb with great attention to detail, excellent accommodation and kitchen
The REPUTATION OF MEDUZAS beach always, impossible to bathe in the sea
Very well
Place good, expensive, water problems.
This is a lovely place :-) I recommend it
Not so expensive and very nice !!
Relaxing, beautiful location.
