TZIVA is an organisation that wants to help the people of Zanzibar, and that is exactly what they do!I really wanted to feel that I could bring something too and Rajab and Khamis found the right project for me. They provide projects that you are interested in and have the skills to do it. An amazing experience with fond memories of the children and adults I taught.I spent 3 weeks with TZIVA, not long enough ! Rajab and Khamis provide an excellent service from the moment I was picked up from the airport until I got onto my flight back home and always quick to reply to any questions or needs. They also have great suggestions about places to visit and things to do on the island. I loved walking round the streets of Stonetown and felt absolutely safe. After my experience, I proposed TZIVA to my students at the University where I work, who were looking for voluntary work abroad. Over the last 2 years 2 groups have worked with TZIVA and all of them said they had had an amazing time and felt they had given something to the Zanzibar community.TZIVA is a small, local organisation and is really helping the people of Zanzibar. I’m still in contact with them and hopefully plan another visit in the future. So if you too want to help and have a wonderful experience then I highly recommend TZIVA. Go for it!

I went to Zanzibar to do a 3 week volunteering in health care. After the outbreak of COVID-19 I was the first and only volunteer at TZIVA. And it was absolutely worth it! While the rest of the world goes crazy about the pandemic, Tanzania somehow managed to keep the virus very low and carry on with normal life. This was not only an opportunity to escape from the whole drama for a while, furthermore it was an amazing and memorable experience! From the very first beginning Rajab and Hannah were very welcoming and immediately made me feel at home at the TZIVA accommodation, which is based in the middle of Stone Town. They were very pleased to help me with everything I needed, to serve me deliciouse food every day and to show me some of the most beautiful places on Zanzibar! Even though I was the only volunteer during this time, I never felt alone! Rajab showed me many stunning places all over the island and was very considered to make me feel the most comfortable, which I definitely was.During the 3 weeks of volunteering I worked in Tawakal hospital, it is located a little outside of Stone Town, but easy to reach by Dala Dala (the local bus). This gave me an unforgettable and tremendous insight of a local hospital. The probably most exciting day was the day I could assist in the operating theatre during numerous surgeries. Aside from that, I also got an unique chance to be integrated into the culture of Zanzibar and the kidness of the very open minded and easygoing locals! Even if the communication wasn’t always easy (due to the fact, that their english isn’t too good and my Swahili even worse) I felt very estimated and utterly accepted.A big thanks to TZIVA for this amazing experience!

Volunteering with TZIVA is an amazing and unique experience!Rajab and Khamis are carefully selecting local projects thanks to their knowledge of the community. The grassroot organisation TZIVA is managed by them on a very personal level and from the bottom of their hearts.I had the pleasure to be a TZIVA volunteer in an orphanage for one week after my travel holidays providing general support and a course on hygiene. I was warmly welcomed and stayed in TZIVA office where it feels like a family - generally I felt safe and on top did something good for the society. The short and intense week convinced me that TZIVA is doing a great job and deserves big times support. Even after several years we are still in touch.I hope that more people will find this small, special NGO to make a similar experience with such meaningful and well selected work.

I chose to do a 3 week volunteer program with TZIVA in the summer of 2019, and I can say that it was hands down one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I was slightly nervous and reluctant at first, as I had never travelled so far away from home on my own. I was welcomed into a very homely accommodation, and helped to settle in quickly. I got to mingle with the locals, and got to experience the authentic way of life in Zanzibar. I was astounded by the kindness and sincerity of people on the island, and the beauty of the beaches. Rajab was super supportive and I could not have felt any safer and more at ease from the moment I was picked up from the airport until I got onto my flight back home. Throughout the duration of my stay, he was always reachable to respond to any queries I had, regardless of the time of day. This was very important and meant a lot to me, as I was a first time volunteer travelling to an unknown country/culture. Everything was handled in a very timely and professional manner. Besides that, Rajab and Khamis had wonderful ideas and suggestions about places to visit and things to do on the island, and facilitated many tours for me, that I might have struggled to organise myself. I highly recommend TZIVA to anyone who is thinking of going to volunteer abroad- dont think twice, just go for it and I guarantee you will be planning your second trip to Zanzibar a short while later (like I am!).
