The history here was rich. A large cathedral built by the English who sold slaves literally at the pulpit and then abolished slavery. Dungeons for slaves located just downstairs. Incredible feeling here.
Could not help but shed a tear looking at the deplorable conditions under which slaves were kept. In an underground manhole that can barely hold 10 people, were 75 people! So emotional 😭Overal, it’s quite a historical site. You will learn lots of things.
Outside the cathedral in the grounds, there is the moving Slave Memorial, which stands as a reminder of the past. We also visited the East Africa Slave Trade Exhibit, which features a series of detailed informative panels to commemorate the abolition of slavery and preserve the legacy of the individuals who were brought there and sold. At the end of the exhibit, there are the former slave chambers where they were imprisoned in terrible conditions before being sold.
Gorgeous building with so many interesting bits of information about the bishop and David Livingston. Coloumns in the church are famously upside down and the ceiling is rarely shaped like a barrel. The baptizing pillar is placed where an aqueduct was said to run and the bodies of slaves were reportedly dumped and sent out to sea. This church allows you past the kneeling podium which is rare and the bishops tomb is located above. The stained glass windows are even dedicated to dr Livingston in part and the Organ is functional and original
Was able to play the 140 year old pipe organ! that was a highlight!!!
They have mass, with crazy preaching, in a microphone, at TWO IN THE MORNING ! And it lasts for 2 hours. Not sure religion is an excuse for such disrespect.
A beautiful cathedral built on the ancient slave prison of the bygone era. The museum gives enough information on the slavery and reminds us how lucky we are for not being born in that generation of sorrow and misery. This started from narrow minded British thinking that racially they are superior than others with out knowing anything about grand civilisation of Egyptians that vanished due to harsh environments. Its also a reminder to humanity that when Egypt was far ahead in civilisation, rest of the planet was in the dark ages of hunter gathering across Europe and Asia.Though British started slavery with guns, they ended peacefully.
This was the most touching place of all the places I visited. It is a cathedral built at the former slave trade marketplace, next to it is the actual slave trade chambers. The cathedral was built by mostly slaves after the banning of slave trade in1873. These slaves could not trace or be returned to their former countries so were looked after by missionaries ..the history is heartbreaking.
Christ Church is an Anglican cathedral in Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania. It belongs to the Anglican Church of Tanzania. It is a landmark historical church, as well as one of the most prominent examples of early Christian architecture in East Africa.
Historical church in Zanzibar Stone Town. The church of two top minarets and big intrance door whic allows to sea inside of fance even you dont enter. The church is located in narrow paths in Stone Town of Zanzibar
Nice source of information when you wish to understand how slavery and slave trade went about. From all over East and Central Africa and certainly southern Africa.. all slaves were gathered here before they could be sold..
The center of stone town. I wish I had a guide to explain things to me and I could only stay for about 15 minutes. It is a bit confusing to get to, as you have to go though the other slavery exhibit. Statues outside are very powerful.
Its Historical Church which stand where slave market was.Its five dollars 5$ to purchase a ticket to visit, Im working at there as a tour guide at the FORMER SLAVE MARKET SITE, for those who has resident permit 5000 tsh is their entrance fee and 3000 tsh for TANZANIAN.
Just a history book about slavery printed on the wall in a nit maintained building. Worth visiting as there are maybe not much more better places in stone town.
Zanzibar has deep history of Arab, German, English colonies...Anglican cathedral is quite stunning historic site. Totally must visit.
This is a beautiful church with a very interesting history. You will get a full tour and the backstory from your guide when you pay for the Slave Quarters tour, which I recommend.
Part of it is built on slave under ground holes ...and the other side has history of the slave trade...good tourist place to learn alot.
A good place where slave market was taking place on that time
The oldest church in east and central African built around more than 2 centuries ago by English scottish missionaries.
Biggest church on Zanzibar. It contains one of the only 2(!) organs in whole Africa. The other one being in South Africa. The tour is included in the Slave Pits Tour. (5$)
5 dollars (11.5k) in 08/2017.Church+slavery monument+slavery underground rooms. No need to give a big tip to the guide.
OK without the former Glory but it seems that the cathedral visit is used to push visitors to buy a ticket for the slave exhibition.
Sad but interesting history. Beautiful church. Worth the $5 as long as you get a guide and tip him.
Nice place, but you have to pay for the entrance. I dont like, if you have to pay for visit some church or cathedral...
Nice place, worth visiting.Dont pay 5 dollars to the scammers at the entrance, pay only for the ticket ($5)

A very special building, the Anglican Cathedral, which stands on the site of the largest slave market in the past. About 50,000 slaves were sold here each year. It was traded here on inhuman conditions. They were often flogged. As proof that everything was canceled, a Christian cathedral was built on this site. It was built for seven years and it is not known exactly what style.
The place is probably the most energetic in the city, a monument to slaves here on the territory, plus a beautiful English cathedral, very interesting architecture, an arched door to the cathedral, a special atmosphere inside, like in all cathedrals of this kind. The entrance is paid, I dont remember exactly how long, but it is definitely worth going in and taking a walk here for 30 minutes.
