Just visit, and try as much as possible attending one of the scheduled masses. You will never regret. The fact that the church serves the minority Catholic christians who are in Zanzibar plus foreigners, mostly tourists and expatriates. This church, which is also the Cathedral, is sandwiched in Old Zanzibar town, which is said to host more than 100 mosques in just 2 square kilometres area. Both Christians and Muslims live peacefully as brothers and sisters.I attended one of their Eucarist Mass on Thursday evening, I felt blessed.
Its nice view, beautiful and its story behind this picture its so huge compare to the picture itself, a Muslim country where you see a Church and Mosque on the same street.. this is actual something to learn from. Religious, Politics or any other thing should not be the reason to divide us, or separate one another,.. We have to leave and stay together as a family, this is how we are going to build our society, economical, and social..
This is historical building more than a century, it is worshipping place. It is worpping place, still they welcome you at anytime the building is cool and designed by French, its architecture is amazing. Also located just beside the big mosque. Possible both building are 100 years old. They conduct mass everyday from 06h00-07h00 only Sunday they conduct from 07h00-09h00 and again from 09h00-12h00. The place is a safe and quiet ☺️
A very important cathedral , a must to visit. Build when the Sultans were openminded we presume.
Beautiful church with superb stained glass windows. The priests were very kind to open the doors of the cathedral to allow us to go in & visit. Very serene & wonderful...
Its located on the Ocean View, easily accessible by all means of transportation, road and water, the architecture of the church building is magnificent and ancient, if you are a Catholic believer, it offers a serene environment for prayers and meditation, all catholic religious services can be got from there.
A must see and there is a road that can provide an excellent photo opportunity close by. Locals say access is possible but mostly during mass on a Friday. It is one of only two Christian churches in the whole of stone town.
Its not a church that would make you go in awe thats for sure. And with the renovations done a few years ago the place was made worst.English mass is offered everyday at 7am for those wanting to go. On Sundays there is a high mass in Swahili at 9am.It used to be a beautiful building but sadly not anymore. Free to enter though if the gate is open which mostly it isnt.
The population of Zanzibar is 99 percent Muslim, but this St Josephs Cathedral gives a different perception in a history of Zanzibar, since this church was built between 1893-1898 has a very significant impact to the people of Zanzibar, Christianity has became undeniable faith in the middle of Zanzibar which is 99% Muslim...
One of the old historical heritage building which is still functional. Its among early chapel ever built by colonists, as it is a Catholic premise. Here it was a mass of 50th jubilee of Nun/Sista Gemma.
Is an important historical building located in the Baghani area of Stone Town, Zanzibar. It was built by French missionaries between 1893 and 1898, and the plans were drawn by the same French architect who designed the cathedral in Marseilles, France. The defining characteristic of the cathedral are its twin spires (similar to those of Marseille’s church) which are prominent elements of the Stone Town’s skyline and can be easily spotted from a distance off the coast. The cathedral interior is painted with murals from the Old Testament. The tiles and stained glass windows were all imported from France. The cathedral is in regular use by Stone Town’s Catholic community. There are several masses held each Sunday and occasionally on weekdays.Ablution facilities need a little work and it can get a little crowded during peak times but a must see when in Stone Town.
One of the oldest historic church in stone town. Not available for public visit but you can access during mass hours or when the gate it’s open.
Nice,beautiful Catholic church in Zanzibar
Great historic site of a Catholic church on predominantly Muslim Zanzibar. Also telling that both believers always lived together in peace
Very interesting and quiet for prayers 🙏
Among the oldest churches Zanzibar, very well known for tourism. As it is loaded with history far back 18 century.
Beautiful building and welcoming... English spoken mass at 07:00 each Sunday.

Beautiful cathedral. A place of living worship. On Sundays, Masses will be celebrated at 7.00 a.m. (in English), 9.00 a.m., 11.15 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. (the rest in Swahili). The 9 oclock mass in Swahili is beautiful - full church, perfect choir. It lasted 2.5 hours.Mass at 7am, without additional attractions, lasted 1 hour.During the week, masses only in the mornings - at 6.00 (in English) and 6.30 (in Swahili).
Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph was built in Zanzibar by French missionaries from 1893 to 1898. This beautiful building is surrounded by the densest urban development of Stone Town, although the spiers of the cathedral are slightly visible from the sea and from the embankment. The cathedral has beautiful architecture, it is built from local coral stone, modeled on the cathedral of Marseille. The cathedral is the center of the diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Zanzibar. The building is very beautiful, a must-see while walking around the city.
Its a very beautiful building, its a pity that there is such a dense building around, it is simply impossible to move away and admire it from the side, I think it is very cool to live in a hotel with a view of it, but in general these streets around it give some charm to this place. The central entrance is closed, tourists can see that they do not enter, there is an entrance that is invisible to their
- A beautiful Oasis in the middle of the alleys of Stown Town.- Very colorful cathedral, it clashes inside, from a French architect.- The exterior aspect is superb and seen from afar the arrows stand out against the city sky.- On the other hand it is paying (paying to visit a place of worship ...) and you need a guide.
A spectacular #facade, we couldnt visit it inside
Of course, we must try hard to find the entrance inside, but still recommend it! A great deal of confidence to get to the rehearsal of the local choir, sit in the cool and listen to the song. Inside the cathedral is very nice!
Part of the historical framework of slavery and its marketing on the island. Quite hard to see in the conditions they were
One of the most important historical buildings in Stone Town. The building is well maintained, and you can see the frescoes of the fusion of Catholicism and Africa. It is worth a visit.
The pretty Roman Catholic cathedral of Saint Joseph is one of the most important historical buildings in Stone Town, Zanzibar. The building is well-kept and worth a visit. The church is used by the local Catholic community and choral songs are often heard there. The facility is located in small, narrow streets and is therefore difficult to photograph.
Nice cathedral that stands above the narrow streets of Stone Town, which causes a rather peculiar effect. In spite of its greatness it is difficult to find; you have to find the right alley.
Very beautiful church on a 98% Muslim island. Here the religions mix without worry
