These falls are beautiful and the hike to get there is around 40 mins from the parking area. It was very sad to see that tourists and tourist operators did not seem to care enough about protecting the environment as plastic bottles were visible throughout the hike and at the bottom of the water fall. Locals overseeing the falls were instead very good at charging the entrance fee but not eager enough to tell people not to throw the trash away during the hike ( they only clean once a week, on Mondays, which is clearly not enough). Tourists should be more mindful and keep their trash until they are back from the trail where they can put it away. I took a picture of all the bottles my group picked up on our way back from the water fall.Unfortunately we ran out of hands and space in our bags to pick them all up so if you want to do the extra mile, bring your bag and collect them too: we only have one planet Earth!
One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Tanzania. A great hike and a great place to connect with nature. The water are really cold but if youre up to it its great! I recommend staying at Shimbwe meadows guesthouse. That way you can stay away from town, and you can plan more hikes and cultural tours in the area.
The place is beautiful, of course, but Id like to write about experience of going there on your own. its doable, but involve a bit of a hassle, even if its close to Moshi. cheapest way is to grab a dala dala described with MOSHI - URU - MRUWIA til the end of the route & from there walk a bit to the main waterfall office. bajaj or boda boda are more convenient option, but the former will have some hard time to go all the way up, as the road is rather bumpy. both options can be negotiated down to ~ 20.000 TZS with waiting time, but its better to be precise about how long will it last (up to 3-4 hours if one plan to visit both waterfall & home-made coffee workshop).now - once in the waterfall office you have to pay a fee of 10.000 TZS per person + obligatory guide - another 10.000 TZS. seems like this obligatory status has been made up by local youngsters, who are making living out of it. its hard to discuss whether its a scam or some entreprenous community action, but its not a matter of contemplation - if you wont take a guide, they wont let you in. it seems like the only space for negotiation is to lower this fee, while traveling in bigger group.visiting home-made coffee workshop (lets not call it plantation) is another 5000 TZS per pax, which is fair enough. it consists of watching the process and sipping a freshly brewed cuppa. of course, selling overpriced coffee packs, roasted by a local aunt is something you cant avoid in the end.to sum up, what youre paying independently is only a fraction of organised tours in the area, which are priced between 40 and 100 (sic!) USD. going solo, extra adventure is free :)
Nice waterfall but...Even though we came with our licensed guide the entrace guys forced us to take an extra guide from the village which for sure charges extra (after 10.000TZN entrance fee). The guy did not even speak english, very bad performance and we felt once more like tourism here is just to get as much money as possible from the white cash cows. Great!
You need to pay money to the government while receiving nothing in return. No signs to the waterfall, nothing. You are also forced into hiring a guide even if you dont want to. It is not needed, so easy to find it by yourself. The waterfall itself is very nice and beautiful. Unfortunately very poorly managed and the local people have only one goal: extract as much money out of every Mzungu as possible.
Amazing experience. Book with Twanga touring for a good price and a guide who speaks English well. We decided to go up to the village where the hike starts by public transport and that was a fun experience in of itself. The guide met is in Moshi to accompany us. He gave us a coffee roasting experience and good local food was included. 5 stars!
An incredible place that is a must see when in Kilimanjaro Region. The hike to the waterfalls is not so challenging but on a rainy day can get quite slippery so watch out and walk on the grass instead of the muddy road. Get a local guide to take you there as you might easily get lost in one of the several diverging paths. The waterfall itself is magniticent! Extremely powerful and makes you feel so tiny, exhilerated and humbled all at the same time. You can swim there but at your own risk as it doesnt have such a huge basin like Udzungwa for instance. Its also a great place for a photoshoot.
Incredible day at materuni waterfall. Named after the local tribe of the area. Absolutely get a guide as it is inexpensive and they enhance the experience. After the waterfall have your guide take you to coffee plantation and local bar. The people there are the nicest you will ever meet. You are immediately treated like family and have inexpensive gifts you can buy to remember the trip. Try banana wine!! Zeek was my guide a nickname.
Very beautful walk to the waterfall. The waterfall was amazing. You can take a dip.
The waterfalls are amazing but again , almost like everywhere else in the country - the people there will try to screw you up and make you pay for a guide you don’t want or need. Be aware.
Best waterfalls around there. Definitely go there if you have time
The place is so amazing and there you can swimming and after you take a cap of coffee for enjoyment
Took a group from work for a tour at the Waterfalls on Sunday morning. The weather was pretty good. There is a about 6 km walk from where we left the car. We started with a coffee tour and then the falls. We used local guides.
Unbelievable beauty nature. You will drop down to the bottom to see one of the wonderful places. Its an adventure for young people. A bit challenge for old people they can manage. Down you will see a very beautiful view for the waterfalls. When you pass front of waterfalls you will feel very cold because water coming from the ice on the top of Kilimanjaro mountain. The place is great also for a group journey.
Nice tall waterfall but getting pricey. Its 10,000tsh for the entry fee but theyre charging double now for the guide they oblige you to take, although if you insist you might be able to go by yourself (its not complicated, just use a proper map). You can get to the village by dalla-dalla from Moshi (1000tsh). Its actually much cheaper than companies want to charge you for (about 50$).
Awesome waterfall but be extremely aware of local guides. They may leave you stranded. Arrange the trip beforehand and pay afterwards. Such a great place ruined by corruption
Amazing waterfall!!! Possibly the best day of my year. Swimming in the icy cold water from the glaciers of Kilimanjaro - bloody freezing - but what a rush. I would definitely do it again.
Loved the experience ❤️. Its not so far from when the buses stop but for a better experience ensure that you are wearing comfortable shoes.
Materuni waterfalls Is one of the longest falls within Kilimanjaro area. Its located few kilometers from Moshi town . Slight hike through some homesteads and coffee plantations will lead you there. Its advisable to take guide with you from the entrance . Also combine it with a coffee tour and taste some banana wine :)
A short day of great experience !
This place is amazingThe sound of the waterfall and the water flowing in the streams below. The view is amazingIts very quietEspecially when theres no people around
Materuni waterfall is found within Moshi area. This very impressive Waterfall is one of the tallest in the area, spewing crystal clear glacier water 70m into its basin. The beautiful path leading to Materuni Waterfall is located 2500m above sea level.
Place is cool! Should go there when visit Kilimanjaro... Approximately 30km then you walking like 30min to be there
Extremely worth it. No need for a guide, you just need to pay 10,000 TZS per person to the village development authority, basically extortion.
As tourists we should take only photographs and leave only footprints. A bit too much rubbish on the trail.
The place is very attractive because it is naturally made feature and it is also well preserved by the villagers
I have seen nothing like this before! Get into lap of nature & forget yourself. Lovable spot to visit.
This little hidden gem is beautiful! Loved interacting with a few of the locals and drinking some banana beer!!!

After a bumpy journey, you are welcomed by a horde of young people. These dashing fellows have their own asking price for everything here. Depending on the tour, you can pay a price between $ 15 and $ 120. a visit to the waterfall is only possible with a local guide. We paid 40,000 Tanzanian shillings for two people. It was our guides birthday that day, but were not sure whether its his birthday every day. The waterfall itself is really pretty and the way to get there can be done without any problems. TFT (Tanzanian flexible time) takes about 30 minutes from the office of the waterfall. On the way to the waterfall we were offered all kinds of things to buy. From tea to cups to a poor captive chameleon.
Extremely beautiful place! To recommend starting from Moshi, 3 hours of beautiful tour. At the beginning of a street then only one way. At the end of the road you will be taken to a local for 5,000 who will lead you to the waterfall.Nature told me the animals showed me his house and his family. We even drank banana wine. Do not drink bananabier do that yourself and there is a risk of bacteria. For 1000 Im back to Moshi with the public bus - was great.
The waterfall is worth seeing, but on the wayEveryone in the party threw away their shoes and pants in mudThe road was unpleasant. Its like getting an entrance fee and filling your pockets
A very nice and quite high waterfall, the water is fresh, so you can bathe to cool down a bit.
Stunning waterfalls located near Kilimanjaro. Ideal for a day trip before / after climbing! It can be reached by car on group or private excursions. The walking route is about 45-60 minutes from the point where the car is left, and it is not difficult. Depending on the time of year, you can access the base of the falls or not (depending on the rains). One can bathe without problems under the waterfalls, although the water is very cold and there is some current (still worth it). Many times the tour is usually associated with a coffee tasting that is also worthwhile. The prices for the excursion vary, depending on the operator.
Very nice just in the Materuni village near the town of Moshi. For the tourist who arrives he discovers the culture of the coffee exposed by the young guides of the corner
They bred tourists for money .... arrived at the waterfall, began to ask for money, for which it is not clear ... I do not recommend !!!!
The waterfall is an interesting tourist attraction, access from the parking lot is a pleasant walk during which you can enjoy the local flora and fauna.
The waterfall in the village of Materuni, at about 2,000 meters above sea level on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, is an indescribable sight of nature. In the surroundings, you can enjoy the ritual of brewing coffee grown on the plantations by the local population.
Felt a little difficult. But its really worth it. About 30 minutes to get there. Bring good shoes!
A fairly short walk you arrive at a very beautiful place that even has a monkey really close to the waterfall to sit on.
Great place, it is worth so far to go on mountainous trails. Of course the water will cool :)
A beautiful waterfall. A great trip.
Fantastic place
