Review №1

St. Marys Secondary School at Mazinde Juu has 600 young women in residence; the educational program is the six-form British system. The school consistently scores in the top 10 among Tanzanian high schools in the annual competitive examination. It graduated its first class in 1993.The physical facility is an impressive array of multistory dorms, classrooms and large structures for dining, assembly and other purposes. The buildings are surprisingly sophisticated for having been constructed by local workers without the benefit of anything more than hand tools. Additional buildings are continually going up.The school was founded by Father Damian Milliken, a Benedictine missionary from Elmira, NY USA who has been in Tanzania since 1960. Father Damian designs the buildings and supervises the construction. While Father Damian still oversees the operation, the administrators and faculty members are almost entirely members of the Catholic order of Sisters of Our Lady of the Usumbaras. A number of the sisters have earned advanced degrees in the United States under a program arranged by Father Damian.
