This was an interesting visit and I am grateful for the great hospitality. I had a lot of time to take in the knowledge and time to take pictures as well. The Iringa Boma is only a 3 minutes walk from the clock tower and offers a great history of Iringa and its people. Also on the top floor you can buy a beautiful woven basket and support the ladies that pour their hearts out into doing this. The Boma also offers a cafe and a souvenir shop that I found quite adequate. Be sure to visit the neighboring craft shops too 😊

The Boma in one of the oldest remaining buildings in Iringa, constructed around 1900 by the German colonial regime to serve as a military hospital. German colonial architecture combined African, Swahili and European styles. After the First World War the British made it their regional administrative centre. From Tanzania’s independence in 1961 until 2014 it was in use as Regional and District administration office offering civil services. Beginning in 2014 the building was completely renovated and restored to its original design as part of the fahari yetu Project under the University of Iringa. After being re-opened in 2016, Iringa Boma now fulfils its function as a regional museum and cultural centre.Reflects the history and local culture of Iringa in its exhibits. To call this building boma is pure fantasy and no fact! I think its done to make it interesting. The original boma of the Germans is situated behind the Police Station.
