It is the best and oldest History Department in Eastern and Central Africa offering BA in History, BA History in Diplomatic Studies, BA in History and Political Science, BA in Archives and Records Management, Master of Arts in History (by coursework and by thesis), and PhD in History (by thesis).The History Department also has an international historical journal known as Tanzania Zamani. It is published biennially.Has vibrant faculty, young and old, established and in-the-making like Professors Fredrick Kaijage and Yusufu Lawi; Drs. Masebo, Sumbai, Sadock, Chuhila, Magoti, Ambindwile and Zotto; and junior teaching assistants on training like Edward, Ndomba, Nyanto, Abia, Komba, Kangalawe, Mchome, Kifyasi, Marmo, Onyiego and Magani.
