I must admit it was a bit embarrassing to visit the museum with a friend who was visiting ( local charges are 2500 foreigners 12,500, they take mobile money when we visited their network was down so they charged us an extra 1000!)The only note worthy exhibit was the cradle of man however most places lakes proper explanations the staff were quite unfriendly and plain rude it felt as though they were there against their wishes. There were lots of cobwebs and dust around most display cabinets. In some places it was really hot even the fans were switched off.In other exhibits there was a repetition of pictures. The museum is filled with newspaper clippings and pictures which can easily be viewed for free on Google. There is alot of maintainance work going on and hopefully that will bring some positive changes. Its a shame that we are a country filled with history and culture and yet our museum is in the state that it is
The national Museum has SO much potential. As a history teacher I was underwhelmed, happy and low key embarassed by the place all at once. On a positive note impressed by their early man exhibition. Its a bit awkward have the U.S embassy bombing memorial in the complex as important as it is. It felt out of place at our national museum. An appropriate place for it would be the actuallocation of the former embassy. The staff at the museum are pretty rude and unprofessional which is not surprising for Dar. So dont expect qualified staff to help with you with anything. They seem like they’d rather be unemployed. The vehicle exhibition needs to be indoors as the salty ocean air is deteriorating the cars massively. I was horrified to say the least as those cars have incredible national value let alone a heafty price tag.The old museum building is one of my favorite buildings in the country was sad to see it in astate of neglect despite the Turks sponsoring its maintanance. This museum is suppose to be a relfection of how far we have come as a nation. And hope the government will prioritize and hire qualified designers and curators to bring this glorious place to its greatness. There are many qualofied Tanzanians that would help make this place a place of institutional memory and a reflection of the past to inspire future. My five stars are for the potential this great place has.
It covers large part of Tanzanian history, from the medieval to modern period. Theres a section of evolution and natural history which might be specially interesting for minors. Very helpful staff and fair prices.
BEWARE!!!People selling tickets at the museum are scammers. We realized days later that we were charged double! We visited on a Sunday afternoon. When you arrive the person selling the tickets will be very nice to you and explain you that they take payments only by card but the system is not working. You will be told to just go on with your visit and pay afterwards, and if the system is still not working they can take cash. After the visit, the payment system was still not working so we were asked to pay in cash...24 000 shillings for two persons (just the visit, no guide, no extras). For a moment I tought that it is quite a lot for such a museum, but nevertheless I did not argue and paid in cash. Of course no tickets or receipts were given...it is clear in whose pockets the money ended up...Totally dishonest persons working there. They should be ashamed of what they are doing. Scamming people in the countrys National museum! This is not the first time a visitor ia overcharged (see other reviews on Google / Tripadvisor).
Nice place! Lots of history- Local, east Africa and our human history. Attractive place with really nice historical pictures, statues, arts gallery. if you like to watch national geographic or discovery tv channel, This is the place for you. You can around 3 hours here. This museum is very cool, i Loved it.... ❤
I have visited the national museum, its a cool place where you get to see historical things. Me and my friend really liked there and hopefully other friends gonna come visit. I liked the colonial cars which were being used, Royce Louise and the remaining skull of the elephant, the chief materials, the rock area and the place where you roll something for a bingo maybe and slavery history. Everything was lit, they have cool receptionist. You can see it on the photos. Thank you
Good place to understand the history of our nation with respect to our culture. This house should have a specific policies that ensure cultural preservation and the spirit to know about the background of our nation this can be easily formulated through various published journals, magazines and through various media this will motivate and increase patriotism to the citizen to take time and go to national meseum and house of culture to explore a lot but also for foreigners will be in a good way to come and exploring various information thats going to add the values of foreign exchange and exposure of our cultures activities to the world wide.
I like the rock art room. thousands years ago. it is amazing . and there is a very big big tree.it is a very nice tree. but mosquitos a lot . its better prepare before go visiting
A sad place! Tanzania is beautiful and rich, and yet, the national museum is empty. The only thing worth seeing is actually the huge tree in the center of the museum yard. It seems the museum personnel is occupied with catering rather than curating the museum. How is this possible?!
Third visit over a period of 12 yrs, this time with my two young kids... They used to have two exhibition halls displaying animal and dinosaurs, unfortunately they have disappeared. A scrap metal T-Rex in the yard is impressive, as are the bones of a sperm whale. Also, the exhibition about early man, displaying the Laetoli footprints. Poor signage and no staff attending rooms; on the good side touching seems allowed everywhere. Also, no floor map or signage... Thought they would learn to improve over the years....
Had a good experience, payment for locals is 1500tsh (0.65$) for foreigners it’s 6500tsh (2.82$) you can also hire a guide for 11,000tsh (4$) or less ,one setback is you can only pay via Card or mobile money like MPesa ,It’s a nice day place to learn and understand the History of Tanzania it’s people and the culture ,
I always try to visit Nationl museum when travelling as what it presents capture the counteys collective psyche. I went early in the morning at 9 am and only myself was there. I liked the quiet atmosphere. The first floor was dedicated to the first president and the countrys struggle during his period. The second floor is more about the history of the land, paintings, and i particularly enjoyed the rock art section in Africa. Worth visiting - the entrance fee is 12,000 (+500 for transacrion fee). All payment should be made on card as it has become a rule.
The best part is the Africa history. But nothing more. Also the photos of tanganiaz indepency was good. Actually there is not ancient history for this country so mostly you see the modern history hereThe collection of beetles and butterflies was good. Worth to see if you have enough time in dar e salam
Beautiful place with a lot to learn on the independence of Tanzania. However, they were not accepting cards at the time of our visit.
The Museum is found in a beautiful compound in Dar Es Salaam. I loved the story of Human Civilization, Rock Art in Africa, the Political transitions in TZ, and the memorial for the people killed during the terrorists bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Dar. The story of slavery and the slave trade were nice, but could have been more detailed and comprehensive. I was left wanting more than the stories we read in secondary school history books. I also wish I had learned more about Tanzanias anthropology : the demographic and ethnic groups that make up the Tanzanian identity .Overall though, it was very affordable to visit - about $5 to $10 (if you want to take photos), and we learned more about African culture in general.
This place plays a monumental role in breeding young artists and giving them a platform to showcase their talent thus earning a living. It also showcases a lot of Tanzanian historical artefact. Be sure to visit it next time you are in Dar es Salaam.
An amazing experience with so much history of Tanzania 🇹🇿.
Located at posta area🥰 its center city of dar es salaam. There is big and good hall for performance
Favorite part of Dar. Evolution of man exhibit is well done, informative and entertaining. Sections on Julius Nyerere and African art very cool as well. Seriously a cant miss during your visit
This place is very good to learn about our countrys history and culture
I visited it got a chance to learn alot about the history of Tanzania .I really appreciate it
Its always good to visit a countrys National Museum to get an idea of how they view themselves and want others to see them. The exhibits about human evolution and development on oldavai gorge is cool. A bit unsure about the auto displays. Would have liked to have more exhibits about the different tribal cultures that make up Tanzania, more detail about the slave trade and history and its impact on modern Tanzania. Etc.
It was good trip pupils they get good experience and they learn a lot about their country history and ancestors history and civilization.... Promise to come back again. 🙏🙏
Beautiful view !! A Place for Tanzanian culture, nature and history
When talking about science and knowledge visit this museum.
Good place to get a profound knowledge of Tanzanias (Tanganyika & Zanzibar) deep history. I think that this musuem needs more on display though. There was an entire building (the arts & culture wing I think) that was under renovation when I visited so that may explain it. The people of Tanzania (and their resources) for centuries were exploited by Europe and the Middle East... sounds familar?
We were charged as if we had a tour guide, and never got our recite for the payment. It was only until later when we read the reviews here we realized that he charged us double the price.Inside could be more informative, nothing spectacular. Only one small part of the museum, which was payed by Spanish government was good. Quite disappointing.
Great deal of history on 🇹🇿Tanzania, the culture, geography and the environment. At times the experience was heartbreaking to read about the horrible treatment of these beautiful souls during years of slavery.
A must place to visit in Dar es Salaam. Showcase the history of mankind and Tanganyika
Well organized exhibitions with Competent and helpful tour guides 👌🏿👌🏿
If you want to know the history of Tanzania, this is the best place for you
Its the best place for tourism specifically historical tourism about Tanzania and Africa in general
Very interesting, i really enjoyed the diverse exhitibitions
Very impressive. It documents the history of Tanzania in a succinct and interesting manner. I thoroughly enjoyed this visit. It was enhanced by the guided tour of a member of staff who provided interesting background information. Well worth visit.
Really good display of natural and human history in Tanzania. I wish they could bring more of the displays up-to-date.The oceanography section is in very bad shape.I guess the place would get more visitors if given a bit more attention to detail.
The place where the history of the country are preserved and accessible to everyone to get information.
It was fantastic. It was unforgettable memories for movie night cinema. The Late Mwl. Julias Nyerere said A country without culture is like a group of people without spirit.Lets be proud of our Tanzanian culture.
Not the best museum I have been to:) but still interesting to visit and experience.
It is a beautiful Museum, fair price for ticket (only electronic payment, credit card or by phone, no cash accepted) and the staff is friendly, not rich in contents but pleasant to visit. If you are in love with aquarium (fish tank) pleasant surprise ending the tour
Good starting point for learning the history of Tanzania and surrounding countries. The oral history that was given to me after visiting here was easier to put into perspective having been here first. That being said, the museum is a collection of things that should not be forgotten. The exhibitions and artifacts themselves are not high in value but the history behind them is invaluable. Please visit the souvenir store and at least say hello and talk for a minute while you are there. Also, the main photograph is the old museum, the original Tanzanian Parliament building (if I remember correctly). There is an entirely new 2 story museum that has been built around it with the old exhibitions as well as very modern air conditioned exhibits that will blow you away if you take the time to read and understand what is being said. This is a must for your first visit to Dar.
It is supposed to be a museum. It doesnt appear much like one though.Still, theres a collection of Nyereres cars, an old world war cannon and some stuff. I wouldnt recommend it to a local, but if youre a foreigner looking for a museum 🤷🏾♂️I think its one of two in the city so......
The best place to about the history of Tanzania
Very nice ongoing exhibition about the history of mankind. A lot of information so you better split your visit into two days. Also nice way of introducing the German and British colonial time. Its definitely worth the entrance of 6500 Tsh. We didnt take a guide but I would recommend it, if you dont want to read all the time
A place to see the history of this great nation.
Its a place where we can see and no more about our history, not only to us but to the foreign states or nation states.Including the history of the bombed Embassies of the U.S in Kenya and Tanzania.Welcome to the National Museum of Tanzania.🌍
We learned a lot about Tanzanias history
This place have a remarkable history of Tanzania and have a well trained informers to provide a tour with quite really information about the nation history and culture and it allow all age class to access with place for kids and available restaurants within
I got there early and I was advised that opening time was 930am. I waited. That could perhaps explain why there were only two of us for the duration I was there. Was impressed with stories of mans evolution, slave trade , the road to independence, pictures of presidents and freedom fighters, the vintage cars and other historical features on the grounds. It takes quite some time because of the narrative in each section. It is advisable to do the reading. For those that appreciate art theres a whole section of pieces to enjoy. I highly rated PR of the ladies at reception. The fees were really affordable thus my failure to comprehend the low traffic. I truly enjoyed taking a peek into the foundation of Tanzania as a nation.
I love the place it is well kept and well secured
Loved the part where you get to see cars used back in time with the first president of Tanzania and the last British governor with the Mandate on Tanganyika.Interesting bit is that most of them were taken to the museum straight out of state house.Ofcourse there are other historical things and readings.
Nice place for the national museum, you can learning alots when u reach there, you will never regret, I love that place.
A great history lesson in Downtown Dar es Salaam. While some of the exhibits could be improved, the cradle of life and modern art exhibits are wonderful. Its a great place to visit and get a glimpse of Tanzanian history, how societies lived before colonialism, slavery, independence, the contribution of Tanzania in the African liberation movement. I would have liked to see exhibits that showed more about the Tanzanian community and exhibits that had an in depth focus but the museum just scrapes the surface in my opinion. The exhibits tend to be the same everytime you visit too. It is worth it for a day visit though.
