So many great finds and such talent on display at a great value. Its a definite must go for crafts and gifts. The shopkeepers were all very friendly but also kind of pushy. I would have spent more time and more money if I were able to browse without being houded or followed around for a sale.

Mwenge Woodcarvers Market is for souvenir shopping and a place where you can witness woodcarvers sculpting behind some store. It can be an overwhelming experience, as all the shopkeepers are trying to attract your attention. It is essential to bargain a lot, as items may be worth a quarter of the price that you are quoted initially (especially if you are mzungu). Most stores sell the same souvenirs items, and paintings, so make sure you visit a few stores to get an idea of prices you are offered before making purchases. There is one store that we found was very different from the rest. The store is on the inner side of the courtyard with animal paintings on the outside and lots of masks and statues inside. The masks are formidable and the sculptures are vulgar but impressive from an arts perspective. The art is done by an older gentleman, who is the grandparent of the lady running the store.

Great experienceThe place is full of african traditional items including crafts, home made clothes, hand bags, slippers, women khanga - kitenge (loin clothe), bracelets etc. You have to bargain and negotiate to 40% or less. There are many choices dont hurry. Opens in the morning say 830am and closes around 630pm. They dont open at nite. Free parking.

Its fairly nice. When I was there on a weekend afternoon, I was too exhausted to buy anything, but a friend of mine got nie gifts from here. There are just a handful of stalls selling mostly small figurines of animals. It should be noted there are other places to get handcrafts in Dar: for example there are some stalls outside the village museum.

Not really worth the visit unless you want to buy they type of carvings that you can find in many places. The pricing is insane and I think you would have to be able to bargain ruthlessly to obtain a fair price. Almost every stall has the same things, except for one or two stallsThe artists have the skills but lack creativity and originality.

Probably goes without saying but beware the heavy sales pitch. The items here are all terrific and worth your investment, but they will give you a hard press to purchase something. It has always been recommended to me by more experienced visitors, but stay with a partner and dont be afraid to say no repeatedly and walk away. All that being said, the items available here are beautiful and if you find something you like you should negotiate for it. If youre traveling to a less touristy area of the country youll likely pay at least twice as much here.

The woodcarvers market is an awesome place to visit if you have an appreciation for hand carved wooden wonders. It amazes me that with all the inventory-what once was a bustling place packed with foreigners and locals alike busy picking out unique objects for their households-most of the shops here hardly get visitors. A lot of the items have unfortunately been left to accumulate dust and when I enquired with a couple of the shopkeepers as to the reason the response each time was that things are just not like how they were in the past. Some shops sell a couple of items a month if lucky, others a couple a year and others not at all. If you are looking for a bargain this is probably one of the best times to hunt.

The carvings are great, the artistic talent is overflowing here. Nice location, ample parking, except for the minor inconvenience of navigating with daladalas as they pass through. What is irritating though is the traders pressure for buyers, immediately when u step in, they are all over trying to pull u to their direction. It would be great if one was left to roam and decide, but I guess business is tough

My husband and I came as part of our Investour. It was okay. It’s a long line of shops with a lot of the carvers working behind the shops. The carvers sell their work to the shops who then in turn sell it to the customers. There are a lot of similar items, and it’s not always clear what is made there vs. produced elsewhere. Prices are expensive given the ambiguity. The family trees are likely the most unique pieces, but there’s plenty to look at.

The place designed for hand made statues and giftshop. The price is not fair especially if you are not foreigner or european tourist they call mzungu and your price is always higher than local guys. For instance local guy buys for 5$ you have to pay 10$. I suggest and recommend slipway. This place is too much locally and the prices are not fair. You have to negotiate/bargain too much. If the gift original price is 1$ they tell you 15$ and you imagine how far you are going to bargain.

The Mwenge Wood Carvers Market is in Mwenge area of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It is 8km northwest of Dar es Salaam City Centre. It is near the intersection of Bagamoyo Road and Sam Nujoma Road. Mwenge is known for the large Makonde community market where ebony sculptures, wood crafts  and other art items are sold. The market is a major tourist attraction of Dar es Salaam. Dresses, paintings, masks, and all other craft items special to Tanzania are made and sold here. Several shops have adjacent workshops where visitors can watch Makonde sculptors at work. Mwenge is one of the main daladala (share taxi) stations of Dar es Salaam. Daladalas ply from Mwenge to the Dar es Salaam central business district as well as all other destinations, throughout the day carrying tourists and locals. Very beautiful artwork at display and tourists throng into this market place to have a glimpse of the displayed items and for purchase. Visit this market and feel the beauty of Tanzanian craftsmanship. Good luck.
