Review №1

The Tanzanian leg of our East African trip was managed (though not directly booked) through Safari Care. We paid around $1000 per person for a 4 day, 3 night trip, spending 1 night on the Shira plateau. One of us got sick on the first day of our hike, forcing us to turn around and miss Kilimanjaro completely. :( However, that is not factored into this review. The good: Arranged for us to stay in a nice (by African standards) hotel - the Gold Crest. Our local handler, Kamal, spoke great English, met us promptly upon arrival, and was generally confidence-inducing. Our briefers English was slightly less good, and he was slightly less professional, but nonetheless, up to this point, things were looking pretty good. The mediocre: The guide, driver, and a single porter (we had been told we were paying for 3) arrived half an hour late in a thoroughly unimpressive minivan. The guides English was significantly worse than expected, to the point where we struggled to have a conversation about the Tanzanian flag, and largely gave up on establishing any kind of relationship with the guide within the first hour. The bad: No one even noticed that my wife had begun vomiting during the drive out to the mountain, much less that she had been feeling poorly for a while. Her sickness appeared to increase the amount of conversation in Kiswahili, none of which was ever translated for us. The chef, whom we had picked up halfway to the mountain, was speaking so animatedly from the back of the vehicle to the guide and driver (who were in the front) that I had to starting covering my ears to avoid ringing. This same chef later made some singularly unappetizing food while we parked in a strange location near a sawmill.Upon our unexpected return to Arusha because of illness, we were put up in a much less fancy place, which was both understandable (because of the unexpectedness) and frustrating (because it would have been nice to think that our huge outlay of money was going towards *something* even though we were having to miss the mountain itself). All in all, it felt like an awful lot of money for something we could have arranged on our own for easily less than half the price.
