Our family of 5 just returned from an incredible family trip to Tanzania. It was an unforgettable, once in a lifetime experience. Back to Africa Safaris did a fantastic job of organizing everything, especially considering that COVID caused cancelations and changes. Alex Mulemba, the owner, was really responsive and great to work with. They are a locally owned company, which was important to us.The first part of our trip was a 6 day private safari to all the major sites (Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorgoro, Serengenti). The vehicle was really comfortable and everyone could see easily. Our sons loved the pop up roof. Obviously, all of these place are incredibly beautiful but what made this extra special was how wonderful our guide was (ours was Gilead). Gilead was so experienced and knowledgeable and wonderful company too. We had some rain in the Serengeti which made for really difficult driving. Gilead had no problems at all. We saw other vehicles getting stuck. It is really important that you have an experienced guide and driver and this company will make sure of that! He went above and beyond to make sure we saw as much as possible and we saw sooo much! All of the big 5 were spotted, as well as so much more and so many birds too (Gilead knew every single animal and bird species that we saw). I would also highly recommend the biking/canoeing option in Lake Manyara. It was wonderful to experience some of the local culture and really broke up the driving. Also really enjoyed the bushmen visits (we visited the Datoga and the Hadzabe tribes). These are fascinating, authentic and once in a lifetime experiences that in my opinion topped the Masai visit. Our lodging was all excellent. We stayed mostly in Serena Lodges (were supposed to be in Sopa but they were closed). After our safari portion came (sadly) to an end, we went on to Zanzibar, which is a completely different side of Tanzania. Again, we were met at the airport by Abraham, another absolutely wonderful local guide. He had so many interesting things to tell us on our way to the resort. We stayed at Karafuu Beach Resort, which was really lovely. My only negative comment is that they did upcharge a lot on beverages (about 3x what other hotels charged), charged for internet if you wanted it in your room (so we just used the free wifi in the beautiful lobby). Otherwise, we thoroughly ourselves, as well as the nightly entertainment. We spent our final days in Stone Town at the Tembo Hotel (probably my favorite hotel of the trip). We did a spice tour and prison island with Abraham (both excellent). Again, I cannot say enough about the quality of the guides. We found out during the trip that we would need a covid test in order to fly home. We could not have handled this without Abraham. He picked us up and drove us to the testing center, helped us navigate payment, and then was able to take us to the local clinic instead of waiting in line for 3 hours. He then picked up our certificates and brought them to our hotel. Even though we would have preferred not to deal with this testing, Abraham was able to somehow make this fun and interesting, as he shared lots of interesting history and stories about Zanzibar on our drive. So, if youre planning to go to Tanzania, do not hesitate to use Back to Africa safaris. You will not be disappointed.
We have just finished a 4 day 3 night private safari with Back to Africa and it was AMAZING!! Alex was brilliant at giving us information and a custom itinerary when we were organising this back in February and he kept in touch with us all the way until September with quick responses. Prices were very reasonable also. Our guide Ibrahim was outstanding... where do I start?! He was incredibly knowledgable about all of the wildlife including birds, the landscape, the culture and the country. He was he perfect balance of friendly and professional. He speaks perfect English and is a good driver. We did the safari during the covid pandemic and so there were hardly any other tourists/4x4s around which gave us front row seats at kills etc. 100% recommend this company and guide.
Alex, Frank and their team were great! Had a lovely trek up Mount Meru, and felt well taken care of the entire way. Perfect communication from the beginning, they were able to handle additional requests with ease (needing hiking poles, dietary restrictions with one member of our party, etc). Couldnt recommend these guys enough.
